The second last day in Cambodia!!

In Asia now!!! Tomorrow off to Cambodia!
Uncle Brians + firstdays in Fijiii!
Uncle Brians In the morning of my last day in Australia, the 24th of May I woke up early, packed up my stuff and took it to the luggage storage place - then returned to the hostel and waited for the Uncle Brians bus to pick me up for the rainforest and waterfall tour. Two other girls who stayed in my hostel room in Cairns also went on the same tour. I hopped on the bus and we started making our way to the forest. There were actually two Uncle Brians tours operating that day, with about 14 people each. The uncle brian tours are basically all about having fun and their crazy tour guides. First we had to all introduce ourselves and later on we also played games on the bus and drew on the windows with whiteboardmarkers, listened to music and sang along. Sydney our driver and guide was a really entertaining somehow typically Australian guy. Our first stop was at some big boulders I forgot the name of. Anyways, the boulders were big and formed some gorge right in the rainforest. We learned about different plants and animals living in the forest as well. In the end whoever wanted to could go for a swim in a kind of rock pool and jump off different rocks. It was pretty cold and early in the morning so I decided to save myself up for the next spot, which featured a natural rock slide. At this spot we also had breakfast. Breakfast was pretty sweet, they prepared some lamingtons (sweet chocolate coconut sponge cakes), biscuits and fruit bread, water and orange juice. We drove on to the next spot, the Josephine Falls. After a short walk through the rain forest, where we learned about the stinging tree. Sydney briefed us shortly about what to take care of on the rock slide and how to work it. I got in my bikini and jumped into the veeery refreshing water. Swam over to the rock formation and wiggled my way over sat down and slided down the rock! It was incredibly funny and really cool! Afterwards we went for a bit of a drive, played a game were you had to pass on a little round thing to each other just with the help of a match in each person's mouth. After a while we reached the Atherton tablelands. This looks kinda like the lower Alps. Everything is really green and it's very hilly. Unlikely for Australia the temperatures were rather cold! Lunch was at a little tea house and they prepared some salad, chicken drum sticks and couscous for us which actually tasted really nice! They even had dessert for us! We had some self-saucing chocolate pudding and ice cream. With our stomachs filled up we were ready for the next stop and the highlight of our trip. The Milla Milla falls are huge waterfalls that are known from the Herbal Essences advertisement, where a girl is shampooing her hair in the water and then flicking her head out. Got back into our bikinis, got the camerad out and took some photos of us flicking our hair. Having all the photos we wanted shot, we drove to our last swimming point. A lake I also forgot the name of. The lake was crystal clear and you could see turtles and fishies swimming around. I didn't dip into that lake as it was already getting really cold. We had afternoon tea which consisted of hot chocolate and marshmallows as well as muffins. Our last stop for the day would be Peters Creek. This Creek is known for the Platypuses that inhabit the creek banks. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot these animals. So we've come at just around the right time. At first we didn't spot any at all, the water wasn't even moving a tiny bit and we were close to giving up - when suddenly it moved and a platypus swam by. After that first little animal encounter we saw two more platypuses! Challenge accomplished! :) It was getting dark and we stopped over at a hostel, were some people had to pay for the tour and then headed back to Cairns. Back in Cairns I got a kebab, made use of free wifi at the travel agents place and then picked up my luggage in order to get the shuttle to the airport. I was the only one in the shuttle and the driver sad I'm crazy because I'm gonna sleep at the airport. Cairns airport is closed at night for approx. 3 hours. Nevertheless I couldn't be bothered paying for another night at the hostel, if I wouldn't even sleep properly and stress out the next morning about getting an airport shuttle. At the airport I wandered around for a bit and met some Estonian girls that would also sleep over there. Talked to them for a bit and joined them in their sleepover spot. There were some sculptures surrounded by artificial lawn which we layed down on. I was pretty tired and actually caught some sleep but gotta admit that it was a bit weird being at an airport when literally no one else was there! It was so quiet! At 3 o'clock we went inside, I charged my stuff and checked in later on. The lady checked my luggage through to Fiji so I wouldn't have to pick it up in Brisbane when transferring from Domestic to International. I grabbed breakfast at Hungry Jacks (Burger King) (cheapest around) and boarded the plane. Everything went well, till I wanted to pick up my luggage in Fiji. It was nowhere to be found. I don't know what it is with Australian