It was getting closer. Too close. Soon Mareloen will leave and she will be left to take care of the estate. Gone to Tevinter without her. Just as she wishedâŚÂ Â
But now things were different. There was no one keeping her here. There was Leon but wellâŚÂ
Her heart still aches thinking of such things. She was silly to think that it would lead anywhere. Even if he made her believe so she should have known better. And yetâŚÂ
It was far too easy to get caught up in the fantasy of it all. She used those words once with Mareloen and he didnât seem to favor them all too much. Her fantasy and his nightmare if she recalls correctly. Something about how Leon would have succumbed to mortality in half a century and the problems it would have caused. Genevive wonders⌠Sometimes it seems like Mareloen forgets that she too is mortal. That she too will fall ill to the fate of humanity. Half a century⌠To her it seems like a long while away but to Mareloen itâs not much more than a blink of an eye sheâd suppose. They are so differentâŚÂ One day she will be gone and he living as if she never had existed. Perhaps not at first but after a couple decades or centuries surely her memory must fade from his mind. And there's a pang in her chest at such thoughts. A sadness to it all. When will it end? All the hurtâŚÂ Genevieve remembers a time all she really felt was joy. A time she was able to find the positive of even the most negative but it seems as if the tide has turned and such things are becoming harder and harder. A certain despairâŚÂ A hopelessness to the future. Â
But alas⌠Best not dwell on such. She can still put on a smile and pretend everything is alright. For now that's all she can doâŚ
Like now! Grabbing the basket of goodies she puts on a smile and greets Mareloen as he enters the kitchen. She was going to find him but this works too! Â
âGoodmorning,â she greets all too cheery, the sound dancing off the walls to an almost eerie tune. âI made you some muffins. Theyâre fresh, straight from the oven.â Recently Genevieve has taken up baking as a way to pass time when she wasnât studying or training. It was always easier to go to the market and buy her morning treats but now the market has become a place she avoids, everything reminding her of him. âIâm hoping they turned out better than the last batch. I couldnât even get Hawke to swallow one and that man will eat anything. But Iâm fairly certain I used the sugar instead of salt this time around. Itâs not my fault they look deceptively similar. Quite suspicious if you ask me,â she jests, holding one out for him. âI used blueberries and lemon this time. They smell quite good, hopefully theyâll match in taste.â But her eyes shine, a sorrow laden deep within. âI know it probably wonât be as good as the ones Iâd bring from the market but hopefully they arenât too disappointing.â Looking up at him she waits for him to take a bite, a tad nervous for some reason. âI hope to perfect them before your journey. I wish to slip a few in your pack. Something to remember me by. There are only a few days left before you leaveâŚâ Â
Things were hectic to say the least. Tevinter was no small journey after all and they needed to make sure Mareloen left with everything he needed. If only he needed her as wellâŚÂ But alas. It was her choice. Her decision. And she doesn't have the heart to ask to come with. Not when they spent the past couple of weeks going over her tasks and duties here while he was away. There were too many responsibilities that needed to be taken care of and there was no one else to do them but her.Â

- TIME JUMP -
âAh! Not so tight Desdemona!â Genevieve gasps as the other woman, well, abomination, tightens the corset.  âHow I pity the prey of snakes, nothing could be worse than a fate such as this.â Though the desire does not heed her wishes and pulls harder, further securing the structure in place, resulting in yet another pained yelp.  âMaker help me, Desdemona if you make it any tighter I fear Iâll die before the ball. Iâm not turning blue yet am I? I can barely breathe. Or move.â Â
âIf you are I wouldnât know the makeup is doing a good job covering it up. The mask will help too. And donât blame me for your faults, if you didnât slouch so much I wouldnât have to wind you up so tightly,â she nonchalantly replies, pulling a little too harshly on the strings.  âThere.â Taking a step back the desire admires her handy work. She really went all out on this one. The beading, the lace, the color; it was perfect. âNow your hair.âÂ
---
Three more torturous hours pass before Desdemona deems her presentable. Three more hours until they head to the carriage and make their way to the event. It was very important things go well tonight. Mareloen made that certain. For what he still has yet to fully explain but she assumes it relates to Tevinter in one way or another. Or the forgotten ones. Or the ancient elves or something along those lines. She honestly canât keep up anymore. Itâs been hard on her since his departure. The woman was so used to having him by her side she forgot what it was like without him. Lonely. That was the best way to describe it. She hasnât even been able to see Paien or any of her other circle friends. All she had was Snickerdoodle and while great for company the not so little anymore nug doesnât provide the best conversation. And for the bird, well he looks upon her differently ever since that whole âcheatingâ fiasco. He may be stealthy about it but the change is still noticeable. Â
And as the carriage comes to a sudden halt and the sound of horns play a proud tune she knows sheâs reached her final destination. Her heart beats out of her chest, the nerves settling in all at once. The last time she went to any event close to this stature she was with him... Her Mareloen. No. Just Mareloen. He wasnât hers. But still... It didnât feel right. She didnât know how she was going to do this without him. Â
But alas, Genevieve canât fail him now, and so securely fastening her mask, one that covers little more than her eyes, she makes her exit from the carriage and into chaos she goes. Â

The muffins caught him by surprise.
