I swear the Ise Monogatari is much more fun if you read it like it's some kind of lyrical comedy. Like this shit is hilarious, especially when they start dissing the Fujiwara

The coolest thing about the Ise Monogatari is that future authors looked back at Ariwara no Narihira and they went like: "Ariwara no Narihira is historical figure? Not anymore! Now he's our OC"

And they made him do a bunch of random stuff (love them for that)

The rest of the chapter actually goes like this:

So yeah, one of the things he did was send a love letter to his father-in-law. Which was apparently not enough because he also sent one to a close friend of his:

And I'm guessing this might be referenced in a way when Mototsune stationed his brothers at Takako's house to avoid that she interacted with Narihira.

So I thought I'd share a little bit of my experience reading the Ise Monogatari.

Turns out that the flashback from chapter 7 is actually based on chapter 6 from the Ise Monogatari. Funnily enough, the Ise mentions that Takako was "extremely young", but doesn't give her an age, while in Outen no Mon, she's 11 (which yeah, it's extremely young). It also mentions that she was living with her cousin, Akirakeiko, who was already Emperor Montoku's consort.

In Outen no Mon the ones that for her are Kunitsune and Tōtsune, but in the Ise Monogatari it was originally Mototsune (the Horikawa Daijin mentioned there) instead of Tōtsune.

We can assume that Mototsune was asleep at the time and failed to show up/j

Musings of the day: That was the subtlest (and also weirdest) way of asking someone if they're gay ever. I love the "You're gay? Well, fine by me, but I'm telling your future wife."

And yeah, Haseo keeps alluding to Ning being a woman, but I didn't know how to make it sound natural otherwise. I'm sorry. You'll have to imagine that the rest of the characters are not paying much mind to what he's really saying (which is not too far off from reality) so that the scene after Michizane finds out his gender makes sense.

Anyway, the grand finale (for this arc, I mean) next week!

I'm doing typesetting for the next three chapters and, man, I'd forgotten just how cute and funny Haseo was in these chapters. He's a total simp, but his heart is in the right place.
