Add Some Oomph to Your Spells with Magical Timing
Like herbs, oils, and crystals, you don’t need to work with magical timing for your spell to be successful. You can cast a spell at any time, no matter your intention, and get your desired results. However, working with the energy of the sun, moon, and days of the week can add an extra power boost to your magic.
Think of it this way: certain energies are dominant at certain times. Those energies are easier to connect with because they are closer at hand, so to speak, so you can bring them into your life and your spells more easily and in a more powerful way. That doesn’t mean you can’t call on other energies during these times — it just means that you may not connect to them quite so easily.
If you choose to work with magical timing in your spells, there are several yearly, monthly, weekly, and even daily cycles you can align your spells with.
The Cycle of the Sun: Solstices and Equinoxes
These are the turning points that mark the solar year, and are associated with the relationships between day and night, light and dark, summer and winter. Each solstice or equinox marks the end of one season and the beginning for the next. Because they are so rare and so potent, these days are a great time for your “big picture” spells or for spells that need a big power boost.
Winter Solstice. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, and falls between December 20 and December 23, depending on the year. In some pagan traditions the winter solstice, or Yule, marks the beginning of the new year — you may choose to set intentions for the coming year on this solstice. After the winter solstice, the nights start getting shorter and the days start getting longer — so spells related to healing and bringing things into the light are especially effective at this time of year. The winter solstice marks the end of the “dark half” of the year and beginning of the “light half” of the year; at this point, our focus turns from inward reflection to outward manifestation. You may choose to think of the time between the winter solstice and spring equinox as a “planning phase,” where you examine yourself and your desires, decide what you want to work on in the next year, and make plans for manifesting what you want.
Spring Equinox. An equinox occurs when the day and the night are exactly the same length, representing a perfect balance between light and dark. The spring equinox marks the beginning of spring and occurs between March 19 and March 22. The Christian holiday of Easter and the pagan holiday of Ostara are both related to the energy of this equinox. At this time of year, the natural world is coming back to life as winter begins to fade. Plants are beginning to grow, and baby animals are being born. This is a powerful time of year for fertility magic and any magic related to new beginnings. You may choose to think of the time between the spring equinox and the summer solstice as a “planting phase,” where you “plant the seed” of the things you want to manifest and begin doing the work to make it happen.
Summer Solstice. This solstice marks the longest day and shortest night of the year. It occurs between June 19 and June 23. As I am writing this post, we are coming up on the summer solstice (June 20, 2020). Life, fertility, and growth are at their peak during this time of year, which makes this solstice a perfect time for big manifestation spells. At the same time, this marks the end of the “light half” and beginning of the “dark half” of the year, so after the summer solstice our energy shifts from outward manifestation to inward contemplation. You may choose to think of the time between the summer solstice and fall equinox as the “harvest phase,” where you reap the results of your hard work and manifest your desires in the physical world.
Autumn Equinox. This is the other time of year when the day and night are perfectly balanced. The autumn equinox occurs between September 19 and September 23 and marks the beginning of autumn. This is traditionally the time of year when crops are harvested, and many pagan groups celebrate harvest festivals around this time. Nature is beginning to die or go into hibernation in preparation for the coming winter. This is an especially powerful time of year for shadow work or for magic related to endings and transitions. You may choose to think of the time between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice as the “reflection phase,” when you retreat from the outside world to rest, focus on yourself, and do your inner work and self-healing.
Important Note: This post lists dates for the solstices and equinoxes in the Northern hemisphere. In the Southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed. If you live in the Southern hemisphere, you would observe the winter solstice in June, the spring equinox in September, the summer solstice in December, and the fall equinox in March.
The Cycle of the Moon: Lunar Phases
If you don’t have time to wait for the appropriate solstice or equinox, you can still connect with the cosmos in your magic. One of the biggest pros of the lunar cycle is that it happens roughly every month — so you never have to wait very long for the next full moon. The moon is also associated with magic and spirituality in several traditions, which makes it an especially powerful astral ally for witches.
New Moon. The new moon is when the moon is completely invisible in the night sky, and is the phase opposite the full moon. The new moon is a powerful time for shadow work (because it deals with things that are hidden) and for magic related to new beginnings.
Waxing Moon. The moon is waxing when it appears to be growing in the night sky; this is the phase between the new moon and full moon. This is a powerful time for any magic that deals with drawing something in, building something up, or strengthening something that already exists.
