SELL BY: This is for grocery stores to know when to remove items from their shelves for sale. It does not mean that it is bad – usually has about 7 days left, however fresh meat, fish, and poultry should be cooked within a day or two at home. IF frozen, foods keep indefinitely. Eggs are a tricky item, the sell by date is 30 days after packing in carton, but they are safe in the refrigerator from 3-5 week at 40F or colder.

BEST USED BY: This is an indicator of quality and freshness, not food safety. Typically found with meat, yogurt, and eggs.