Not againâŚ
But there really wasnât much he could do, was there?
Mareloen took a bite out of the suspiciously vibrant purple muffin shaped torture device and nodded, jesting and making noises to compliment Genevieve on the exquisite tasteâŚ
Why did this feel like more of a lie than anything else?
After juggling the ongoing experiment on her traitor friend, the prisoners ⌠and some other prisoners⌠and Leonâs soon-to-be tragic ending, an estate full of demons and their pet â Birdâ getting more and more nosy by the day, weâll⌠lying about a muffin shouldnât have been this hard.
Mareloen forced a miserable smile and swallowed, trying to ignore the overwhelming sweetness and crack of eggshells on his teeth. What was little suffering next to seeing Genevieve happy again? Or perhaps a little further from the verge of tears?
â Wonderful⌠thank youâŚâ he finally muttered, trying to slip the rest of the muffin into his pocket, - â Ah⌠I wanted to talk to you, but⌠Do we have tea? Or something to drink?â
Anything. Now. Please.
Suddenly he felt a pull on the sleeve - it was Granny Screech holding up the infamous tea. Mareloen hesitantly accepted the cup, but suddenly felt much less thirsty.
â I⌠wanted to talk to you aboutâŚevents. Apparently we have been invited to one, but it will be held after my departureâŚâ
âAh! Itâs good no? Iâll make sure to write down the recipe so I can make them any time you desire. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, you name it Iâm your girl,â and for the first time in a while the tips of her ears touch the sky. Sheâs glad he likes them. Itâs the least she can doâŚ
But he wishes to speak to her? About what she wondersâŚÂ
Genevieve accepts the cup from screech and unlike Mareloen takes a sip, quite surprised by the taste, finding it quite pleasant before the drink deceptively warps in her mouth, turning sour, sweet, and tart all at once before an encore of mouldy cheese follows, assaulting her poor taste buds. Alas, the drink leaves her mouth and ends up back into the cup, some of the tea not so gracefully dripping down her chin as her mouth turns a scowl. Well⌠That was something else entirely. But regardless she politely nods at screech assuring it that her palette was just not dignified enough to indulge in itâs creation, it was her fault and not the despairs. Â
âOh? Is that so?â An uneasy feeling arises, Genevieve unable to wash it away. She never went to an event alone before. Was this to be the first time? âI suppose Iâll have to make an appearance all by my lonesome without my handsome husband there by my side. Quite scandalous, but also bold.â She wishes thatâs not the case. A room full of shem nobles is the last place the woman would wish to blend into on her own. âI hope they have tiny cakes there. The ones with chocolate icing! Those are my most favored.â While she speaks with ease the conversation is almost forced on her end, Genevieve nervous of what such an event might entail. But itâs best she not get herself too worked up about it until she knows just what Mareloen is talking about. Â
Itâs going to be hard without him here. Yet she also finds it hard with him here for some reason. Things⌠they just aren't the same. Not like they used to be. Not like they were before LeonâŚÂ Â
Alone. Genevieve feels alone. Sure Mareloen is here but itâs different. Itâs not like it used to be. And then thereâs Hawke, but he has grown somewhat distant too, seeming to favor Mareloen over her. Well, in his eyes she is an ungrateful Orlesian noble who cheated on her loving, doting, protective husband who offers her the world. The best thing she has to comfort right now is screech, and it isn'tâ always the most comforting entity to be around. But it tries. It really does.Â

Itâs been about two months since Mareloen informed her about his plans. Two months of planning and endless preparations towards his trip to Tevinter. And as his apprentice? Well she feels a tad guilty. Okay more than a tad. A lot. Sheâs spent more time away with Leon than here with him. But alas, they agreed she shall stay here in Orlais to reside over the estate and continue making a name for themselves. But speaking of Leon... He said he needed to see her tonight. That it was urgent. Genevieve couldnât help the butterflies fluttering in the pit of her stomach. Not out of nervousness per se but out of excitement perhaps? Today does mark six months since they started seeing each other after all. Maybe he was planning something special?