airports but they seriously have to improve their baggage sorting system. Second flight in Australia, second time luggage lost. Apparently it's gonna arrive tomorrow midday-ish, but I'm not seeing it come yet. And especially after staying at the airport for a night clean clothes would've been a very well needed treat. At least I could hire a towel from the reception and have a quick shower. I then went to the souvenir shop in the hostel here and got a Fiji souvenir singlet. Awesome. At leat one piece of fresh clothing. Luckily I got a toothbrush in my hand luggage. The hostel here is called Smugglers Cove and is right at the beach. It's not the nicest one ever but oh well. I'm looking forward to Sophie arriving tomorrow and hopefully my luggage being delievered as well. brians
Airlie Beach, Whitsundays, lots of animals and a sparkling finish in Cairns
The night bus to Airlie Beach was pretty nasty.. All seats were taken so not much space to sleep. Still managed to get through the night but definitely not one of the most pleasant experiences over here in Oz. Arriving in Airlie I made my way to the check in office for the Whitsundays cruise I would be going on the same day. Repacked my luggage and stored it and then had some more time to kill as it was only just past 7 and the cruise would only leave at 12:30. Met the 3 other Germans again and hung around with them. Treated myself to a smoothie at New Zealand Natural and then we went shopping at Cotton On. I scored two amazing shorts reduced from 35$ to 5$ each and another shirt for 5$! I know I should save money and have enough clothes but how can you say no to an offer like that?! Packed with even more clothes I walked to the Marina and met the other people who would be boarding the ship with me. After explaining a good couple of things and filling in some forms it was time to leave land and board the vessel. The wings 2 was a pretty new katamaran which about 25 people + crew could sail on. Our crew consisted if three people - the captain, hostess who prepared all the food and so on, and a guy for the entertainment, diving, snorkelling and all the rest. We gathered in the mess where pizza was waiting for us. Had a couple of briefings and then the afternoon was free to chill on the deck. Outside we got another snorkeling and diving briefing. The first day we headed to Luncheon Bay to snorkel/dive. I decided against diving because of money matters and hoping that diving is cheaper in Fiji. The snorkeling was pretty sweet though, the fishies were colorful and the reef with all the corals pretty interesting. I regretted not taking my own wetsuit though as the water wasn't as warm as I hoped it would be and the suits they provided obviously didn't fit.
After we all got out of the water we had some fruit cake and went back to chilling on deck/as it was getting colder some of us moved inside.
A bit later it was snack time again (they wanted to make us fat). The crew prepared two huge as snack platters, with different cracker, cheese, celery and carrot sticks, sour cream and sweet chili sauce dip for us. And as a backpacker you never say no to "free" food.
Dinner time was a bit later and it was buffet-style with garlic bread, caesar salad, potato bake and chicken roast and corn. The food was delicious!!!!
After tea we all got together in the mess and looked at photos of the marine species we have seen and watched video footage of the people who have been for a dive. They also provided dessert for us - chocolate and orange-poppyseed cake.
With the night bus the night before and not getting lots of sleep plus being outside and in the water the whole day I was quite knackered. Went to bed early and get up early the next day.
We woke up to beuatiful sunshine and I actually had a superb uninterrupted sleep. Awesome!
Everyone on our ship hopped into the little speed boat then and we headed to the next beach. We went a bit over a hill to a lookout, overlooking the world famous Whitehaven Beach. This beach is quite special, it's not actually made from sand but from 99% silica. It's recognized as one of the whitest beaches in the world.
The sun was shining and the view was simply amazing. After we took a couple of photos we made our way to the beach and jumped around in the sand, took even more photos, saw some baby sharks and searched for sting rays. We also discovered a whole lot of bright blue colored crabs which migrated as the tide was going out. The scenery was fascinating and breathtaking.
Just before lunch our vessel came to pick us up and everyone tried to get the best place on the deck of the boat as the sun was burning. We had a bit of lunch (bread rolls, egg salad, tuna salad, ham, salami, cheese.... everything!) and then went for another snorkel. That place we could see a big as fish, I'm not sure what it was called, but it was hugeeeee! I've also seen a nemo fish which was awesome!
It was snacks afterwards again and later on it was snorkeling again. We headed back to the place we've been to the first day.
Afterwards it was food again (what else) and we had some biscuits first and Nachos with cheese, salsa, sour cream and sweet chili sauce. We were rewarded with a beautiful sunset and took quite a lot of pictures.
