The brunettes eyes lit up when she saw the man jogging towards her. “Owen Davis”, she replied grinning, with open arms and hugging him tight, “What a treat it is to be home.” She pulled back and placed her hands on her hips. “Let me look at you, have you changed?” She teased, scanning her eyes slowly up and down him. “Certainly still as handsome as I remember.” Ivy gushed. Being in New York and constantly on camera with her news-anchor position had given Ivy a magnitude of self-confidence. She grinned again and gave him another hug. “Thank you for picking me up, I really appreciate it, getting my car here would’ve been a night-mare and I really needed a break from constant taxi and uber rides.” She let go of him again. “Ready to go? I’m dying to get out of this airport and to be honest, curious to see if you’re driving a mini-van yet.”
Owen smiled. “You look great as well. Taller.” He looked down at her feet. “You wore heels in the airport? i feel like that’s madness.” He shook his head taking her bags from her. “Not a problem. I had nothing better to do and besides who wouldn’t want to come say hi and welcome you back with big and open arms.” He scoffed at the idea of a mini van. “Never, ever. I may have full custody but I’ll never not be driving a truck. It wouldn’t be very me.” He shook his head. “Besides mini vans just don’t revve the same.”

The sound of Ivy’s pumps clicked down the airport ramp as she stepped off her plane. The last time she’d seen this airport was when she packed up everything she owned and set sail for New York years ago, with nothing but the excitement of her new job motivating her. But now she was back and even though she thought as if she was a completely new person, this town always would have a way of making her feel nineteen again. With her suit-case in hand, rolling behind her, she took out her phone and began to text her old friend Owen, whom she had previously asked to pick her up. Her surroundings hadn’t changed one bit, same gift store, same coffee shop, same sickening airport food. It was as if New Quinton was stuck in time and it made her wonder which of her old friends were too. As she made her way to the entrance she passed by a man covered in ink with a beanie hiding his hair, and the memory of Daniel ran through her mind. She wondered if he’d even come to something like this, she didn’t even quite know why she agreed to this. The automatic doors slide open and Ivy stepped out into the warm air, despite it being November, anything seemed warmer than the city right now. Her head turned side to side looking for anything similar too the Owen she remembered and she felt excitement bubble in her stomach when she thought she had spotted him.

Owen was nervous. Ivy had been a good friend to him and he hadn’t seen her in years. They talked every once in awhile and he jumped at the chance to pick her up, anything to let him do something between football practice and picking Carson up from dance class. With Practice running over Owen was running late. He hadn’t anticipated the traffic to the airport even with Thanksgiving a few days away and was worried about keeping Ivy waiting.
Parking made Owen want to scream and he thrilled to get the text from Ivy while he walked into the airport. He looked for her smiling as he saw the familiar brunette with a quizzical look looking at him. He waved jogging towards her. HIs arms instinctively wrapping around her. “Ivy Crowley. What a treat it is to finally have you home.”
“Youths.” He emphasized. “When it started to be become bad, that’s when it became noise.” Jeremy shook his head. “That’s ridiculous, man. Kids shouldn’t be treated like baggage. They like shun you then?”
Owen nodded. “It’s bad man. And they play it so loudly.” Owen laughed. “I’m just not as active as I once was. It’s not shunning, it’s just, uninterested. I spend time being a dad, a coach, and a teacher. I don’t do much honestly. Plus the woman in the area aren’t really my, type I guess.”
“You gotta be or else I’d lose my mind with three kids running around.” He chuckled. “Yeah see, this is why I’m still not a huge fan of people. They can be the worst sometimes, it sucks. But hey as long as they don’t start shit with you or anything.”
Owen nodded. “Kids are stressful. Carson likes loud music, and plays these pop songs. I’m 26, when did the youth’s music start to become noise?” Owen laughed. “They stay away from. Comes from the child drama. People don’t like my baggage.”
jeremy-band:
“Yeah, as long as they’re cool with me, I don’t have a problem.” Jeremy shrugged. “Is that true? Damn, I can’t even imagine working with that shit everyday. You should bring them onto the Jerry Springer show. I’m sure he’d love to take on a bunch of petty teachers.”
“Jeremy Band, dad of three and finally chill at the ripe age of 26.” Owen let out a laugh nodding. “Honestly we need it. Adults man they’re just as crazy as teenagers.”
jeremy-band:
“Damn, can’t believe we’re all gonna be back at it again soon. It feels like just yesterday we were all tryna get through school and shit. I’m glad we don’t have to go through all that again. I don’t even know how I managed to get through it in the first place.”
