Social design

Social design is design that is mindful of the designer’s role and responsibility in society; and the use of the design process to bring about social change.

Within the design world social design is sometimes defined as a design process that contributes to improving human well-being and livelihood. 

The agenda of social design is inspired by among others’ Victor Papanek’s idea that designers and creative professionals have a responsibility and are able to cause real change in the world through good design.

Papanek writes about responsible design. Designers can contribute to designing more ecological products by carefully selecting the materials they use.

Papanek also remarks on designing for people’s needs rather than their wants.

Responsible design includes many directions and one of these is design for the Third World.

Ekaterina Smirnova was born in 1981 in Novosibirsk, Russia. She started her art education in a Russian art school in Siberia in 1991. Shortly after moving to New York, USA in 2006 she became a member of the Art Students League of NY, where she has been developing her style ever since.

In the past 5 years, Ekaterina has received numerous awards in juried shows by the The Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition, and other art organizations.

Ekaterina Smirnova’s paintings are best described with a single word: atmospheric. The artist has a unique approach to the traditional medium of watercolor, using multi-glazing and repeatedly spattering the paper with paint to create the desired effect. Her stunning technique captures the depths of her surroundings, fading the distant objects, sharpening those in the foreground and portraying the weight of water in the air   via