Chilling and chatting some more, we had a good relaxing evening. Dinner was pretty sweet again, with different veggies, rice, beef stir-fry...
Some people got into their drinks after dinner, but I decided not to, as we would need to get out of bed at 6 am the next morning. It wasn't much of a party going on anyway on the boat, everyone was rather in chill-mode than party-mode.
Everyone got together for another slide show and we finished the food bonanza off with rocky road slices and one guy had his birthday, so we had birthday cake as well.
The next morning was also the last morning on the ship, we had the opportunity to snorkel again and then our captain brought us safe to shore. I haven't had a hostel booked yet in Airlie Beach, so I decided to stay at the same that two English girls stayed at. We killed some time before we could check in. The hostel would have been 28$ but on the internet only 21, needless to say I booked online!
The nomads Airlie Beach was super pretty, the dorms were in little huts and the hostel was like a resort with a swimming pool in the middle. The dorms also had an ensuite-bathroom with two showers and a toilet. The other people in our room were super awesome as well. I sorted out my clothes and gave some to the others (who were happy, cause free clothes!) and then I sorted pictures out, uploaded them....
At night it was after party time for all the people from our ship in a bar. We had to be there at 7 - 7.30 ish. Us girls got ready before and played drinking games with our rooms mates. I had a little too much though, made it to the bar but went straight back and eventually was in bed at 8pm. Awesome night haha. When I woke up the next morning I still felt slightly drunk and proceeded to have a bad bad hangover.
After checking out at 10am I had another 10hrs to kill before my bus to Cairns would leave. I took turns chilling at the lagoon, occupying the computers in the local travel shop and wandering around. Eventually I ended up meeting some people and chilled with them, exchanged photos from the cruise and stuff and then I went to get food and ended up getting a pizza at Domino's for 6.95 and met the guys that bought the yellow car off Raphael&friends and had a talk to them. Also my brother saved me, with iMessaging me for quite a while.
Finally my bus came at 8.10pm and I even managed to get two seats to myself. The bus ride was rather boring, but okay. Arriving in Cairns at 5.45am it was more waiting because my hostel wouldn't open before 8am. Finally I got around to dropping my bags off over there and faced the other challenges I had to accomplish. I closed my bank accounts, booked an airport shuttle for sleeping at the airport tomorrow and arranged to someplace to store my luggage, as I can't do it in my hostel because of the weird office hours. After that all done, walking around the cities for like ever, getting something to eat, checking in finally and having a shower, I met up with two girls I knew from the hostel in Noosa. Spent the day chilling with them at the lagoon and then we went shopping for a bit and in the evening we met again to redeem a free meal voucher.
This morning I went on a rainforest tour. I got picked up at 6:55am and hopped on the bus. Our guide for the day would be Shane and he was a really entertaining, enthusiastic guy and informed us very well throughout the day.
After picking everyone up a few of us went to a Wildlife Habitat while others ventured into the town of Port Douglas. I went to the Wildlife Centre and saw lots of interesting species, that actually can all be found in the areas. There were birds, wallabies, kangaroos, crocodiles, turtles... and lots more.
We got picked up again and drove to the Mossman Gorge. There was a little bush walk through the rain forest and we went to a big freshwater river, running through the rainforest. Getting on the bus again we then headed to our lunch stop in the Daintree National Park. The ride was amazing, the lush rain forest surrounded us throughout the journey and we stopped at little creeks and went over a river with a cable ferry, drove through endless sugar cane fields and then at 12:30 arrived at our lunch spot. There's a little hostel up in the rain forest and they also have a cafe. Lunch was included in my package and I got an amazing steak with chips and salad and also a fruit platter. After lunch we made our way to the beach and it's pretty unique - the rain forest meets the Great Barrier Reef at this point called Cape Tribulation Beach.
Getting back on the bus we drove back past a lookout point to the river we crossed by ferry earlier and went on a crocodile cruise. With sunny, humid, warm weather crocs enjoy we were really lucky and spotted a couple big ones. We also had the chance to see two different tree snake species.
After the croco cruise we basically just drove back to Cairns. We arrived back in town at 6pm. Now I'm just hanging out online, writing this. Will grab some food in a minute as I still have amazing 30$ left and this is my last proper evening in Australia. So I'll treat myself to a subway sandwich. Wow. Get excited people!
