“There y’ go again,” she laughs, and shakes her head. He really just goes for it, doesn’t he? “Well, ain’t like I’m gonna complain too much ‘bout someone tellin’ me I don’t look my age.” Especially not when she knows she doesn’t. Hands on hips, she considers their current location in the sector, and then looks down at him thoughtfully. “Well alright then– what d’ ya wanna look for first? I can show ya a few good places t’ eat maybe. Places t’ shop too. There’s also a beach t’ one side an’ a forest t’ the other if you’re into any’a that outdoorsy stuff… though it’s gonna be too cold for th’ beach soon.”

Motioning down the street, the other hand settles into a pocket, and she rocks back on her heels. “Well, I dunno ‘bout fated, but if ya need someone t’ help ya settle in proper, then sure. Can’t just leave a young’un t’ fend for himself in this place.”

Well, he couldn’t help but try. Seeing a pretty girl smile was one of his favourite sights after all, whether it benefited him or not. But that aside, Kaoru started to wonder where he wanted to go.

Sure, there were probably other things that should have been on the priority list: finding a way home, finding out why he was even here in the first place, but perhaps looking into some more lighthearted scenarios could make the serious work he’d have to do later a bit more bearable.

“I guess a few places to eat would be nice. I don’t wanna starve,” and a place to take dates to, he wanted to add, but he got the hint that Ari probably would tease him again if he brought that up.

“You said there’s a beach here? Is this some sort of island or something? I’d like to see that too.”

There were plenty of questions that could fly through the air right now. When did Kaoru get here? What was he doing here, specifically? Why was Rei even thinking about such a costume in the first place? Some of these things were probably meant to remain mysteries.

“Oh? Kaoru-kun, I hadn’t the slightest clue you were brought here as well,” Despite what he’s holding, he still looks like there’s not an elephant in the room. In his hands. “How pleasant… ♪ Mm, but I can’t say I have. I don’t particularly intend to, either, you know?”

Doesn’t that just make things sound worse?

“I was afraid of that.”

Now Kaoru was stuck with the mental image of his unit leader dressed in... that, but there were more important things to address: “I could say the same to you but it’s not pleasant at all! This place seems kind of dangerous, doesn’t it? Why are you so calm? Don’t tell me you’re pretending to be senile again.”

Despite his frustration, there was a sense of relief in his tone. A familiar face and someone he could trust was something he needed to alleviate all the different emotions that were brewing up inside him from this entire situation.

“Put that thing down and help me find a way out of here, alright?”

Ah, picking out an appropriate costume was feeling like a hassle, by this point. He’d had ideas, and yet nothing in here stood out to him much. Perhaps he was just being too stiff about what he was looking for. Yes, maybe if he lightened up his criteria, he’d find something that–oh?

Something is hastily pulled off the shelves, and examined with careful eyes. Hah. This would certainly stir up some fun, wouldn’t it?

“Kukuku… Perhaps, I could just– ah.”

When Rei turns around, he sees Kaoru, standing there. Staring at him–or was he staring at the costume being held? ‘Sexy Bat’ was certainly… something else, after all.

Was he surprised? Disgusted? Confused? He wasn’t sure. At first, Kaoru was definitely excited to recognize the messy black mop of hair he was approaching but now... now, maybe not so much.

“Fancy meeting you here, Sakuma-san,” he definitely should sound more thrilled for their first meeting, however, “Please tell me that you finally met a nice girl and you’re picking out something fun for her.”

He finally, finally thinks he’s got the hang of how the first sector works.

Enough trial and error has told him what to look for before the buildings all unanimously decide to rearrange themselves at whatever time. Something he’s thankful for understanding now, considering it saves him a lot of embarrassment.

But while there were plenty of citizens who also grasped hold of the patterns, there were still those that hadn’t. There could be a myriad of reasons, between being new arrivals to not spending much time in said sector… either way, it could be a problem for them like it had been for himself for the longest time.

And he notices such a thing right now–someone making a beeline for a building’s door still, and he can tell they’re about to shift in a moment. Now, he may know how to tell right before they’re going to move, but he still has no idea what’ll reappear where. So he should say something, right?