Full Moon. Many witches believe that the full moon is the most powerful time of month for any kind of magic. This is a good time to cast any spell that needs a serious power boost. The full moon is also an especially powerful time to release what no longer serves you or to work healing magic.
Waning Moon. The moon is waning when it appears to be shrinking in the night sky; this is the phase between the full moon and new moon. This is a powerful time for any magic that deals with sending something away, banishing negative energy, or bringing something to an end.
Dark Moon. The dark moon is the three day period immediately before the new moon. In some traditions, it is believed to be bad luck to cast spells during the dark moon. Other traditions hold that the dark moon is the best point in the lunar cycle for destructive magic, such as curses and hexes. Many modern witches don’t recognize the dark moon as a separate moon phase at all. I personally like to use the dark moon as a time for self reflection, and may focus on shadow work during this time.
Magical Correspondences for the Days of the Week
The days of the week also have their own unique magical energies, and each day is linked to a certain planet and to certain deities.
Sunday. Sunday is, of course, connected to the Sun and solar deities. Sunday is the best day of the week for any manifestation magic that needs an extra boost. Its energy is also associated with healing, personal growth, power, and success.
Monday. Monday is associated with the Moon and lunar deities. Monday is a quiet, introspective day, and can feel very ethereal. It’s the best day for magic related to intuition, nurturing, and shadow work.
Tuesday. Tuesday is associated with Mars and with gods and goddesses of war and action. (It is named for the Norse/Germanic god Tyr/Tiw.) Tuesday is a very “active” day, and is good for magic related to action, activism, victory, or finding courage.
Wednesday. Wednesday is associated with Mercury and with gods and goddesses of wisdom, learning, and communication. (It is named for the Norse/Germanic god Odin/Wodan.) Wednesday is all about mental activity. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to thought, travel, communication (written, spoken, or digital), and learning/study.
Thursday. Thursday is associated with Jupiter and with gods and goddesses of prosperity, wealth, and protection. (It is named after the Norse/Germanic god Thor.) Thursday, like Jupiter in astrology, is all about outward expansion. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to career, prosperity, and wealth.
Friday. Friday is associated with Venus and with gods and goddesses of love, fertility, and sensuality. (It is named after the Norse goddess Freyja, or perhaps the goddess Frigg.) The energy of Friday is fun, lighthearted, and sexy. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to love, beauty, and sex/sexuality.
Saturday. Saturday is associated with Saturn and with time and wisdom. (The day and the planet are both named after the Roman god Saturn.) Saturday is practical and wise, but it does have a little bit of a dark side. It’s the best day of the week for magic related to banishing and protection.
Magical Times of Day
Okay, so you’d like to start working with magical timing, but what about emergency magic and last-minute spells? What if you don’t have time to wait for the next full moon, or even the next Sunday? You can still align your spell with magical timing! There are several moments of power each day, and each has its own magical associations.
Sunrise. Sunrise is, of course, the birth of the new day. This makes it the perfect time for spells related to new beginnings or expanded possibilities.
Noon. This is the peak or high point of the day. This is a powerful time for healing magic.
Sunset. Sunset is the end of the day, and forms a gateway between light and dark. This is a great time for spells related to accepting endings, releasing that which does not serve, and moving on from the past.
Midnight. If noon is the peak of the day, then midnight is the peak of the night. Midnight has a very ethereal, transformational energy. Like with the full moon, some witches believe that any spell will be more powerful if cast at midnight. This is a powerful time for both banishing and attraction magic.

Now Look What You’ve Gotten Yourself Into - A Return-to-Sender Curse Protection Jar
This jar recipe is designed to intercept any negative energy sent by someone, detect who it’s from, and then send it back with a few extras.
What You’ll Need:
One small jar
2 parts salt
1 part dried minced onions
1 part garlic powder
1 part black pepper (ground or not; it works either way)
1 part chili pepper flakes
1 part cinnamon
Begin by pouring in one part salt. Acknowledge that this is to protect you, and act as one of the walls to trap incoming energy.
Add the dried minced onions, garlic powder, black pepper, chili powder, and cinnamon. Top with the second part of salt to act as the final barrier for any curse energy that finds its way to you.