Tomorrow morning it's an early start again, I get picked up to go on the Uncle Brians waterfall tour at 8am and have to have breakfast before + pack up all my stuff and bring it to the luggage storage place. Busy busy. Tomorrow night it's gonna be sleeping/not sleeping at the airport in Cairns. (unfortunately the airport is closing for 3 hrs at night... well at least it's warm and humid up here in the tropics). On Saturday at 6am I am then off to Fiji where I'll meet my buddy from surfcamp Sophie again. I'm freaking excited to see her again and go explore Fiji with her. Also I'm a bit travelled out so it's gonna be nice to just relax at the beach and do nothing. And to have a travel buddy again will be nice. I met the most amazing and fun people on my way up the coast and I'm really grateful for that, but I can tell you guys - it's hard to be social at all times.
I'll drop another line over here before I leave Australia for good (well I'll stopover in Perth for like 9hrs on the way from Fiji to Bangkok again but that doesn't really count) but I'm not sure about the internet availability in paradise aka Fiji.
Write me on facebook though and tell me how you're all going. Just one more month and I'll meet lots of you people again. Crazy to think about this Australian adventure being over in like 1 day with all its ups and downs. It's been a freaking blast over here and made memories that will last longer than a lifetime.
Till then - love you all x
Castaway!
It's been a busy last week.. I'll start with the Castaway trip. In the morning I went to the office and sorted out on what plane I'm going, paid money.... At 12:45 it was time to leave. Me and two other girls (German) got taken to the airfield. The drive was rather strange because we got taken in a private car by some young lady who even had their kid with her?! Anyways. It all went well and we soon arrived to the landing strip. The other girls and I soon found out that we're all German. Germans everywhere. We got on the plane and our pilot Bruce was really friendly and welcoming. We took off and once in the air the pilot flew some pretty adrenaline-rushing maneuvers. He made a little parabola flight were you freefall for a couple of seconds und did wobbles and crazy curves and just lots of exciting crazy stuff. Of course the nature from above was breathtaking too, not as breathtaking as Bruce's flight skills though. We landed safely on Middle Island and got introduced to the camp supervisors who showed us around. One guy was from Finland and a real dickhead, he only told us what we're not allowed to do and was pretty weird and unfriendly. The other guy was an Australian and I didn't really understand what made him volunteer at the camp as he wasn't the youngest person in the world anymore.. The camp was really basic, but the tents pretty big and matresses comfortable. The toilet though was a bucket or the bush/beach/sea. Very different. In camp we also met the other 6 people who would be "castaway" with us. 9 out of us 9 people were German. Three of the others I already knew from the bus stop in Byron. And one other guy has also been in the bushcamp with me. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and we kind of clicked from the first minute on. After settling into our tents we finished the afternoon off with tanning at the beach and a bit of swimming. I went for a walk along the beach with Pascal and later on the whole group collected firewood for the campfire we would have later on. With the dawn breaking we got the fire started and the camp supervisors prepared a beef stew for us. We sat around the camp fire listened to music, had some drinks and a good as chat. We went to bed around two at night. The next day we got up and it was pouring down. The bad thing was the rain didn't stop at any time of the day. It just kept going, and going, and going. The problem is when you're camping though you can't really do stuff in the rain. Normally you could go kayaking, snorkelling and hiking around the island.. Not for us though. Everyone was a bit sad but what can you do about the weather.. Nothing :( so we just lay in the tents, played card games, watched a movie on the phone, had some food at night and went to sleep early. The departure day was bright sunny again then and there weren't any clouds in the sky.. Our group cleaned the tent up and got picked up by plane again. Bruce, the pilot and also owner of 1770 castaway, was then being super nice and invited our whole group for a lamb roast dinner at his house because we had been so unlucky with the weather and he kind of wanted to make up for it. You could never ever imagine this in Germany, really a nice move and us backpackers thankfully followed the invitation. We flew back to Agnes Water and this time I sat in the front. Bruce flew different thrilling maneuvers again and I for a short time I was allowed to steer the plane! Back on the ground I picked up my stored luggage and had a shower which was really damn nice after 2 nights in rain and dirt. I treated myself to a chicken kebab - sometimes you just need that kind of stuff and then went to the beach where I met the English blokes from my bushcamp and later on the girls from my trip. Just before 5 I made my way back to the hostel, got my luggage and went to the meeting point where Bruce would pick us up. Only 6 of us could make it to the dinner, the others had to leave Agnes Water earlier. The pilot drove us to his home which is a beautiful terrace-like house up on a hill overlooking the Noosa headland, and the ocean. The view was freaking amazing. Bruce is also brewing his own beer and after shouting us all one round he just told us to help ourselves. Freaking awesome. We talked about life and what Bruce has been doing in his life turns out he was a backpacker himself, except that he took his plane to Canada and America instead if going on buses and such. Freaking awesome dude. We had a couple more beers, watched the sun go down and later on it was time for lamb roast. The meat was beautifully lean and so yum. We also had baked potatoes and sweet potatoes, corn, peas and homemade gravy. It simply was the best ever meal. Me and the other 3 Germans had to catch the night bus to Airlie Beach the same night, so Bruce drove us to the bus station and we all thanked him for his very welcoming hospitality. water # australia