“Oh– Look out, the building’s about to move, so– Aha?!”

Gakupo had rushed forward to try and warn the other boy, but somewhere along the line, he tripped. Right as the buildings switched, too. So instead of falling face-first into a door (somewhat tolerable) he fell face-first into a nice wall of concrete (absolutely horrendous).

What was that about ‘saving himself a lot of embarrassment?’

“That… certainly smarts, doesn’t it…” He lifts himself upright, rubbing his nose gingerly. At least he couldn’t get nosebleeds, but–no, wait, that would’ve given him a nosebleed, right? No? Is it weird that he’s not bleeding right now? Oh, for heaven’s sake. “Um– t-that was quite the, ah…”

He looks like a complete fool right now, right? He’s got to.

It really doesn’t take long for Kaoru to figure out that he’s not in any normal city. He had that pretty much figured out the second he realized where he was. And yet, to anyone watching him trying to find his way around, he probably seemed either brazen or not very concerned over the matter. Still, that didn’t stop him from trying to peek into a place or two, to see if anyone could give him some sort of answer to his many, many questions.

“About to--?”

He glanced over his shoulder just in time to see a tall, purple-haired boy collapse in front of him and just miss the building vanishing while another took it’s place.

“Uh.”

There was a lot going on in a split second, he had to take a moment to just stare at the display in front of him before turning back and realizing that the building he was about to walk into was completely different.

“What is wrong with this place?”

He felt like that was one of his many questions that he wouldn’t get an answer for any time soon so instead he focused his attention to the fumbling boy at his feet. He seemed okay, despite that fall looking rather painful. In fact, he looked perfectly fine. Still, Kaoru supposed manners were still a thing here.

“Are you okay? You kind of took a bit of a dive there,” he was a bit reluctant to hold his hand out to help the other up but he couldn’t just leave the guy on the ground like that, “Thanks for the warning. I think. Do they normally do that?”

Maybe this person could answer a few things for him.

The city was still overwhelming to Mika in many ways, but at least now he had a goal and focus to help him calm down and don’t feel completely alone. After all, he once swore to follow Shu to Hell and back if necessary, and even if there were already a lot of situations when he was able to prove it, their current state was an excellent example of his loyalty.

So obviously he was on his way again as a diligent Valkyrie’s member, rushing through District Alpha looking for Shu, carrying a bag of groceries and handicraft material. However, Mika still didn’t have a cellphone and even if Shu gave instructions to find his hut, it was still hard to navigate in the city and soon the doll found himself kind of lost, struggling and looking around nervously.

“Waa, waa… where can I find the…”

“OUCH–! Oyaaaaann…”

Trying to check Shu’s note, walk and protect the bag at same time, Mika didn’t pay attention while turning a corner and bumped hard against another person coming from the opposite direction, scattering the bag’s content across the floor and hearing the noise of the other reacting the impact too.

“Waa, waa… s-sorry, sorry! I was so clumsy, waaa… please, s-sorry…! P-please don’t be angry…!”

Mika rushed to apologize, still on the ground and bowing rapidly, afraid of a terrible lecture from a stranger. Hopefully they wouldn’ be too angry…

However, when he glanced at the other boy, he had an oddly familiar feeling, his expression still scared but also intrigued. Did they meet before…? He wasn’t sure if he should ask, so he just stared for a few moments without realize, his two-toned eyes blinking in curiosity.

While Kaoru was one to enjoy the occasional exploration, he wasn’t having that great of a time getting to know his new ‘home’. He was much more of a fresh air and sunshine and peaceful waves kind of guy and the lack of all those things in this district, if he even wanted to call it that, really wasn’t doing much for his mood. Perhaps if he wandered enough he could find his way out and maybe make a cute female friend or two who would let him crash on their couch.

“I feel like I’ve been walking around forever... but I guess going a bit further won’t hurt,” he sighed as he veered around the corner, unaware that his musing would actually be abruptly corrected as he slammed into another body.

“Whoa! Hey, watch it!”

He was stunned for just a second, partially from the collision but also from the shock of running into someone else after what seemed like eternal silence and isolation since he started his venturing.