She made him a little pendant to mark the occasion. Itâs not much, just a little brooch of sorts, but she did spend quite a bit of time making it just right. Anyways, she best be on her way if she wants to make it to the city on time.
â
She returns to the estate at the strangest hour. Genevieve wasnât expected to return until the following afternoon and yet here she is, quietly entering through the garden door two past midnight, hoping not to alert anyone or anything that resides inside, wanting nothing more than to crawl under her covers for an eternity. But alas, the poor elf just couldnât have it her way, bumping into something hard as she rounds the corner. Or well,- someone.
âGenevieve?â Hawke questions as she rams into his shoulder, catching her by the waist before she tumbles to the ground from the impact.
âAh,- apologies. I didnât mean to tackle you I swear. I wouldnât be able to even if I tried.â The woman tries to sound chipper but she fails miserably, her voice cracking several times, eyes refusing to meet his as her head is cast downwards, ears drooping low towards the floor.
â... uhm... are you alright?â Hawke has never been good in these sort of situations, his words coming out in an awkward sort of way. âDo you... uhm... do you want to talk about it,â he questions, patting her on the back like you would a dog. Thatâs what people say to distraught women right? Right???
âNo Iâm fine I...â but like a mishandled and mistreated porcine doll she shatters, falling to her knees as the tears break free. Burying her head in her hands the womanâs frail frame shakes as she struggles to gain control of her breathing. She was so stupid to believe him. So stupid to think things would work out. Mareloen was right. Mareloen is always right. She should of listened. But her heart... it hurts regardless. If only she wasnât born with pointed ears... if only...
She doesnât understand. She canât help being born an elf. He didnât seem to have a problem with it before. If only...
If only...
And he wasnât even nice about it. She never seen him this way before. He was cruel and cold, spitting words at her like venom. As if she wasnât worth being with someone like him.
Maybe she wasnât...
Maybe...
Her mind. It hurts. Her heart. It aches. Her bones. Theyâre weak. She canât... she...
All the while Hawke stands there unsure of what to do. Perhaps he should get Desdemona? Or maybe Mareloen? Snickerdoodle perhaps? She does love that little rat thing. Somehow.
His warmth is taken away and replaced with a rather large shawl; while it does its job in keeping her warm it just isnât the same. And as she sits in the chair curled up in a ball the woman canât help but wonder why her. What did she do to deserve this? The woman always tries to do right by others and make good choices. Yet here she was...
Silent tears roll down her cheeks as she mourns what never will be. She was caught up in the fantasy of it all. The possibility of a future. The possibility of having a husband and starting a family. Of having someone to love her forever and be there through thick and thin. And he told her thatâs what heâd be. Claimed she was his world and he would do anything for her. And yet here she is.
He lied to her. Claimed her heart as his own only to shatter it. Laughed at her for her tears when he degraded her and her kind. Called her a fool for believing theyâd ever actually be anything. Dumb for thinking he meant it when he would say he loved her. When he would talk of his future. Their future. All she was was a plaything. Entertainment until something better came along. And she bought into it. Believed she could mean something like that to someone. A fool. Thatâs what she is. She should have learned her lesson the first time with her mother.
But thatâs not fair... She knows it isnât. And Mareloen does too, her heart aching when he calls her out on it. Maybe she is a terrible person after all.
Doubt. Just moments ago she was questioning their relationship and worrying if he even cares at all. Itâs not fair. Deep down she knows she means more to him than just another apprentice. That he cares for her far more deeply than that. Perhaps even loves her. Like one would a sibling of course, or something along those lines. Nothing more... it was never anything more than that. Before Leon there was a brief moment that she thought maybe he...