Fraser Island
I arrived to Rainbow Beach and as I got into my dorm over there I got to know the first girl who would be in my group the next day although I missed the briefing, because of arriving late. I settled in, did some laundry and surfed a bit on the internet before I would meet the other people in my group to go alcohol shopping. Everyone was really friendly from the first second on! Back in the hostel me and the other girl from my group spend the evening talking about life with another girl in our room. And we packed up some stuff as you could only take a small backpack with you on the Island. It's been a good chill evening :) On Saturday morning all the people arriving late had to watch a security briefing video. Afterwards we got our stuff together, checked the supplied food and packed up the car. For the first day we were in the Lead Car with out group leader Micky. The 4 WD was a bit different to the others, 10 persons could fit in and it was designed lile a trooper car. This car also had a trailer, that would hold all the food of the 4 different groups. I was a bit dissappointed, as you're not allowed to drive the lead car yourself, but all the others are self-driven. We drove to the Island and crossed the Strait on a ferry. Engaging 4 WD we drove on sand tracks across lush rainforests and sandy beaches. The first day was quite a long day of driving but we also visited Lake MacKenzie, a lake filled with rainwater and beautiful colors. It was raining in the morning but just as we arrived to the lake the sky cleared up and it was bright sunny. A bit after it showered again though. Afterwards we drove to the campsite we stayed at. It was a camp on Aboriginal Ground, the company operating the tour got kicked out of all other beach campgrounds on the Island as normally there's a 9 pm noise curfew that backpackers weren't exactly sticking to.. There were tents set up and there were a couple different communal areas. Each night over a 120 people stayed there. The only rules in that camp where to not spit into fire (Aborigonal Gods live there or something) and whistle (irritating the birds in Abo belief). After rolling out our sleeping mats the crew began cooking a rice stir-fry. Cooking was pretty hectic but the food turned out yum. After dinner we had a couple of drinks and a look aroud the other communal areas and the camp disco. I met a girl from surf camp, another one from Noosa who won the wet t shirt contest over there, and two guys from the bushcamp. Had a couple of drinks with them and went to bed a little later. It was scrambled eggs for breakfast and it turned out we could move into another car that we were actually allowed to drive ourselves. I was the first one driving and it was lots of fun. The others were a bit scared of me driving though I think... We stopped at the Maheno ship wreck for pictures. The Maheno was a steam ship, used for transporting passengers across the Tasman Sea and in the WW1 as a hospital ship. With technics improving the ship was sold the a Japanese company. They wanted to tow the ship into Sydney Harbour, but the towing boat engines failed so the ship was drifting towards shore and found it's stop on Fraser Island. And that's where the wreck still is today. Afterwards we drove to Eli Creek, a freshwater stream you could float on. It wasn't sunny though and I caught a cold in bushcamp so I decided to leave the bikini in the car and have a rest on the sand. After Eli Creek we were off to lunch. We had toast sandwiches the day before and now it was wraps. After lunch the sky cleared up and we drove to Indian Head. On the way we stopped over at the pinnacles, kind of like cliffs of dark brown/orange/yellow. When James Cook sailed past The headland he saw a bunch of Aboriginees standing there, assuming they were Indians though he called the headland Indian Head. The view from the cliffs up there is stunning! The last stop for the day where the Champagne Pools. These are rock pools and ocean water washes into them, creating bubbles in clear blue water. As the weather was beautiful and the scenery incredible I decided to go for a quick swim. It was the most amazing part of the trip! Afterwards we headed back to camp and had potatoes and steak for dinner. At night my group decided to go to the beach and look at the stars. The sky looked amazing and I managed to take a couple cool photos. I went to bed early, driving all day is exhausting. The last day on Fraser Island we drove to Lake Wabby a freshwater lake which is connected to a massive sand blow. We walked there for about 30 mins through the rain forest and then lay on the sand and went for a swim. After lunch we headed back to the ferry and arrived at the hostel a bit later. While driving onto the ferry the girl driving our car slightly bumped into a convexity. Luckily nothing happened though. At