The correspondences for the ingredients are listed below for this spell:
Minced onions - for them to cry the tears their curse might have caused (when cutting a fresh onion, sometimes people tear up due to irritation of the eyes)
Garlic powder - to throw them off and disorient their sense of where they are and why they have failed (garlic powder often causes me to cough and have a hard time breathing if it gets into my lungs while I cook)
Black pepper - to irritate their thoughts and cause trouble in their life. It also acts as a stripping agent by cleansing away any facades placed on the curse they sent so that your jar can see who it was from.
Chili pepper flakes - to sting their pride and further bring them bad luck and misfortune.
Cinnamon - to boost the affects of this spell, and speed the return-to-sender portion of it up, sending the energy away quicker.
Salt - to protect you, and trap the curse energy I side the jar before it is sent back.
Tap the jar as many times as you like after screwing on the lid. This helps it “settle in” to the energy around you, thus becoming more discrete and unsuspected.
Place somewhere in your home to catch the energy. To check if anything new has been found and sent away, you can either feel its energy change, or do divination to get a direct answer that way.
Return to Sender Spell
Some of you guys may already know this spell. It is very simple and works like a charm!
If you suspect someone has cursed you, or you are just having a bought of bad luck this spell should work! It has for me!
All you need is a black taper candle, flying devil oil, and a sharp tool to carve the candle with.
Take the sharp tool and carve “RETURN TO SENDER” all over the candle then anoint the candle with the Flying Devil oil…light it and let it burn out!
The Flying Devil oil is just a mixture of olive oil and red pepper flakes, OR you can just anoint the candle with the oil and roll it in the red pepper flakes!
The three virtues of the Magician
Ever since I started studying magic, I’ve apprehended everything in a very scattered way. No head and no toes. With time I started understanding in my own way how to sort everything in my head. This is how I arrange everything while I study.
The Virtue of Knowing (Gnosis)
The passive Virtue. It does not talk about knowledge in the superficial sense of the word. Knowing here is related to the acknowledgement, understanding and observing of the realities, not just cognitive learning. I divide this Virtue in two Hylegnosis, Aithergnosis.
Hylegnosis relates to the knowledge of all things material. Here the studies of Astronomy, Herbology, chemistry and others apply.
Aithergnosis relates to all that can be known and observed within the Astral Light (in Qabalistic terms, from Tipheret to Yesod). This virtue is related with Clairvoyance.
Meditations within this Virtue deal with passive observance.
The Virtue of Daring (Thaumaturgy)
The active Virtue is related to the performing of magical deeds. From the performing of visualization and manipulation of energy to the most complex ceremonial magic. Invoking, evoking, transfiguration, transmutation, projection and manipulation.
Meditations within this virtue deal with active visualizations, astral projection and creation.
The Virtue of Being (Theurgy)
Perhaps the most important Virtue, deals with the sublimation of the self and building the Body of Light. This is the true area of the Magician. It appears as the basis for the expansion and growing of Consciousness.
It’s tools include active and passive meditation, ceremonial magic and daily behaviour.
Do you have any recommendations for any astral witch blogs? I'm really interested in astral travel and I'd love so resources (ie technique, if there are specific constant astral locations, information about the denizens of the plane, astral powers, etc)
I guess maybe @insaneastraldragon would wanna be mentioned here - my personal friend. I remember teaching him how to set up his shields, and then he went and made a fucking dragon. The student always surpasses the teacher, sigh…
I know of people who have written astral travel posts. You can always ask them these questions.

The dynamics of astral travel
Here I’m going to discuss how to figure out where you are in mind-space (the astral), how to travel to another location, and the dynamics thereof. Please note that this guide is not about etheric travel (out of body experiences in the physical plane) but rather focuses solely on astral travel (out of body experiences in the personal and/or collective unconscious).
When we travel on the physical plane distance is measured in length, measuring physical space between two objects or locations. On the contrary in the astral you can be walking for an eternity yet only cover a tiny bit of territory, or maybe none at all. The first difference between astral and physical travel is that in mind-space distance is measured by affinity or sympathy rather than the literal distance between two locations.
Any idea or concept can create a whole reality in the astral, bigger than anyone could explore in one lifetime. This means that even if you are travelling down a road you may not actually leave the astral space of that concept. The reality you are travelling through will have doorways to other astral spaces which are in affinity with where you are. As an example if you are travelling through the idea of “Pleasure” then there might be objects, entities, or places within this pleasure reality which will lead you to “Sex”, or “Video Games”, or maybe even “Laziness”.
