You say hi, I say bye
Shimmering black islands, covered mountains, glowing horizons - disturbing longings are what Orsi Horváth creates with her latest works. Taken alone and in relation to each other, the paintings have a narrative feature; they seem to belong to a world that is different, future or parallel to the present. They are both Utopian and Dystopian, for greeting something new means saying goodbye, with pain and fear standing beside joy. In this world, she mixes figuration and abstraction, certainty and uncertainty: Is she beautiful? Is she good? Better than the ones we know? It is difficult to determine, because in these views of the new, the present is not brushed off (dismissed, excluded) but painterly (aesthetically) circulated (scattered, dispersed). Orsi Horváth reflects surface structures, folds them, transforms the familiar into the unknown and thus provides images of the idea of what is not yet. Her colour scheme makes it crystal clear that a return to the supposedly innocent nature is not imagined here. Certainly, Horváth's out-of-the-way landscapes do not show human figures; But, they do not choose the emergency exit via nihilism and post-humanity. Because everywhere in them traces of the human are present: as objects and even more in the language of form. The artist writes in an email that between hi and bye, ‘the mountain, the silk and the plastic wrap formally rhyme’. But something is missing… The idea of what is not yet there is the knowledge that something is missing. It contains a negativity. The attempt to start a new life, to affirm positively something completely unseen - and untouched nature is one of them - tends towards ideology. If the future is to be presented, the suffering of the present must be included as the motivation of this idea. The better future itself remains the un-word, the un-place. Orsi Horváth's pictures do not show a concrete future, rather they visualize the certainty that something should be different. From the negativity, they feed the hope that it can be different, better. Thus, they are as dark as they are fascinating, as abysmal as they are confident. Orsi Horváth’s series was created in Leipzig, starting with Holiday and M. Sinai; only “The Atom” was painted in Budapest. After six years in Leipzig, she is now moving back to Hungary.