But no. She quickly realized that was ridiculous. After walking in on him sharing his bed with others and the fact he views her as a child,- just no. She was reaching for something that would never be and so she did the smart thing and moved on. Found someone who wanted to offer her something more. Only it was all a lie. She wasnât enough...
But even so she still has Mareloen. Heâs always looked out for her and her best interest. Has always cared for her wellbeing and happiness. Has only ever wanted whatâs best for her. And Genevieve feels sick that she would ever doubt him. Heâs proven himself time and time again. Sheâs a terrible friend.
âIâm sorry,â she repeats again. âI,-â she has to pause before continuing. âMareloen I hurt. I... it hurts so much. Iâm sorry. You,- you were right I...â Closing her eyes the woman takes a deep breathe. Why does she miss his touch so much? Ever since he placed her into this chair sheâs wanted nothing more than to cuddle against his side like they used to. Though they havenât been that close in a long while... âIâm sorry I havenât been a good friend to you. I got caught up in a fantasy. I should have known better. It was too good to be true. I... I should have... I should have known.â And the tears come. Again. My was this exhausting.

Somehow.
And the estate shot up in flames and Hawke couldnât walk away! Not literally of course... but this was a disaster the man just couldnât tear his eyes from.
Lath? Isnât that an elvhen word. His dalish friend Merrill would use it occasionally. But yes! He does recall the lady of the house was one fourth elf. Or was it one eighth? Oh whoâs actually keeping track. But still... something seems off...
And the longer he watches the more things escalate and the more intense things become! Is he bad for wanting something to snack on during this entire display? Something salty... popcorn perhaps? Yes! Popcorn would be perfect!
Aha... So she was cheating after all... Or thatâs what it sounds like at least. Hawke should be surprised but what would be Orlais without a little bit of scandal. And it seems as if Mareloen fully knew as well... Yeesh. He kind of feels bad for the man. For how well he treats her and still does in this moment speaks volumes. Now thatâs loyalty and devotion. Too bad he didnât receive the same back... Ugh women. This is why he prefers to share his bed with men. Well, a man now that heâs off the market. Fenris... But with that last thought Hawke finally slips away into the garden leaving the rather, well, dysfunctional couple alone.
-
Something in the atmosphere, it changed. The air, itâs different. Thinner almost. The thought plagues the back of her mind but it gets overshadowed with the crushing weight in her chest pulling her down. Only... how does Mareloen almost seem to know whatâs going on?
Maker...
Was Desdemona watching her this entire time? It wouldnât be the first time Genevieve isnât that oblivious. So she saw everything... Heard everything... and no doubt that was relayed back to Mareloen. Only... Something seems off with that theory. The air... it feels so familiar. Not like a friend but a distant cousin twice removed.
But alas, itâs not something sheâs able to dwell on. Not now. Not that she really wants to. Perhaps itâs better this way. At least now she doesnât really have to explain anything. Not now at least. Sheâd be shocked if he didnât ask her some questions at least. But for now it would be okay. Itâs not the first time her heart felt this way and probably wonât be the last. She survived then and sheâll survive now. All because Mareloen was always there to pick her up. Just as he is now...
And thereâs just something about his touch that soothes her. Maker itâs been far too long. She feels safe, protected, as if now, in this moment, nothing can harm her. The hurts still there but itâs not as prominent. She doesnât even fight him at the mention of âlittle toy.â She doesnât have the energy to.
Instead the woman gives into his embrace, her head resting against his shoulder before whispering an almost inaudible, âsorry.â

Itâs rare to see this side of Desdemona. Gentle... kind... caring... Almost motherly in a way. Something Genevieve has been void of her entire life. And so she allows herself to be whisked away by Desdemona and nods her head in agreement. Yes. Just natural womanly functions going on here and nothing more. But alas... The woman just canât ever have it her way can she and before any actual whisking can happen he shows up.
Mareloen...
For a second she just looks at him, eyes all puffy and glazed over, nose red and raw, tears staining her porcelain cheeks. She didnât want him to see her like this. He warned her and she didnât listen. But even so she doesnât hate Leon. She canât bring herself to. Genevieve in essence isnât spiteful nor cruel, her heart too accepting and forgiving. But it only makes the pain that much worse...
