Are female Yautja maternal? Do they love their sons and daughters?
Absolutely, 100%! I would even argue they care more than the males in many cases.
The reason I bring this up is because there’s a persistent misconception in the fandom about Yautja females. Many seem to believe that Yautja women are cold, uncaring, or view motherhood as a burden, that they aren’t maternal at all. But this simply isn’t true. A great example that challenges this misconception appears in the short story, Field Trip, from the novel Eyes of the Demon. It’s a surprisingly important chapter in terms of lore, yet it’s rarely discussed. The story features a pregnant Yautja named Donatiki, who is tasked with overseeing four rowdy, unblooded Yautja.
Throughout the story, we clearly see her motherly instincts on display, especially her concern and protective nature toward her pup.
Protective mama Yautja moments!
Donatiki expresses fear about going into labor in the middle of battle, which highlights the vulnerability female Yautja can experience in labor. She also describes the pain she feels throughout labor, directly challenging the misconception that Yautja females don’t feel pain. This story makes it clear, female Yautja absolutely DO experience labor pain. In many ways, they’re a lot more like human women than people assume.
The labor pain seems to be so intense that they can’t even move (heck even needs painkillers.).
A human chooses to help Donatiki in her time of need. It’s possible that female Yautja may also require assistance during labor.
Jessica offering comfort, and Donatiki accepting it.
After going through labor and setting aside her embarrassment about going into labor in front of humans, she shows a very motherly side toward her pup. She even says a line that completely shuts down the notion that motherhood is a burden to Yautja. Donatiki expresses how she has always wanted to be a mother.
Shifting to a different story, Bitter Hunt, which is told through the novel Eyes of the Demon, this one explores a moment where Ak’kili kills her rogue son. Though he was a dishonorable Yautja who brought shame to their family, Ak’kili still shows deep sadness. Despite everything he had done, her maternal instincts come through clearly in some moments.
That’s pretty much where I’m going to wrap things up. I know it’s not much to go on, but I still think it’s solid evidence that female Yautja do have a motherly side, at least from my perspective.
Anyway, that’s all I have on this topic.
