bachira had never been particularly normal about nicknames.
he'd had plenty over the years – some given by teammates, some given by coaches, and at least five that he insisted were “artistically significant” despite everyone else finding them straight up ridiculous. but there was one nickname that made him pause every single time.
you'd said it casually one afternoon, calling after him as he wandered away from you into the grass field, and bachira had turned around so fast you'd nearly laughed.
his eyes lit up. “again.”
“that's my government name now. honeybee.”
ever since, the nickname had become his favorite thing in the world. he'd practically trained himself to perk up whenever you said it, a grin immediately spreading across his face as he came bouncing over to you.
one evening, he dropped beside you on the couch, resting his head against your shoulder.
“honeybee's tired,” he announced.
you laughed softly. “oh, honeybee's tired?”
“mhm.” he closed his eyes, looking entirely pleased with himself. “honeybee needs affection.”
you reached over and gently ran your fingers through his hair and bachira's smile softened into something quieter.
after a moment, he murmured, “i really like when you call me that.”
“because your pupils dilate every time.”
his eyes opened. “you caught me.”
with a laugh, he buried his face against your shoulder, trying (and failing) to hide his grin.
his arms tightened around you.
“yeah,” he mumbled happily. “that's my favorite.”
