POST 5: Project - youtube, apps and Netflix, the encouragement of extended or binge usage in everyday life.
This project will focus on the causes and effects that sites like Netflix and youtube as well as apps, that are created to be addicting, have on the world. Such as normalizing the word binge. The automatic play next video or episode button revolutionized this system. Causing procrastination to increase as a result of the increased distraction. Causing increased sleep deprivation as a result of the procrastination. Students complete work later or don't do it all. The switch from a working ethic to an entertainment ethic has changed our younger generation.
We all fall into the trap of repetitive long-term entertainment (such as binge-watching). But how do we fix this? Apps have been created to put limits on phone or internet use. You can limit time on youtube and other platforms. There are also apps that tell you the number of times you pick up your phone and how long you spend on certain apps. But that requires a conscious choice or decision from the user. Someone would have to make the decision to want to limit themselves in their activities on the internet.
Through studies and analysis, I will try to find practical and beneficial ways to improve the binge-watching epidemic and I will express the concerning physical and emotional issues that can result from binge-watching.

“And these physical affects are becoming increasingly apparent. Not only does it eventually lead to immobility as you age, but with the risk of creating inflammation in the body, you are susceptible to a host of diseases including kidney disease, diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer’s, and even depression.”
