also uh minor spoilers in the headcanon below the cut ?? they’re really for last week’s ep but to be safe.

oz probably knew vernal was the decoy as soon as she and raven showed. it’s his magick that created the maidens, and he knew the last spring before she fled and joined raven’s tribe. either it was raven when she fled, or oz knew it was neither raven or vernal and knew the last spring would have trusted raven the most and done everything in her power to transfer her powers to raven when she fell. even if he didn’t know know, he would have at least have a feeling where his magick lied because again, it was his magick. the only reason he didn’t say anything is because a decoy only works so long as only one or two people know about it.

          there is hesitancy in how he carries himself; guarded, arms crossed and shoulders raised a little in tension he carries unknowingly. he has yet to look ozpin ( oscar? ) in the eyes. there is silence for some time before, eventually, the young arc speaks. 

         “…is it selfish, to still be mad at you for her? …even with all that’s happened. with everything i know now. i still…i still don’t know why. why py-” her name sticks in his throat, “…why did it have to be her?”

hesitancy  is  to  be  expected  at  this  point  .  it  must  be  difficult  talking  to  a  child  who  carries  one’s  old  headmaster’s  soul  .  talking  to  one  person  and  looking  at  another  entirely  .  ozpin  still  feels  hesitation  when  hearing  oscar’s  voice  rather  than  his  own  .

   ❛❛  i’d  hardly  qualify  that  as  selfish  .  loss  is  never  something  easy  .  and  certainly  not  something  quick  to  come  to  terms  with  .  ❜❜    a  pause  ,  a  moment  to  think  .  a  sigh  as  the  truth  rolls  out  .    ❛❛  because  i  knew  this  was  coming  .  salem  .  the  fall  .  all  of  it  .  of  anyone  ,  i  thought  she  would  have  the  best  chance  surviving  it  .  ❜❜