And now he was going to leave her too. Not in the same way but it still hurt. It was her choice however. She cast him away for someone else. How could she do that? Mareloen, the man who had stuck by her since day one, the man who has proved his loyalty and care for her countless of times, she cast him away for love. Only she doesnât know what love is... Not anymore. And if what she had with Leon was it? Well she doesnât want it.
Perhaps she does deserve this. Genevieve canât help but feel as if this is the price to pay for betraying her friend. If she asked Mareloen to follow her to Tevinter heâd come with her in a heartbeat wouldnât he? Not only that but sheâs his apprentice. Itâs her duty to follow his instruction.
Wait...
Perhaps thatâs all she is to him. Just another student to teach until she ultimately dies, only to be forgotten about after a century or two.
But no. Thatâs not fair. Mareloen is not like that. She means more to him than that. He has too. She thinks more of him than just a mere teacher after all.
But then again she thought more of Leon than he did of her for all this time and look where that lead. Perhaps she doesnât mean as much to Mareloen as she thinks she does. Perhaps she needs to get a grip on reality and learn her place in others lives.
No. He cares about her. He has too right? Just looking at his face she sees concern. But on the other hand she would look at Leonâs and see love. Is she truly just delusional? Itâs all too much to take. Too much to process. And not before long the woman once again collapses to her knees, her breathing coming out erratic and in deep gasps. And then the tears follow suit. Why her... Maker life was so much easier in the circle.

A screeching sound echoed through the halls, sending an almost painful chill down Hawkeâs spine - it sounded too much like despair demons. But no... No! There couldnât have been! Not here. His mind was playing tricks on him again. It was probably just some old squeaky door. They were still renovating... right? That was why the lady of the house wasnât joining Mareloen on his upcoming trip... Right?
RIGHT?
Thatâs what he wanted... no, needed to believe. This was the real world and there were no demons about. Sometimes he thought he saw something, but that was just his mind playing tricks on him - thatâs what Mareloen said anyway. It was a truth both disturbing and comforting, so Hawke decided to believe him. Though had anyone asked him what he though of the spouses deciding to part for a while, he couldâve sworn something had changed between them. If he was to guess, he wouldâve put his money on Genevieve cheating behind Mareloenâs back and the man actually knowing... well, maybe not knowing, but guessing at least? Or maybe the other way around? He tried to hold up appearances, but there seemed to be a bit of a chill between them lately.
â What in the void is....â - a hastily clicking of heels was next to echo as Desdemona rushed towards them, - â What happened? Is she alright?â
Heâd have their heads if she wasnât.
She didnât move. Not when Desdemona came. Not when âscreechâ made himself known to the entire estate. No. She was too far lost in her own world to process everything happening around her. Thank goodness for her cloak, the hood raised, shielding her face from prying eyes, for her glamor has fallen off quite a bit ago, Genevieve far too distraught and fatigued to withhold any magic. She was depleted, both physically and mentally.
âAh Desdemona! Perfect timing. Perhaps youâre womanly presence will be better suited for this kind of situation...â Hawke steps back rubbing his back awkwardly not quite knowing what to do. âI uh, Iâm not quite sure. I couldnât sleep and thought why not take a stroll in the garden. Thatâs what people do to clear their minds right? But I happened to run into Genevieve,- or well she ran into me and well... this happened. I thought she wasnât suppose to be home until tomorrow? Didnât she have business in the city?â
As they are talking Genevieve manages to calm herself down. This is exactly what she didnât want to happen. This is exactly what she wanted to avoid. Now sheâs causing an unnecessary scene. This is her own doing. She should have been spending her time on her studies instead of chasing a man. But itâs too late to go back and change things now. Itâs done. What happened happened and sheâs just going to have to live with it.
Standing up from the ground Genevieve is able to compose herself. Not really but just enough to get up and acknowledge her two guests. âApologies. I didnât mean to cause a scene. I have always been into theatre, sometimes I find myself getting a bit too dramatic. Please, if youâd excuse me.â Thank goodness Mareloen isnât here... she doesnât think she could face him right now. But alas, Genevieve just canât keep up her act, eyes fluttering close as more tears roll down her face. Maker is she a mess.