The way to tell where you are in the astral is simple. Everything in the reality you are seeing will be a correspondence of the idea you are travelling through. If you don’t have a magick symbol set of correspondences then this might be a bit trickier and will require introspective analysis of each object around you. Having such a system of symbols learned will allow you to quickly orient yourself.
For example if you have memorized the correspondence tables in Liber 777 and you find yourself in a scarlet red, pentagonal room with an orange roof and Horus holding a ruby then you right away know your current astral location is the Sephira of Geburah. If I saw a boat made of amber powered by a furnace then I can guess it will lead me to the path of Cheth (connecting Geburah and Binah).
As a less systematic example I could be travelling through the reality of “Love”. There are many couples and families around me, and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves whether they are with someone or alone. Everything I see around me is beautiful and passionate, Eros (the God of Love) soars above in the skies. I find two stores side by side. From one people are walking out with delicious food, beautiful clothes, awesome trinkets and electronics. From the other come out lovers more enamoured with eachother than any I’ve seen before, they’re literally glowing with love. If I enter that door then I will enter the world of “Spiritual Love”, and if I enter the other then I will be taken to “Materialistic Love”. In the latter I might end up finding a “door” leading to the idea of “Materialism” and have travelled from Love to Materialistic Love to Materialism.
These “doors” aren’t always so obvious. In the reality of “Love” I might see an ex who had traumatized me with abuse and in one glance I begin to transition into the world of “Fear”. Simply focusing on an idea can project you from the astral reality you were in and into the idea you were focused on. Stray thoughts or concerns might create tunnels and pull you into their realities. Focus and clarity are essential in the beginning stages of developing your ability to accurately navigate through mind-space.
Learning how certain ideas or concepts affect others allows for a greater scope of control. As an example the various banishing and invoking pentagrams are all mental constructs (concepts) that an adept has charged with a certain meaning. Once they are built up in hir personal unconscious then the adept can use these symbols in the astral to create the corresponding effect.
If something, whether a situation or an entity, is getting out of hand in the astral then one can use a banishing pentagram which correlates to the element which would rule that entity or place. One could also invoke a God or an Archangel that can resolve the situation.
The above example is simple yet common, but the number of interactions between various symbols and the results of those interactions are far beyond the limit of simply banishing and invoking. Put a flaming sword in a cup and a creature might appear. Paint a mirror red then walk through it like a portal. Take your astral heart and make of it a rose, then offer it to Babalon.
The changes we make here in mind-space will reflect back in our own selves. We can effectively reprogram aspects of ourselves and grow to deeply understand the structures within our unconscious. All through the alchemy of symbols and ideas, as described above.
It is rumoured by the whispering lips of the adepts that if one fashions their mind and personal unconscious into a structure capable of receiving the divine then you will find access to the collective unconscious. Here, in this greater mind-space, you can learn of things well beyond the limits of the self. It is rumoured to hold secrets of nature and divinity, of all men as well as all Gods and Goddesses.
But that is a conversation for another post.
Beginner’s Astral: Healing
If you haven’t already, please read my introductory post on astral traveling here. I am not talking about astral projection, but instead about astral travel. There is a difference! All you need to learn how to do is meditate and visualize. A starter exercise to get you on your way is in the article I linked above.
This is a very simple healing exercise I like to do every so often to cleanse my energy.
Set up your protection in order to prepare for your journey. A simple shield around you will do wonders for this exercise since you are not traveling outside of your own sanctuary that you will be traveling in.
You can choose to ground yourself, but that is entirely up to you.
Quiet your mind, meditate, and find yourself in the astral. If you don’t know how to do this, please visit the link above. You can even use the forest exercise that I gave you in that article and incorporate this into it.
Start to think about what type of energy you want to cleanse you. You can create a large pond filled with cleansing water, or you can visualize fire that you will step into, or even rain that will wash away any gunky energy that you’re carrying around.
Surround yourself with that energy and imagine it reaching every corner of your body. Know that it is cleansing and purifying your energy while revitalizing it. I will give different examples below to give you an idea of different ways I have cleansed myself.
Start to become aware of our physical world and step out of the astral.
That’s it! It’s really that simple. There are so many ways that you can cleanse yourself. The best part about it is that you will be able to choose the type of energy that you associate with the most.
