Astrology 101: An Introduction to Your Chart
Your natal chart is a snapshot of the sky when you were born.
The constellations take up equal amounts of real estate in the sky on your chart, and you stand in the middle. Imagine if you could look up at the sky and see every planet clearly. All of the constellations along the ecliptic have divided their respective chunks of sky into their own unique territories, like a clockâthese are the signs. 12 to 1 is Aries, 1 to 2 is Taurus, and so on.
You are at the center of this clock, but the clock has many hands. The clock has a hand for each planetary body, for your ascendant, for your midheaven, etc.
Ignore ascendant and midheaven for a momentâthe planetary bodies go around the clock at the speed of their planetary orbits. The Pluto hand CRAWLS around the clock. The Mercury hand speeds around it in a tizzy. They go around and around and around and thenâ
Someone slams the big red button. All of the clockâs hands stop. Why? Because you were brought into the universe.
â
What Makes a Zodiac Sign?
Back in ye olde Greek days, ancient astronomers noticed that the whole sky of stars all moved together (we know now that itâs because the Earth is spinning and orbiting the sun). However, there were some lights that traversed through the canvas of stars and moved at a different paceâthey named them âplanets,â which translates to âwanderer.â They also noticed that all of the planets (and the sun and moon!) moved across the same line in the skyâthis line is called the ecliptic.
Thereâs tons of constellationsâprobably hundreds!âbut thereâs only twelve that intersect with the ecliptic. These are the zodiac signs.
Whenever someone says that âthe sun is in Taurusâ or âSaturn is in Capricorn,â that planet is literally traversing through that particular constellation in the sky. And thatâs pretty cool, imo.
â
Your Three Big Signs
In your natal chart:
The constellation the SUN is located in is called your sun sign. Back when the Greeks invented the Zodiac, the Earth was the middle of the universeânot the sun, as we know to be true now. Your sun sign represents you at your core. Your true self.
The constellation the MOON is located in is called your moon sign. This sign represents your internal self. How you react to things on the inside. How you perceive things.
Your ASCENDANT or RISING sign is the constellation that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the specific time and location you were born. This sign also determines your MIDHEAVEN, because your ascendant determines the starting point for your houses. Your ascendant sign is how other people view you. Your âexternal maskâ (or, as I like to call it, your âcustomer service faceâ haha). It is your first, natural reaction to new situations.
â
A Clock Within A Clock
Next, thereâs houses. House I is your ascendant, and each following house goes in rotation through the Zodiac signs (unless you land on a cusp). This second circle of shenangigans is overlaid on top of the âclockâ we talked about earlier. This is why you need someoneâs birth location in addition to their birth time when you do their natal chart. Without it, you donât know what sign was on the horizon when they were born. Itâs important to note that for some weird reason, not every house is the same size? Some are smaller than others, unlike the perfectly spaced out constellations.
The Houses:
House I is the house of self and self-image. (ASCENDANT)
House II is the house of self-worth and money.
House III is the house of communication.
House IV is the house of home, family, roots, and security. (IMUM COELI) [1st mystical house]
House V is the house of creative self-expression, romance, creativity, pleasure.
House VI is the house of health and service.
House VII is the house of relationships and other people. (DESCENDANT)
House VIII is the house of transformation and sexuality. [2nd mystical house]
House IX is the house of belief systems and higher learning.
House X is the house of career, responsibility, and reputation. (MIDHEAVEN)
House XI is the house of aspirations, personal goals, and groups.
House XII is the house of self-undoing, privacy, secrets, and soul growth. [3rd mystical house]
Other important parts of a natal chart include the MIDHEAVEN, the IMUM COELI, and the DESCENDANT:
Your MIDHEAVEN is the cusp of the 10th house of the natal chart, and represents our visible achievements in the eyes of society (basically, your reputation). Itâs our âpublic faceâ as opposed to the more personal face of the ascendant.
Your DESCENDANT sign is on the cusp of the 7th house of the natal chartâdirectly across from your ascendantâand represents the type of person you are the most attracted to (and that are attracted to you). These are people you easily get along with.
Your IMUM COELI (Latin for âbottom of the skyâ) is on the cusp of the 4th house, across from the midheaven. The Imum Coeli is said to refer to our roots and also to the least conscious part of ourselves. It symbolizes foundations, beginnings in life, what may have been experienced through parental inheritance and homeland influences, need for security and relationships with the home and family life. It also may describe the circumstances that we will encounter at the end of our lives.
â
Heavenly Bodies
Weâll just cover the planets for now and worry about asteroids later. Hereâs a list of the planets and how often they change zodiac signs:
The Planets:
Sun (your personality; every month)
Moon (moods & emotions; every 2-3 days)
Mercury (mind & communication; every 3-4 weeks)
Venus (love & attraction; every 4-5 weeks)
Mars (drive & energy; every 6-7 weeks)
Jupiter (luck, growth, & wisdom; every 12-13 months)
Saturn (discipline, fear, & challenges; every 2-3 years)
Uranus (change & originality; every 7 years)
Neptune (dreams & healing; every 10-12 years)
Pluto (power & transformation; every 12-15 years, can vary)
â
So what do we get when we combine all of these? Well, Iâm glad you asked!
PLANETS tell us WHAT is happening.
ZODIAC SIGNS tell us HOW itâs happening.
HOUSES tell us WHERE itâs happening.
For example:
MERCURY in ARIES in the FIRST HOUSE could be interpreted as:
This person is very quick-witted and sharply intelligent. It is very important to them that others know that they are intelligent. They are unafraid to argue and butt heads with others.
Astrology and Elemental Imbalance
Elemental imbalances occur when an individual has a limited element present in their birth chart and most often an excess of another. An unattended imbalance can cause stress of extremes of an element being projected by ones personality (Think of the knights in the Tarot).
Having 10 planets in the natal chart, including the rising sign, we naturally have a high chance of having an elemental imbalance in our birth chart and personality.
An imbalance of elements often looks like a minimum of 2 planets in an element, often seen as only having 2-0 planets missing from being familiar with that elements associations.
Having aspects from planets  that naturally contain the missing elemental energies prominent in the natal chart (example, if you lack air but have many mercury aspects), this can aid the elemental lack, though it will not necessarily bring the elements in ones personality into balance for the planet will still be in an excess sign (example mercury in pisces), and it will still act accordingly to the element itâs placed in.

Air Signs: Gemini/Libra/AquariusÂ
Earth Signs: Taurus/Virgo/CapricornÂ

How to balance your elements
When we are unbalanced, we either draw others to use (or us to them) to act as an external reflection of the things we lack within ourselves, however, its possible to engage in other activities that can help bring our elemental lack into appropriate balance that can allow for self-healing and improved wellness.
At times due to elemental imbalances in out chart, we may be drawn to another who has excess of the element we lack (even signs) as to experiences a sense of âying and yangâ by interacting with another. You may find you personally may greatly clash with another, yet you are reluctant to part because they seem to âfulfilâ you in a way you canât explain.
For the element you lack the most in your chart, see the table below to find out ways you can help bring the lacking element in your personality.

Pink Fairy ArmadilloÂ
Known as the smallest species of armadillo, the pink fairy armadillo has a body that is approximately 90-115 millimeters in length, excluding the tail. It is called pink fairy armadillo because its body is pale rose or pink in color. What makes this animal special is that it can bury itself completely in just a few seconds when it is scared.