“Seeing everyone is a fun thing right? A good ole friendsgiving and a party of a party camping trip.” He tilted his head. “Also I work at the high school. I go through it every day. The US history teacher? Worse than Nash on her best day. Honestly all of them are so, catty, and desperate and even the male teachers go at it in the break room.”
Alec rubbed his tired eyes, “I know. I just know her enough to know that she’s gonna want me there. I guess when you basically raise a kid and everyone else leaves them, they kind of start to depend on you for the important shit.” He looked over at Owen when he tried talking him into joining the team again. “You know I can’t. Even if they wanted me back…You just…You don’t go back to a team that turned its back on you.”
Owen shrugged. “You know your sister better than I do.” He paused. “This is going to be really hard for her. Make sure you listen to her and keep what she wants in mind, not what you think is best. Good intentions don’t necessarily make happy endings.” He shook his head. “Bro, none of the team turned it’s back on you. All of us were pissed. We all wanted to walk out when we heard you got expelled. It’s bull shit, and we need you back. Coach even yelled at the newbie QB to be more like Hartwell. You needa just talk to him and I’m sure he’ll convince the Dean to take you back.”
“I know, he hasn’t shown up to any of the appointments. At this point, I’m gonna have to fucking go to birthing classes with her. My sister is devastated, dude,” Alec sighed heavily. “This whole situation fucking blows, man. I should be in Columbia, tearing it the fuck up for Carolina. Instead, where am I? Right the fuck back in New Quinton, living with Natalie’s parents while my fifteen year old sister has a kid.”
Owen cringed trying to imagine Alec at a birthing class. “You could probably get Natalie or Charlie or your mom to go to birthing classes. The awkward amount of times you’ll have to say I’m not the dad, just her big brother will be weird.” Owen nodded. “Man we need you back on our team. Fuck Columbia, that don’t deserve you anyway. Come back to us. We need your skills.”
“Not concrete ones. The fucker that knocked her up hasn’t been any help, either.” He ran his hands over his face. “Yeah, I’ve just had to do it more than most people, I think.”
Owen hated dead beats more than anything. “Dude that fucking sucks. That kid needs to own up in some capacity he is half of that kid. He’s gotta be there.” Owen shook his head at Alec. “You’re reasons are valid, and you’ve grown from them. A valid reason for a lie makes everything a bit easier.”
“I…Yeah, I guess I can’t really…” Alec trailed off, looking at the person’s phone. It was a screenshot of his sister’s instagram with her ultrasound on it. He sighed. “Yeah, I didn’t know she was going to post that…” He shrugged and sat down. “I had to lie to protect my family. I don’t think I should be given shit for that.”
“Bro no judgement, it’s just, woah. Does she have any plans?” Owen shook his head. “Everyone has their lies, especially for family. I get it.”
“We are, yeah.” She smiled and laughed. “Oh come on you know I’ve always got some love for New Quinton’s jester.”
“I know, what a privilege it must be to know me.” She joked.
“YOu got some love for me in the titanium heart? I’m honored. Blessed even.”
“I’m gonna miss you Ivy. Soon everyone will be out of this town and I’ll be the only one left.”
“Well you know me, ice queen, frozen heart, no love.” She laughed.
“The program I’m in right now, with the network, is connected from the school. That’s how I got the job. So I’d have to find another school up there and continue my courses.”
“You and Grace same to be doing well gotta have some love in there. Even if it’s not for me.” Owen faked a sniffle.
That’s awesome Ivy. I get to say I know a girl on tv in New York.
“I think i’d rather claim them as my own, they’re pretty fantastic.”
“But yes, New York. I’d have to move out there, obviously, and that is a very bold jump.”
That’s so mean Ms Crowley.
So what about school?
“It’s a promotion, of sorts. An anchor role opened up in the New York site and they want me to transfer and take the job. Can you believe that, NYC. Could you see me there?”
That’s awesome Ivy. Please tho if you use one of my jokes give me credit.
… Sorry. I’m just tense right now. Want me to buy your gross food as an apology?
A gentleman never let’s a lady pay. I’ve got it all. Even your death sticks.
Hey! I need these, Davis! I’m half dead over here, and it calms me.
I’m only saying it because you mock my mystery dorito chimichanga. Breathe Evan, it was only a joke.
