10 fics I’m proud of in 2019
I debated about whether or not I’d post this, part of me didn’t want to come across as attention seeking or whatever, but I decided to say ‘fuck it’ and post it anyway.
If you’ve been following me for a little bit, you probably know that I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my writing. It’s been an uphill battle to try and be more positive about my writing in general, but I do think that this year it’s gotten better (despite a few cringey fics I won’t mention), and I’m proud of that.
So now that 2019 is almost over, have 10 pieces that I’m proud of, not necessarily because they’re good but because I pushed myself in little ways to write them:
1. Handsome Devil
“Now, tell me my dear. What’s a sweet, pretty young thing like you doing summoning the Devil on a night like this?”
Rook couldn’t help but shiver and flinch as he came to a stop in front of her, closer than before. Far from being offended, his smirk widened as his eyes flickered across her face, drinking in every delightful ounce of her fear.
2. Little Brother
“How’s it goin’, little man?” Jacob asked, reaching down into the crib to pick him up.
He was rewarded with a gurgle as he shifted John to his hip.
“Yeah, I know. Let’s go change that diaper, hm? Then we can get you fed.” He booped John’s tiny little nose, smiling softly as his face scrunched up in response. “Gotta keep you strong.”
3. Run, Rabbit, Run
They were just nearing the Elmdale turnoff when Rook spoke again, her voice quiet and hesitant, “Why are you helping me?”
It was a good question.
“I don’t know,” he eventually answered, as honestly as he could.
4. Hallowed Ground
Rook’s heart stuttered, skipping a beat. Her eyes darted up to meet his, narrowing in a guarded frown, “Who said I’m running from anything?”
The Father laughed gently, “I did not mean any offence, but I’ve been around long enough to recognise the fear in your eyes, my child. You’ve come to me in the middle of the night,” his gaze shifted to her thigh, and her stomach lurched when she remembered the knife and pistol she’d strapped there, “armed and with blood on your hands.”
5. And Grace Will Guide Me Home
Joseph watched her for a moment. “She was a sweet, innocent thing. She was only a baby when they took her from us - just over a year old.” He smiled softly, a distant look in his eyes. “We used to sing to her to drown out the fighting, calm her when she cried. She liked my voice the best, I think, but it was always Jacob that she reached for.”
Rook took the offered photograph, smiling despite herself at the chubby cheeked baby resting on her big brother’s lap.
6. What a Wicked Thing to Do
He didn’t reach for her as she scrambled to her feet, didn’t utter a word as she picked up the knife that she’d dropped and ran, but breathing hard and with an unreadable look in his eyes, Jacob watched her go.
His soulmate, fleeing like hell itself was on her heels.
7. Ugly Sweaters Are Essential
“I believe I only ordered two boxes. There’s four of us, exactly how many cookies do you think we’re going to eat?” he asked with a laugh as stepped aside to let her inside.
Eleanor grinned, “Well, if their sweet tooth is as bad as yours I figured it was better to be safe than sorry.”
8. Follow Me
“Are you tired, my dear?”
Rook could only close her eyes, willing the tears away - it was a useless effort, they spilled down her cheeks as her body shook with silent sobs. “Why won’t you leave me alone?”
9. Crawl Home to Her
“I think he hates me,” Rook mumbled. Why else would he be there, if not to torment her? He never spoke, not a word, not even when Rook had fallen on her hands and knees and begged him. He just watched her with those big, baby blue eyes of his. He was a ghost, nothing more.
10. Eye for an eye (tooth for fuckin’ tooth)
“Junebug, you ever considered the possibility that maybe they like you?” Benny asked, that ever present lopsided grin wide across his face.
Rook scoffed, pointedly ignoring them as they walked to their usual booth, Jacob calling out a greeting as they passed. “Oh yeah, it’s real romantic stuff. Say Benny, how did you go about wooing that stunning wife of yours? Was it by making her super uncomfortable at her place of employment and literally never leaving her alone?”
This incredibly talented writer has made me laugh, cry and hurt so much over this year. Csnt reccomend her fics enough, especially 2 and 9, my absolute favourites, and real emotional stuff. I'm so damn proud of you, hun!
Keep making me an emotional mess into 2020 ❤
