i spin yarn, like, so much yarn. often gradients, often very fine yarns. i occasionally get myself into high yardage shenanigans and end up questioning my choices while knowing i will do the exact same thing again. i knit and am generally interested in textiles and fiber arts. i can also be summoned by mention of fountain pens and especially fountain pen inks

TdF 2026 Day 1

Prior to Day 1, I got a Turkish drop spindle and have been learning how to use it. I spun a partial braid (45g) and got it off on -1 days. The colorway is named Bougainvillea, but I do not have the dyer's name or company.

Then, having learned how to really use the spindle, I started TdF.

My dye sampler project, where I did 10g samples of 5 depths of shade of all 48 Jacquard acid dyes, then split them into two 5g samples. The plan has been to spin one of the 5g samples, so I can see not only what the dyed fiber looks like, but what a spun project from that fiber will look like.

I started with 644 - vivid violet.

I spun and plied two of the 5g samples, 0.125% and 0.25%, and halfway through spinning the third, 0.5%.

My goal is to get through as much as I can of the 48 colors, all done on the spindle.

Herzblatt is a great smallish doily to dip your toes into the pain and misery and is absolutely gorgeous besides, though Sechsblatt is a lot simpler and less likely to cause an individual to spontaneously combust.

Tour de Fleece reminder!

TdF runs from July 4 - 26 2026, with rest days (if you observe them) on Mondays the 13th and 20th.

If you want to do something extra silly, I'm going to try to get a survey together to track how much (weight or length) we spin this year. I'll post when I get it organised.

so what you're gonna do is you're gonna trim the top off a bulb of garlic, using the knife's edge to take off the tip of every individual clove, that's important. you're gonna place the garlic face-up in a square of tinfoil, drizzle with olive oil, wrap completely in foil, place in baking tray, repeat with a copious amount of garlic bulbs. you're gonna put that baking tray in an oven set to 375-400°F, for 30-50 minutes, until soft and browned. you're gonna toast some good bread, slather generously with butter and honey, maybe a tiny lil bit o' salt. and then. you're gonna SQUEEZE. OUT. THAT. ROASTED GARLIC. onto the butter honey toast. and you're gonna eat it. food stolen directly from the plate of the gods. that's what you're gonna do.

I've finished my first pair of socks!!

I waaaay over engineered them for each foot, the perfectionist in me 😅

They're cozy and comfy for all day, I'm really happy!

Few tweaks I'd make to the next set, but first I have to go and transcribe the pattern from my scribbles into something legible...

It's the worst weather here right now, and what do we do in the worst weather? We spin!!

This was made as a drum carding practice. I obtained a bag full of super soft merino wool commercial top roving pieces in all colours of the rainbow. Carded 5 batts using different techniques. The yarn has a slight gradient.

This is 170m/70g. 330g remain in my merino rainbow bag.

I learned:

Ink blue is a VERY DOMINANT colour in optical blending

Horizontal aligning of differences does fuck all in a batt since I tear off horizontal pieces for spinning...

Rather do some more blending for a gradient than less

Highlights get eaten by the spinning process. The resulting yarn always looks more dull than the batt

Splotchy highlights done with a contrast colour can preserve though!

I will eventually knit this into some sort of landscape beanie one day :) stay tuned!

I think I've finally narrowed down my Tour de Fleece plans!

I have two main goals: spin every day, and finish my treadle wheel WIP.

I have a few stretch goals, for which I earn a little treat (<$10) for completing. These are spinning at least 200g, combing wool for the first time and spinning it, and trying a new breed/fibre. That last one can be earned multiple times, but not for the same project. I'm actually very bad at rewarding myself, so I have a little list of things to pick from (Twix bars, fancy donut, fav panini).

I have a list of 6 projects to work on, so I'm not floundering on what to work on next, but there's no pressure to finish anything except the ongoing WIP.

If I finish a whole project, I can add $10 to my fibre festival budget. This one can also be earned multiple times.

i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

this also goes for aesthetic or -core titles. 'y2k tank top' is going to get you resellers and fast fashion brands advertising to people looking to meet a current trend. 'thin strap crop tank top' is going to get you a diverse group of results and not upcharge you to hell and back

additionally, shop second hand when you can, second hand and thrift sites typically organize clothes by the cut and color. theyll be more affordable than a depop seller curating you a style to sell you

More progress on my project! I had intended to set this up for consecutive turned twill, but it had been a while so I accidentally did bird's eye (laugh emoji.) I interspersed it with plain weave, and I'm quite happy with how it's turning out so far! The wool is stretching, but that is to be expected, and there has been minimal breakage! Also for your enjoyment some blackberry briars outside. Happy summer!

My feeties are in very pain so the spindle has come out for once

I have had this project on the go for like… 2 years? I think? I’m not a spindle spinner, I just can’t get into the rhythm of it as much as wheel spinning. But I do prefer working with Margo (my support spindle. she’s purple!) than any of my drop spindles. I’ve been spinning these rolags so long I do not remember what’s in them. Looks like merino, silk, angelina and maybe some bamboo? possibly some other kind of wool, like corriedale. I think I have it written down in my craft journal. But I do remember the set was from Woolie Cottage. After this little bit, I only have three rolags left to spin