the hostel we unpacked the car, got new rooms and all took a very well earned shower after 3 days of camping and only being able to wash with rather earth-coloured water. After we all had dinner we got a free jug of cider and had a drink. A couple people were keen on going out and party, I can't really be bothered that much to party over here anymore though, so together with some other girls I watched a movie. I don't know what it is but going out over here is so different from back home, and it kind of partied itself out for me. Yesterday morning my group had breakfast together and we ate up what was left over from the tour. I still had some time to kill so I went to town and went online for a bit. On the bus I talked to a girl, who was going to school with someone in my group and them two have met by accident in the hostel kitchen the day before. She was lovely and we had a good chat. In the evening we got to the hostel in Agnes Water/1770. Got our rooms sorted, I had a shower and packed my stuff for the Castaway trip I'm going on today. Later I called Raphael and we talked for nearly 4hrs on the phone. Today I'm off to the Castaway trip. A group of 15 people is flown to an island and then it's camping there for two nights. Hope it's fun and fun people are with me :) Another cool thing that happened yesterday is, I found a camera in the free food shelf. It had a note on it "display broken but still takes good photos". It's a Sony Cybershot 16.1 mp point-and-shoot camera and it's really handy as I only have my big camera otherwise. I'll be back on Friday from the Castaway and then take the night bus up to Airlie beach and do my Whitsundays cruise on Saturday. Got only 1.5 weeks left in Australia now and then it's time for Fiji! island
In the bush..
Bushcamp! Arriving to the bush camp in the morning we checked the surroundings out first. Me and another French guy were the only people that arrived with the morning bus. The bushcamp was attached to a camping ground with mostly permanent campers and had some normal dome tents as well as some army style tents with some kind of dorm beds/hammocks in them. The first night we stayed in the dorms. We put our bags in the dorms, had some food, before me and the French guy decided to go for a walk around the bush as there was nothing else to do. The bush wasn't terribly exciting, just forest, grass, birds. When we came back I started talking to another English girl who had completed the canoe tour already and just stayed for another two nights. Together with her we went for another walk to an old quarry. On a bright sunny day you can swim there, as rainwater filled up the actual quarry and now there are more like a couple of lakes, but unfortunately it wasn't bright warm sunny, so we didn't. Coming back to the camp a couple more people arrived and some others came back from their day canoeing. All the people in the camp were super friendly (except for the staff, they were a bit rude) and it reminded me a little bit of surf camp. After dinner me and some group that had their last day in the camp played some drinking games and I also met some nice Germans I had a good little chat with and it was a really really cool day, although nothing much exciting happened. Just got my self-esteem up a bit after feeling a bit lost in Noosa. The next morning I made myself breakfast and also prepared lunch I could eat while we were canoeing. Unfortunately it poured down and the weather was just crap. Nevertheless we got a short little briefing and met our group (about 10 people, 4 English, 2 French, 2 Dutch, 1 Australian, me). It was a self-guided trip, which means we just got explained where to go and then we went off by ourselves. We canoed up the river, stopped over at a rope swing, went across a lake, had lunch over there and went back against the current and wind just past lunch time. In total it was a 16km trip and no need to say that we were all properly exhausted. The canoeing tour wasn't that much fun though as it was raining all day and windy and we didn't even see much wildlife. In the afternoon we crashed in front of the tv, and I had a little nap. Went to bed pretty early. As it was the second night we would sleep in tents which was fine to me. The next day it was sunny which put our mood up. We would canoe to another lake and then go for a walk to the North Shore Beach. That canoe day was shorter in distance and just heaps more fun because of the weather that had improved heaps. We had the chance to chill a bit in the sun on the beach and our group grew together a bit as we were walking and talking. On the way back we even saw a kangaroo hopping past. Back in camp it was shower time, before I had some more lunch (instant noodle soup). I played a couple of games of pool with some Frenchies, talked to some new English blokes and some German guys, who have just arrived and topped the evening off with a sweet conversation with some English people who travelled through South East Asia for 3 months and gave me loads of travel advice, showed off some pictures and had lots of funny stories to tell. Another night's sleep in the tent later I'm now off to Rainbow Beach to go on my Fraser Island Safari tomorrow. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and you can drive around with 4WD's and camp and swim in lakes and all kinds of cool stuff like that. My friends who have done the tour already said it's one of the best tours in Oz but you have to be lucky with the group you're going with. So what I do now is hope that my group is awesome and that the weather will improve a bit more :)
Brisbane! Noosa!
