Yeah former 8 year Starbucks employ here. This never happens. I’ve have had what amounts to a flip on this happen more often. Something like
“Welcome in what can I get you”
“I want a plain black coffee”
“All rights wha-“
“No sugar or cream or flavor or anything else.”

“I don’t want no caramachmocha flippy-do’s or frappachina-what-it’s. Just. A plain ol regular black coffee”

Alex Aster took a bit of a tumble… was it the marketing team or her own ideas on how to debut Lightlark? Probably both.
I remember seeing videos about the debut of Lightlark about a month or so ago. The video was of Alex stating she was getting a movie deal. I then recall a video of Alex referencing that she struggled so much to pay for her bf/fiancés medical bills*. Now I will denote that statement with an asterisk because I’m not sure if that video still exists or if it is a case of a Mandela Effect. However, everyone remembers the video of her comparing Lightlark to the Hunger Games and ACOTAR.
So now amongst other things such as promoted dialogue (via tiktok) not being in the final book nor anything to do with hunger games or ACOTAR, fans are pissed she misrepresented her book. Even to the point of people who haven’t received an advanced copy rating it as a 1 star review on good reads. In the same breadth the people who have rated it 5 stars have not read the book. They gave it a two sentence generic summary and that was all. I suspect these individuals are authors in the same publishing circle attempting to generate goodwill and/or draw others to read their books.
More than Alex’s self blunder, it shows how this industry shoved a bunch of shit into a book cover and marketed it as a misrepresented, rags to riches story* see my first asterisk about Alex struggling. I think the publishing company/editor did Alex a bit dirty by not giving her proper advice on how to handle the marketing. She already had two books published why did they not advise her to make it seem as those she was an established author who had experience? Her other books had above 4 stars so it is extremely weird the TikTok videos mislead the audience on Alex being a debut author.
Alex suffered from ignorance. I don’t believe she deserves the bullying and negative reviews from people who haven’t read the book, but she needs to own up to the mistakes that were made. Her publishing team also need to own up to their mistakes for letting her fly wild into the wind of snark. As of today Alex, a now public figure, has not issued a statement addressing these issues: of misleading the public on a rags to riches story* when she is from privilege, misrepresenting her book to include a vast amount of POC characters, misrepresenting the book to include dialogue, themes, and plots that were not in the final book, and for stating “it took me a decade to get published” when Alex already had 2 published books.
Alex withheld or lied about information to mislead the audience. Apparently, In Lightlark you have to deceive in order to win. Seems like Alex took that lesson into reality.
I hope every writer who sees this writes LOADS the next few months. Like freetime opens up, no writers block, the ability to focus, etc etc you're able to write loads & make lots of progress <3
