A manatee that swears at random times
thinking about when I TAed for the lichen class at our university and sometimes we’d find two really common lichen species (from the same genus) oozing together so they fused into one lichen with one half being green and the other half being blue or brown or something because they are Soups Of Creatures On A Branch In A Parking Lot and have no regard for what we think a correct organism should act like. may all our boxes be broken and all our rules be challenged etc etc I think
This also makes me think of the local used book store which had all the werewolf books categorized under “lichen fiction.”
Capitalism is broken and incapable of fixing itself. The only solution is labor solidarity.
you've gotta have friends who are older than you, not because you're a dumb kid, but because you'll be terrified of growing up otherwise
being the oldest person you allow yourself to know will eat holes in your brain and you'll start saying weird stuff
So, here's the thing. Being an older Tumblr, I'm gonna spout some free advice.
Have friends who are different from you. Period. Full stop. Older, younger, same age but from a different socio-economic position, different languages, different nationalities. The more people you know, the broader your base of information to draw from.
I have learned SO MUCH about life from my younger friends because there are things y'all have done that weren't around when I was younger. I didn't have access to AP classes in high school, for example.
Yes, there are plenty of things to learn from older friends but there are just as many things to learn from someone younger. Even just learning about stuff from a different perspective, like the notes @lucifers-trash-stash and I have compared between New York and Virginia. I wouldn't know that without talking to her and her sibling.
So meet everyone. Learn from everyone. Always leave yourself open for new experiences. The more you learn, the less terrifying the world is. You might realize how little you know and that is pretty scary, but you'll also have some real kick-ass friends to help you figure it out.
ethereal things to stay alive for
flowers blooming
hugging someone after a long time
wandering in bookstores
late night talks
listening to vinyl records
walking through forests
the smell of rain
dancing late at night
fairy lights
seeing jellyfish
listening to nature in the morning
flower meadows
The second one triggered a memory for me.
I’m an only child. I have one cousin who is nine months older than I am. We were close as children and fell out of touch in stages as people are wont to do.
A few years after I moved to Virginia and married, my partner and I came home for Christmas and I got to see this cousin who was like a brother to me. His face lit up and I know mine did, too. He hugged me and I hugged him and for that first couple seconds, absolutely nothing else mattered except that I was with my family. I was home.
Life happens and things change. I went several years without seeing him again. Until this June when I saw him after he’d gotten his freedom again. I drove my car to his parents’ house and saw him coming out of the garage to meet me and I cried so hard as he hugged me again and I hugged him. Again, I was home. And so was he.
These are moments to be alive for. They are shining stars in the sadness or mundanity of life. Find your moments. Hang on to them.
Keep living.
Your daily dose of cat memes
One of my absolutely favorite scenes from "Ash vs Evil Dead" involves Ash going "I'm from right here!" and holding up his hand to point to somewhere in the middle of his palm. I really need to find a way to gif it (or get someone to gif if for me) because it speaks to the Michigan experience more than I care to admit.
That said, I'm from the Upper Peninsula. The TRUE North. When Detroit folks said "Northern Michigan," they're talking about Traverse City. I went to school in Marquette, on the shores of the greatest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior.
Blacked out for 3 minutes woke up to find I had drawn this have a good day