Arriving in Brisbane from Surfers Paradise my old friend Chloe picked me up from the bus stop. It was freaking awesome to see her again after like a year! We got some food before we made our way to her house which is approx. 1 hour by train away from the city centre. She's living in a suburb/extra town called Cleveland. It's a really nice neighbourhood and there's a river with boat houses and yachts and a small harbour running right next to where Chloe's living. Chloe's house is in a gated community and they have a swimming pool in the estate. It was so nice to be back in a real house and in a family environment. I even had my own room with a proper double bed! On Saturday Chloe's family was over because it was her Dad's brithday the next day. They were all really friendy and it was a nice chill evening. We went out to a fish cafe restaurant thing. I had chips and Greek Salad but even tried Calamari rings after like 15 years of not eating any seafood! Later on we had some amazing chocolate strawberry cream birthday cake :) We went back to the house and I spent the evening playing with Chloe's little cousin. Reminded me of my brother :) On Sunday we drove to a hilltop and saw Brisbane from above before we made our way into the city. Brisbane is quite pretty, but just another city.. There was a festival on though that celebrated Buddha's birthday. They had markets and lots of street food stalls. We got some food sat down by the river and then walked off to the main street and had a look thorugh the shops. Late afternoon we caught the train back home. Chloe's mum prepared a Roast Lamb dinner, cause it was Sunday. In the evening we just sat by the Tv and watched a show and it was just incredibly nice cause it had such a 'home-y' feel to it. At night I skyped my parents and Mum got excited cause she used Skype for the first time in life! What a progress! The next morning I woke up early, Chloe had to go to uni and I caught the train to the Transit Centre with her. I was at the bus stop an hour early then but it wasn't too bad waiting around. The next stop was Noosa. I wanted to book a hostel called Dolphin Beachhouse on Sunshine Beach which Julia recommended staying at and it was available on Sunday morning when I checked hostels online but not at night when I wanted to book it. So I ended up staying at Nomads Noosa. I stayed in a 16 bed dorm which wasn't that nice, but the weirdest thing was, that when I arrived no one was there! Additionally the Nomads has a rather lousy kitchen, you even have to hire cutlery and crockery, and no real common area inside (it was raining) except for the bar which is only busy at night though. So I had no one to talk to or do something with and I got sad. That's the times when I wish that I had a travel partner and wasn't travelling by myself. Anyways. I went into Noosa town and wasn't too excited about it, just another town. I wandered over the hill to the beach then and that looked much nicer. I walked on a couple of tracks through the National Park although it was pouring down with rain. Took some nice photos though so that was worth it! Walked back to the hostel and some people were there - I got excited but they decided to go to sleep instead of talking to me. Sad. In the evening everyone got more social though and as always - alcohol was the key to meeting people. We played drinking games and had a chat and I got to know the others better. At 8 there was free pizza in the bar so we all went together and it bonded people quite a lot. Actually you could only get 2 slices , bur after everyone had gone through we just queued up again and got 2 more. So basically half a pizza for free! There was also free punsch which was nice. At night they had some games competitions on and a wet tshirt contest. The evening was quite funny and a girl from our room won the wet tshirt contest and used her 100$ won to shout us a drink each. Unfortunately the bar at nomads closed at midnight, but there was an Irish pub around the corner a couple girls and I were off to. With the afternoon being quite shit and lonely, the evening actually turned out quite well and I met some lovely girls. This morning I left Noosa to go the bushcamp. The bushcamp is associated with a camping ground next to the Noosa River. Everything's quite basic but the people over here are nice and it's not as packed as a hostel, there are maybe 20-30 people here so you have the chance to actually meet people and talk to them. Another plus is that most of the people staying here are lone travellers or if not that they're very friendly and interested in talkong to others and you don't feel like you're annoying anyone with talking to them. It's quite chill and quiet as well. Tomorrow and the day after we're doing a canoeing tour on the Noosa River. More then :)

Surfers Paradise
