THE HANDMAID'S TALE 2.08 "Women's Work"
I know I cannot wrap my arms around a memory but I still like to try
@caterva liked this post!
A new posting, a new household. This wasn’t looking good for her, this was her second posting. How many more before she’s sent to the Colonies? It was something to think about, to worry about as the days passed. She shakes the thoughts from her head as the new Commander enters the room. Her gaze is downcast, staring at the floor and making herself small. ❛ Blessed be the fruit. ❜ The appropriate greeting. ❛ Thank you for welcoming me into your blessed home. May God make me truly worthy. ❜
It's been a while , days , weeks . No one deserved to be 'locked up' for that long . For Orel the handmaid's job made sense ...AND it didn't . He didn't understand all of it , not through a lack of trying . 𝐇𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐝 , 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 , 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐫 . 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 .
So he decided enough was enough and checked on the handmaid . Peeling open the door , his head stooped a little lower than usual , hoping the door didn't creak too much behind him . He waves , friendly , a smile spreading across his face as he shuffles in despite her words .
❝ Oh I know but I figured you'd be lonely and I didn't really understand why you got into so much trouble anyway and was hoping maybe you can explain it to me ? - So I don't upset - ❞ He hesitates . ❝ Mother and ...Father . ❞ He knew his biological origins that's not what most boys under the word of the Gilead his age knew . ❝ too ! I wouldn't want to disappoint them and be sent to my room for two weeks ... and if they did send me to my room for that long I'd hope you'd come talk to me too so I didn't get bored or miserable and as Jesus says ' Do unto others ' ! .❞
He was a sweet kid, she can see why the Waterfords had picked him. But being sweet in this world was a sign of weakness. The kind could be taken advantage of, exploited and used if they weren’t careful. It was no behavior a future Commander should have, not by Gilead standards. Part of June hopes he doesn’t lose it through all the schooling, that he remains sweet as he grows up in this world. Maybe a future handmaid wouldn’t be in for as much suffering if he did. ❛ That’s very kind of you. ❜ She tries to offer a meek smile, inviting enough to continue talking to her. She's desperate for an interaction of any kind, even explaining why she was in trouble to a child.
❛ I'm afraid I wasn't fruitful this month. ❜ A pause, ❛ May God bless me to bring forth His miracle. ❜ Jesus fuck, even the words tasted rotten in her mouth. ❛ Your parents won't punish you like this, I'm sure. They love you, right? Maybe a couple of hours in your room at most. ❜ At least she hoped they wouldn't treat him this way. Gilead was supposed to be all about children, right? They wouldn't punish one as severely as a handmaid. She's listening, nodding her head in response. "As Jesus says "do unto others!" Pious little shit. ❛ Yes, praise be. ❜

THE PERFECT GIFT. A GIRL TRAPPED IN A BOX. SHE ONLY DANCES WHEN SOMEONE ELSE OPENS THE LID, WHEN SOMEONE ELSE WINDS HER UP. IF THIS IS A STORY I’M TELLING, I MUST BE TELLING IT TO SOMEONE. THERE’S ALWAYS SOMEONE, EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO ONE. I WILL NOT BE THAT GIRL IN THE BOX. / ind. june osborne/offred of “the hanadmaid’s tale” by anna-belle.
@moralpuppet
Two weeks. She's been banished to "her" room for two weeks. Fourteen days, and more hours than June can truly end up tracking in her head. It was hard without a clock around to count the seconds as they passed. The door was unlocked, it didn’t even close all the way. This serves as a constant reminder of who is in control. She resorted to exploring the room, counting the stitching in the bedspread and feeling the wooden paneling of the walls with her fingers. She’s learned the driver’s routine by watching from the window, watching him work on the Commander's car and drive him around. She's come watching other handmaids pass by in their pairs.
Bundles of white and red cloth, some swollen and blessed by God. They carry his divine light within them, something she had failed to do for another month. That's how she ended up here in the first place. She was supposed to be up here praying the Lord made her worthy to bring forth his miracle by the time the next Ceremony rolled around. But, fuck that. May the Lord truly bless her and get her out of the hell on Earth that was the Republic of Gilead. June is startled by the sound of the wooden floor creaking, by someone approaching "her" room. It's far too early for Rita to be dropping off another meal outside her door. No, this had to be someone else. She scrambled away from the window and settles upon the end of the bed. Hands resting within her lap and head down, her gaze remains downcast.
Truthfully, she expecting a pair of blue heels or black dress shoes to enter through the doorway, the Commander or Mrs. Waterford coming to speak of her punishment. But that's not what she's met with, rather it's smaller shoes and a blue-gray set of slacks. Her head lifts to meet the visitor's face. She knows him, although vaguely. He was their son, right? Orel, she recalls. What was he doing here?
❛ You aren’t supposed to be in here. Mrs. Water-... Your mother… she wouldn’t like it. ❜ And yet, she isn’t telling him to leave. Seems the handmaid is desperate for any sort of interaction after all this time.

The handmaid watches out the window as the Aunt leaves, a scowl ever present. June hated these check-ins, she hated the way Aunt Lydia tried to make small talk and all the questions that came with them. She hated having to put on her best performance, pretending she was someone she was not. With a roll of her eyes, the woman in red steps away from the window and settles into a chair. Her hand quickly finds her protruding midriff, feeling the baby kick. She’s all too aware of the Commander’s presence within the room and the silence that lingers between them.
This is the way it’s supposed to be, they aren’t meant to interact if they can help it. Still, things were all but typical in this household, weren’t they? And so, June breaks the silence.
❛ Aunt Lydia thinks it’s a boy, a "future Commander" she says. ❜
