Pokémon GO Turns 10: The Summer the World Went Outside
There are moments in pop culture you can’t really explain unless you lived through them. You almost had to witness them with your own eyes. During the summer of 2016, it looked like entire cities had collectively lost their minds. When you suddenly saw crowds of people all heading in the same direction, your first thought wasn’t, “They’re playing a game.” It was, “Something must be happening.”…

i've had time for the ao yin/valko cancellation to sink in and here are my thoughts.
my understanding of what happened:
fans were angry because they thought the company was working on parts of the game (main story, quality of life improvements, etc.) but were instead working on the new LI
chn fans were the most vocal and angry with the company about this
from what i could see on chn socmed, people were being mean to ao yin but i think that's secondary to the real grievances which are the lack of progress in other parts of the game
there was also insensitive references made in ao yin's story, i.e. referencing unit 731 or 611.
due to the backlash, the company decided to scrap ao yin, go ahead with some of the other planned initiatives, and give some things to the players for free
please let me know if i got anything wrong. i'm not really involved in l&ds communities so i only get my news in bits and pieces
my thoughts:
overall, i am pretty disappointed
the issue with live service games is that the game is not finished, so there is still room for change
cfans have a lot of sway because they spend a lot of money on the game. i don't mean that companies should not listen to fans. but i think companies should properly balance fan feedback with artistic integrity. they clearly had a vision for a story with six LIs and they've given that up.
i do think the hate towards ao yin was overblown. to the point of attacking the company? please, it's a game. there are way bigger things to be mad about.
there is also apparently fighting between chn fans and international fans because chn fans believed that international fans had asked for a new LI. i don't think this is the case. i think international fans were simply more open to a new LI. and thus have been more disappointed with him being scrapped. (i know i am disappointed because i thought the new LI was interesting and cute)
i think the anger is mostly coming from infold/papergames' poor communication. a lot of players were under the impression that we were only going to get five love interests because qin che and xia yizhou had been announced a long time ago. we never got much of an announcement for ao yin. so players were under the impression that they were working on game mechanics instead of a new character.
i think scrapping ao yin was a bad idea. it seems that from the beginning, infold/papergames was planning on six LIs. there was the theory of six stellactrums = six LIs. and i believe ao yin was going to have a role in the main story (as do all of the other LIs). scrapping ao yin means that they're going to have to rewrite the whole story that they had planned.
six Lis for six stellactrums would have made battle mechanics more balanced. because every event, there could be one LI for each stellactrum.
with regards to the insensitive references, i feel those could easily have been corrected as i think it was just factual information. but maybe because there were so many eyes on infold/papergames, they thought that scrapping the character would be a big enough action to show that they had gotten rid of 'the problem.'
infold/papergames was the company that had tried to launch a new love interest for mister love: queen's choice which was met with lots of negative feedback from fans. to my knowledge, the new love interest still takes a backseat to the other love interests. the company should have learned from this experience and it looks like they learned nothing.
i feel bad for the people who worked on the new character. even if they are just subcontractors, those are still people who worked on the writing, the art, etc. i saw a post about some of the devs feeling sad that their project (little wolf) was scrapped.
infold/papergames decided to give everybody free deepspace wishes over the course of thirty days. i think they did this in the hopes that people will still keep logging in for the free wishes, and that after thirty days, people will calm down from the anger and forget about it.
i have still been playing these couple of days, but i have half a mind to quit because i am very disappointed. i'm disappointed that they launched the new LI so poorly, despite having past experience and knowledge that such events need to be handled very carefully with a dedicated fanbase. i'm also very disappointed that the product moving forward will not be what the intended final product was. i'm also very disappointed on behalf of everybody who worked on the new LI. we know how much work the game puts into bringing these LIs to life. from the trailer i thought his mannerisms were very detailed. not to mention all the writing. the text messages, the backgrounds, the new outfits.
