The aesthetics of mathematics
Mathematicians often appreciate the beauty and elegance of particular theorems, proofs, and definitions, attaching importance not only to the truth but also to the aesthetic merit of their work.
Yet the tendency to judge mathematical work according to aesthetic standards raises a number of difficult questions. What is mathematical beauty? Can abstract mathematical objects be literally beautiful? Is it reasonable to classify some mathematics as art?
Examples like the image above of the newton fractal of a 7th order complex polynomial, rendered from z = -16/9 + i to z = 16/9 â I, produces beautiful fractal patterns.
A number of authors in aesthetics and the philosophy of mathematics have tried to shed light on mathematical beauty by highlighting its relation to factors such as order, harmony, unity, symmetry, and simplicity.

7 Things to Quit
1. Getting your self esteem from others.
2. Constantly attacking and putting yourself down.
3. Thinking that others are better than you.
4. Expecting things to not turn out well.
5. Living in the past.
6. Fearing the future.
7. Being afraid of change.

no, i didnât, actually.
this site is so goddamn anti-recovery. iâve been spending years trying to get better but everyoneâs mindset of âif you spend every hour of every day wanting to kill yourself youâre valid uwuâ was just making my health worse. everyone on this site would be doing much better if they would stop being so negative.
itâs as if you want to stay mentally ill. you would think that people so miserable would want their lives to improve. if you want to get any better, stop rejecting every bit of positivity you see and forcing your toxic mindset on others.
Iâm always gonna be obnoxious and add to posts like this because theyâre so important. The messaging on this website so often boils down to âif youâre mentally ill, it means youâre special and if you get better you wonât be special anymore.â And god, that is such a dangerous thing to say to anyone but ESPECIALLY the young ones. If youâve been ill for most of your young life and then you come on here and see people saying that your literal disease is the most interesting thing about you, then what gives you motivation to actively try to recover?? Getting better doesnât just happen, it takes WORK, and this place should be bending over backwards to encourage people to roll up their sleeves and do that work, instead of telling literal children that their illness is a vital piece of their personality and theyâd be nothing without it.Â
Depression, anxiety, and other treatable illnesses are NOT who you are. They are a barrier that prevents you from being who you are.
