I was 1 of 4 artists who entered and won the Chorus Competition where we got the opportunity to paint chosen Chorus Cabinets out in the community. This cabinet is located in Flatbush, Chapel rd. Down below is a brief description on the ideas and story behind my Design. Thanks you very much to Chorus and Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust for the chance to share my talent with the wider communities. Hope you guys enjoy!
My given design represents the people of the Flatbush community. It specifically acknowledges the Fo Guang Shan Temple which is located in the area.
The design features a bright colored Dragon to symbolize the Chinese culture because not only is it appealing to the persons eye but it also signifies power, strength and good luck within the Chinese culture. The Dragon is influenced with a water colored mellow/monochrome background like of those found in original Chinese story telling traditional art. The backgrounds consist of Maori koru patterns which represent the waves of our shores/tangaroa with subtle patterns that depict the currents. Also our blue skies/rangi and long white clouds. Having the Maori background touch to this design would also consider our Dragon being a Taniwha. In saying this the design represents the gathering and bringing of both Chinese and Maori people and cultures together as one.
