I turned a bunch of bowl blanks from hickory logs. I'll let these dry for a few more months. I don't know if that's necessary since the logs were already a couple years old. I'll post the finished projects when I get there. [August 2026]

I'm between projects now and looking for something to do. I took a pile of edge pieces of hickory logs that normal people would throw out and tried to see what I could get out of them. Basically I spent a day milling up scrap wood with no immediate plan to use it. After milling, the boards range in thickness from 1" to 1/2", random widths and lengths. There is a lot of worm damage and some spalting.

My son and I made a cutting board with an inlaid "annoying dog" image.

I was asked to make some more Penny Drop games. It is a simple dice/gambling game. It was a good way to use up some scrap wood. It's the first time I made segmented bowls with lids.

I turned some wooden bowls out of a log of hickory from my backyard. One bowl broke in half while I was turning it and I fixed it with a strip of leopard wood. They all have some worm damage to add some character.

My son and I made an table top easel box that will hold art supplies. The lid has a hickory veneer over a thin sheet of steal so that it is magnetic. The lid can be adjusted to different angles. The wood is from a tree I milled and dried myself.

I made a tea box with a compass rose inlay. It's made from mahogany with walnut accents.

A few weeks ago I posted that it is time to clean out the scrap again. From that pile of scrap wood I made a standard cutting board, a chaotic cutting board, 2 segmented vases, and a band saw box. The band saw box forced be to tune up my band saw, which was another perk. My son and I also made a bunch of pens (not shown) that I gave away as gifts this year.

It's time to clean out the scrap wood again. Let's see what I can make out of this.

My son and I have been making some wooden samari swords. I think they are turning out prettty good. We should be able to finish them up next weekend.

I helped my son make his first cutting board. It's an 8-bit picture of Link from the original Zelda game. I think the Cherry and Elm turned out too close in color, but it was a good first effort.

I bit on an Instagram Ad for a Shop Nation dust chute for my Bosch sliding miter saw. I also added a dust deputy in line to the shop vac. I can already tell that this set up is much better than the old set up.

My daughter asked me to make some boxes for her co-workers. They are for a fun little gambling game called Penny Drop. My son helped me and we cranked out 8 boxes in few hours.

I'm getting a jump on Xmas gifts this year. I turned a bunch of pens for all the people in my lab.

June 14, 2025. I finally finished sawing all my hickory logs down to boards. I referenced the date so I can look back on this in 2 years and start using the wood.

I've spent the last couple weekends converting logs into boards. The logs are about 40" long and from a couple hickory trees we had taken down last summer. I'm working with a chainsaw and a bandsaw. It's slow going and more work than I expected. I'm sawing them to about 6/4 and will let them air dry for a couple years before I try using them for something.

I finished the queen sized headboard I built for my mother-in-law. It's walnut and stained to match her dresser. The panels are walnut veneered birch plywood. I veneered them myself with a homemade vacuum press.