Typically, I like to play natural sounds in the background depending on what exercise I’m doing. If my cleansing involves rain, I listen to thunderstorms on YouTube. If my cleansing involves fire, I listen to the crackling of fire. It’s all up to you! Here are a few examples. Be creative! You’re not limited to just these:
You find yourself in front of a large pond. The water is clear and buzzing with energy. You find yourself walking towards the pond and soon you are waist deep in it. Cup the water in your hand and start bathing yourself. Allow the clear water to reach deep within your energy and wash away the heavy energy that you carry around.
A flurry of fire starts to surround you. It doesn’t burn, but is instead warm to the touch. The fire starts to grow close to you and envelops you. You know that it is permeating deep into your energy, burning away all the old and heavy energy you carry. Allow the fire to burn and revitalize your energy until all that’s left is new energy, reborn like a phoenix.
You look up at the sky in your sanctuary and see that a storm is coming. It isn’t ominous, but instead it brings electric energy. It’s here to empower you. The rain starts falling, slowly at first. One by one, each drop falls and you feel the warm rain start to pick up in speed. As the rain falls on you, it washes away all of the heavy energy you carry. The thunderclaps in the sky recharge you.
I think you get the idea! Cleanse yourself of old emotions, old memories, or just old energy that you’ve been carrying around with you. Sometimes I re-apply any wards or shields that I have on my astral body after I’ve wiped my energy clean. You can do this as often as you’d like. If you have any questions, let me know! -Sanies
Surviving the Astral
To retain your dignity, free will, as well as sanity during astral travels one must be vicious. The universe is a predatory thing, your will being the prize prey.
To the magus a fate worse than death is obsession. Once one becomes obsessed their actions, thoughts, as well as whole being becomes controlled by the obsession. Many great men + women fell from heaven due to their obsessions.
Thus every entity encountered must be scrutinized, skepticism being the Sword that defends the castle from conspirators. Without an entity being tested to the limit of your occult knowledge one leaves their self open to being fooled. This is where learning symbols, alphabets, qabala, etc. comes in to play.
Simple lying spirits can be tested using the invoking pentagrams + hexagrams. If they are found to be lying they can be banished using the proper banishing pentagrams + hexagrams. As an example if a spirit claims to be an Angel ruling Jupiter then using an invoking hexagram of Jupiter should do it no harm. The entity should be able to give the sign of Jupiter without any problem, they should be able to speak the divine name ruling Jupiter, etc… If the entity is found to be lying then you utilize the banishing pentagram of the earth, this not working the aspirant will go through the other banishing symbols accordingly.
More advanced spirits of lower nature can be more tricky.. As an example if a fire elemental masquerade to be the Archangel Michael he will easily pass the basic test (being of the same element, Fire, as Michael). In this case one may use the divine name ruling the element of Fire to command the entity to reveal it’s true nature.
Even then.. Very tricky spirits may pass this test. The final test will be one done after the experience/vision. When the aspirant sits down to analyze the occurrence they will look over all the symbolism of the vision, the name of the entity, any sigils given, etc…
Lower intelligences lack the genius to create a perfectly harmonious vision. Correspondences will be wrong, gematria will not make sense, symbols will contradict, etc… Divine intelligence, on the other hand, is capable of the highest genius. Visions of this sort will have perfect correspondence of symbols, matching gematria, sigils + names which prove themselves through harmony.
Any divine intelligence should be expected to know + understand all of your occult knowledge. Even more affirming are those which reveal further discoveries to you which were not yet known or understood (in alignment with your prior knowledge, not contradicting).
There is one exception to this law, a very important one.. Any obsession, no matter how small, will allow the intelligence full access to your mind + storehouse of knowledge. Meaning that if you do not properly test an entity it may grow to obsess you, at which point testing it becomes very difficult since it knows all you know. In this scenario the route to testing it properly will lay in having to willfully reject the entity, denying your obsession fully. Even if you believe this entity to be your highest self, you must reject it until a time when you have gained new occult knowledge. At which point you may test the entity once more, against this new knowledge. Making sure the whole time to keep an aura of a skeptic + warrior, showing no sympathy or love to the entity until it pass this test.
Any divine aspect will pass these tests without a problem. It will never take offense to your seeking of truth by testing it. A lower spirit will fail these tests, most likely attempting to lie its way out of the failure & trick the practitioner (most often using their own desires against them).
