Do not say Aphrodite isn't with you. Tell me, little Dove, who puts you to motion? Who is the one who closes your eyes when you blink? Who is the one who moves your hand and foot? Who is the one who beats your hearts? Who is the one who moves your thoughts? Who is the one who moves the sun up the sky and down into the void? Who is the one who puts everything to motion? Who is the animator of all things, if not the Great Goddess, Our Mother, The Queen of Heaven and Lady of Doves? Who, if not Aphrodite?
Aphrodite, born of foam, generator, who loves smiles and nuptial beds, uranian, navy, which rejoices you in the night,
O you who shine, pearl on the sea and calm the ardor of the wild beasts,
O Kypris, very beautiful, with the golden belt, hear our songs! the heart lost in the darkness sometimes hatred consumes us and far from the dances that you love, let's ignore the radiance of your grace
This is why I implore you, o sublime queen: be favorable to these words.
Animate in us the pure waves of your caress, and may the temples rise for you, may the rose petals dance on your blue waves.
- A spontaneous prayer by me. Feel free to use! 17.3.23
Words cannot describe how much love I feel for Aphrodite, she overwhelms me completely. She has graced me with a love I thought I’d never have, and the eyes to see how beautiful I am. Golden and smile loving she puts me at ease and brings me a warmth so bright it alights my soul and leads me.
Sappho Praying to Aphrodite by Margaritis Georgios, before 1843
random reminder of Aphrodite Φιλομμειδης (Philommides), which means "laughter-loving" because she is just wonderful, right?
Everytime I laugh, laugh at the world, laugh for no reason, laugh just to laugh, I feel her, I hear her, and I love her and thank her because without her I would never understand the feeling of laughter like I do now.
Remember when you are viewing my blog that I am queer and transgender. This should influence how you view me and all my posts. Amen.
The Birth of Venus by Robert Fowler (19th Century)
[grabs your shirt] listen. listen to me. the practical is holy. the everyday is sacred. the simple act of surviving is divine. do you get it? sanctity begins at home, in the hands that build and the lives we live and the deaths we die and the worms that eat our bodies. if making something by hand is not worthy of veneration then nothing is.
Sometimes when you ask the gods for help with your problem, all they do is lessen the heaviness in your heart. And sometimes that is enough
The whims of Aphrodite
There is a Goddess Whose name is Aphrodite Full of gold and myrrh Always with a resplendent smile Wise on the ways of love Bringing both ache and mirth
Reclining on the beaches Of Kypros rich in violets The waves trying to reach Her love-filled warm skin With laughter on the lips The Goddess weaves Desire Iridescent God, armed with arrows Following her designs Who help mortals survive Giving both meaning and ruin Nurturing life unending Through her sweet whims
Sometimes when you ask the gods for help with your problem, all they do is lessen the heaviness in your heart. And sometimes that is enough
Bedridden devotion to Hestia
A lot of you may know me and my bedridden posts from my main blog, @heatherwitch. For those of you who don’t: I’m both mentally and chronically ill and do a majority of my worship to Hestia from my bed!
Burn a candle on your nightstand, or use an electronic one!
Open your curtains and let the sunlight warm the room.
Make a potful of tea and keep it in a large thermos.
Watch movies that make you feel nostalgic and cozy.
Make a spray that smells yummy and use it when things feel a bit stale.
Set aside time to read a good book.
Knit or crochet. Craft something with your hands.
Say goodnight and good morning to her.
Get an electric blanket and feel the warmth connect you to her.
Cuddle with pets if you have them (or a stuffed animal).
Make a blog/journal filled with cozy, homely things.
Keep a few locally baked goodies nearby for when you need them.
String up fairy lights and use them as your only light source.
Whisper prayers and devotional pieces before you go to sleep.
Use a Himalayan salt lamp to connect to feeling of a fire.
Invest in little things (pillowcases, photos, curtains, etc.) that make your room feel welcoming and peaceful.
Make a little bottle filled with herbs, crystals, and other things that remind you of her, and keep it near - like a portable altar!
Listen to music that makes your soul happy and your heart content.
Take care of yourself. Brush your hair, use a wet cloth on your face. Be gentle and kind to yourself.
My other post on devotional acts for Hestia can be found [here], and my posts on bedridden witchcraft [here].
here’s a cool idea for the new year: hedonism is healthy.
pleasure is good for you. fun is good for you. humans aren’t supposed to spend their lives in constant struggle. we have souls, for fuck’s sake, we know we’re going to die! we shouldn’t be putting pleasure on hold until we’ve ‘earned’ it. we should enjoy ourselves as much as possible and as often as possible. how can we save anyone by entrenching ourselves in suffering? how can we hope to be strong and kind as we starve ourselves of beauty? if the world is going to burn then i want marshmallows.
hedonism is healthy.
Aphrodite on a Swan
As soon as eros enters his life, the lover is lost, for he goes mad. But where is the point of entry? When does desire begin? That is a very difficult moment to find, until it's too late. When you are falling in love it is always already too late.
Eros the Bittersweet, Anne Carson
