TAYLOR SWIFT | The New York Times (4.28.2026)
we used to have the eras tour
i'm still mad showgirl day was so rancid like what the fuck was that
something something about the “honey I rose up from the dead I do it all the time” to “I’m immortal now baby dolls I couldn’t if I tried” pipeline
the great war is such a fucking song like holy shit. "my knuckles were bruised like violets. sucker punching walls, cursed you as I sweet-talked." already a banger after two lines. like those two lines alone make it an all-timer. and then they're not even the best ones in the song. "spineless in my tomb of silence. tore your banners down, took the battle underground." already that says a million things. "and maybe it was ego swinging. maybe it was her. flashes of the battle come back to me in a blur." that first verse paints a more vivid picture than most songs do in their entire run. and the first verse isn't even the best part!!!!
"all that bloodshed, crimson clover, uh-huh." that uh-huh is an elite vocal moment by the way. "sweet dream was over my hand was the one you reached for all throughout the great war". notice how there's basically zero pause between over and my? because she's emphasizing how quickly it was completely gone and something else replaced it??? "always remember uh-huh tears on the letter. I vowed not to cry anymore if we survived the great war." it's soooooo twisted toxic wholesome all at once like oh my god. as if one cause can dictate your tears for the rest of your life. the desperation for it not to go wrong, not to end! to survive the great war at the cost of relinquishing the right to any other sadness forever!!!!
"you drew up some good faith treaties. I drew curtains closed, drank my poison all alone." the double drew is so lethal I'm sorry that's one of my fav writing tricks and she uses it all over midnights. "you said I have to trust more freely. but diesel is desire, you were playing with fire." the way she says diesel and desire is like taking a straight shot of whiskey. "and maybe it's the past that's talking. screaming from the crypt. telling me to punish you for things you never did. so I justified it!!!!" I'm on my knees at this point in the song. and the chorus starts again, with a twist!! I'm such a slut for a twist on a chorus. "all that bloodshed, crimson clover, uh-huh. the bombs were closer. my hand was the one you reached for all throughout the great war." we don't even know what's causing the war - egos, her, the past - so it could be entirely on them but they're still holding hands through it all!! desperate to save it!! "always remember, uh-huh, the burning embers. I vowed not to fight anymore if we survived the great war." she's giving up more and more for this war!! she ignored the good faith treaties and instead is leaving all of herself, all of her emotions on the field in the hopes of salvaging this!
and then the bridge................... "it turned into something bigger. somewhere in the haze, got a sense I'd been betrayed. your finger on my hairpin triggers..... soldier down on that icy ground looked up at me with honour and truth. broken and blue. so I called off the troops. that was the night I nearly lost you. I really thought I'd lost you." like she's vowed to basically give up all strong emotions if they win but in the throes she's exploding with these emotions and letting them control to the point where she decides to give it all up before the victory to get to the victory. also her voice throughout that bridge is everything.
"we can plant a memory garden. say a solemn prayer, place a poppy in my hair. there's no morning glory, it was war, it wasn't fair. and we will never go back to that-." the way there's still an undercurrent of anxiety through this part is fascinating because it's like "...right? it's over right?" and you think probably but you're never sure despite all the vows. "all that bloodshed, crimson clover, uh-huh. the worst was over. my hand was the one you reached for all throughout the great war." notice how she said the worst was over but not that it was all over? all the things that led to the war? "always remember, uh-huh. we're burned for better. I vowed I would always be yours, 'cause we survived the great war." finally a much sweeter vow than any of the previous ones. and finally... "I will always be yours, 'cause we survived the great war." we're finally in the present and there's a certainty in that line that is finally firm. "I vowed I would always be yours..." and the certainty is immediately gone. almost like she needs a reminder of why they're still standing, why the damaged remains after the great war are something they're still clinging to.
TONE DEAF AND HOT! LET'S
listen. I don’t care if people hate the album right now. 90% of people online will change their mind in a few months and pretend they’ve liked it from the beginning just like the general public has done with the last 7 albums. and if that doesn’t happen then I will at least have a much easier time getting tickets to her next tour. either way I win.
this came to me in a vision. i won’t elaborate on my choices.
And I'm just getting colour back into my face...