“I’d get mad but I wasn’t really looking where I was going either... I didn’t think anyone else was down here,” he rubbed his arm that was hit while the other victim in their crash started to apologize profusely, “Hey, hey... I’m not angry or anything. Kinda sucks that after not seeing anyone for a while the first person I bump into is another guy but I guess I really can’t be picky right now!”

It’s only then that he realized that maybe their meeting wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

“Wait... do I know you? I don’t usually remember guys’ faces but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen you before.”

He takes a closer look, since the other boy was staring right at him. It’s not every day you come across someone with two different eye colours.

“You’re... Itsuki-kun’s unit mate, aren’t you? Mike or something.”

Another laugh bubbles up– he’s a rather shameless flirt, but she finds it hilarious if only because she’s not sure he’s entirely serious. It’s like it comes out of him before he can control it.

“Ain’t you jus’ a charmer? Hit on all th’ gals outta your age range, darlin’, an’ ya might get yourself in some real trouble.”

A hand on her hip, the other lifts to tap at her chin, pretending at thought for a moment. “Well, I wouldn’t much mind showin’ ya where it is, ain’t like I’m scared’a much, after all. But I’m thinkin’ showin’ ya around’s can count as my good deed for th’ day.” As if she only does one. Her hand pulls away from her face, held out in proper greeting. “I’m Ari, it’s nice t’ meet ya.”

“Oh? I couldn’t tell, really, really! But every girl deserves a little flattery now and then, whether she’s my age or not. I’m sure you agree!”

Okay, so no date. He couldn’t win them all. Still, Kaoru found some comfort in meeting someone in this weird city that seemed to know what they were doing. And, well, regardless of however old she was, she was still quite beautiful in his eyes.

“Ah, that would be really great. I’d probably get lost again without you anyway,” his hand reaches out, giving his lovely new friend a gentle but firm handshake, “My name’s Kaoru, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Ari-chan ♪ I hope we’re fated to spend more than just today together.”

That was a reaction she hadn’t expected– though there was a certain degree of charm to the seamless transition from sheepish confusion to cheery flirtatiousness. It’s enough to draw a laugh from her, mouth covered for a moment as she tries to keep from sounding like she’s wanting to make fun of him.

“Well– ain’t no one called me a ‘girl’ in a while, but thanks for th’ compliment.”

“Alpha’s one’a th’ underground districts– so it’s below Sector One. Lucky you, that’s jus’ one over. Less lucky’s that it’s underground an’ real creepy from what little I bothered t’ see of it.”

Despite feeling like he should be a bit more worried for his current situation, Kaoru was at least happy that he could get a smile from the friendly stranger.

“Well, I couldn’t not say anything, you caught my attention so easily ♪ I’m quite happy that you’re the first friendly face I’ve come across.”

“I guess that means you probably won’t want to keep me company as I walk there? That’s okay, I don’t blame you if it’s a bad place. Maybe we can find somewhere else to go first ♪ You can show me around, perhaps?”

If he was going to be lost, he may as well score a little date along the way.

If there was a singular, easily-exploitable weakness in Ari’s armor, it was that she couldn’t stand to see a kid in trouble. Or even distress. Even if said distress was mild, at best, and said ‘kid’ wasn’t as young as some might expect. But hey, teenagers needed help too.

“Well don’t you jus’ look lost as can be.” Which really, wasn’t untrue. “Where ya headed? Didn’t jus’ get here, did ya? Cause if so, here’s hopin’ they put ya someplace nice.”

Perhaps taking a small nap by the fountain wasn’t a good idea after all. Maybe this was some weird, lucid fever dream. Either way, Kaoru was staring blankly at his phone (if he even wanted to call it that?), not quite sure what to do. He’s so distracted that at first he doesn’t hear the voice calling out to him.

“Oh, sorry, sorry! I wasn’t paying attention! I guess I just got here, wherever here is... I’m a bit confused but I’m sure I’ll be fine now that such a pretty girl is here to help me ♪” he tries to remember where he was told to go, “Does Alpha sound familiar to you?”