Today is the last night in Surfers Paradise. Surfers Paradise is a suburb of the City of Gold Coast. It's basically a really new city with skyscrapers and a long beach. The city itself is pretty boring and you can't do anything else than lay on the beach (if the weather permits) or go out at night. It's packed with night clubs and basically Australia's most famous city to party at. Arriving to Surfers I met my old school friend Julia and her travel buddy Demet. We checked into our hostel and were pleasantly surprised! Booking a 8 bed dorm we now got a 4 bed room which is outfitted like an appartement with own kitchen, living room and bathroom. The hostel also has a pool. We made ourselves comfortable in our room and went to the beach. We chilled for a bit and caught up on life as me and Julia haven't seen each other for over 6 months! It was awesome to see an old friend again and share stories. Later on we've been grocery shopping and then went home to cook and get ready for the night. I heard about a card you can pick up in different locations in surfers that gives you free entry to most of the clubs. Additionally we got a wristband from one of the clubs that allowed us to get free drinks till 11pm. We had pre-drinks in our appartement and chilled a bit with Undine, a girl I knew from the surfcamp. We then hit the clubs and partied the night away. As we couldn't wait to get clubbing before and were in a real party mood we enjoyed the evening quite quite a lot! The free drinks at Club Liv tasted well, the music in SinCity was fun and just an awesome night out! Yesterday we slept in and chilled for a bit in our appartement before we went back to the beach. Unfortunately it was quite windy and cloudy so we left after a while. Being hungry we walked home and came across a Vapiano lunch special where you get 10$ pizza and pasta. We made use of it and ate a pizza bianco, a pizza with garlic cream, potatoes and rosemarine. It was freaking yummy! For dinner we made a real 3 course menu with cottage cheese-stuffed mushrooms, a potato bake and chocolate bavarian cake :D Thursday is Ladies Night in Surfers which meant we got free drinks in the clubs again. First we went to SinCity to get some cocktails before we left for "Vanity", a night club with a powder room where there's a stylist girls can get their hair curled or straightened while in the club. We had some more drinks and then mixed with the others. Unfortunately the people in that club weren't as cool and pretty sluty and the girls really into getting with guys and the guys were all touchy as well, so we decided to leave and head home. The night wasn't as cool as the first one but still alright. Today we were strolling around town and checked out a couple of the shops - just a typical girls day. Tonight we're not sure yet if we should go out or have a night in, oh well, we'll get around to something :) Tomorrow I'm off to Brisbane to meet Chloe which I'm freaking excited about yeeew! :)
On the road again!
Left surf camp yesterday to begin travelling up the coast! Been in Byron Bay for the night and now off to Surfers Paradise to meet Julia :) The last week in surf camp was pretty cool. Last Monday we had my favourite teacher Linton for the first time again and I went back to surfing a hardboard. The surf was incredibly awesome and set me in the right mood for the week :) Sophie and I also went for a surf in the afternoon, but there were hardly any waves so we just had a chat with some locals in the water. In the evening lots of people got drunk, I couldn't be bothered drinking though, as I wanted to make the most out of my surfing in the last week. Sophie and I watched one of my favourite animation movies "Surfs Up" and had a chill evening. Tuesday was basically the same as Monday, just surfing, theory in the afternoon and a movie in the evening, nothing too exciting. Wednesday morning we were surfing with Jimmy and went over to Mullawarra beach. The waves were epic and had just the right size and it was sunny and pretty magic. We went surfing at 7 in the morning and saw an amazing sunset! During that surf I basically caught my best wave to this day. I managed to stand up just the right moment and then turned left, rode down the face of the wave and just before it closed out I made a slight right turn and then surfed all the way to the beach. I felt a million dollars. In the afternoon a couple of Academy people went back to playing goon pong and getting wasted before dinner. Being fed up with that lifestyle of drinking just for the sake of having something to do, I escaped to the beach. Sophie joined me and we had a long as nearly two hour long beach walk. On Thursday it was Anzac day, which is a public holiday in Australia and New Zealand to remember the troops that left their live in world war I or just all the people who last their lives in war in general. It is celebrated with memorial marches and a lot of beers in the pub. We went surfing in the morning and headed of to Woolgoolga main beach. Linton made a video of us surfing we'd analyze later that day in our theory lesson. After lunch a lot of people went to the pub but I fancied going to Coffs Harbour more. We went to the mall and got a couple things before we were back at the surf camp just in time for theory. On Friday the surf was basically flat but it was cool to chill in the water anyway :) I have no idea why, but although it was the Mojosurf Festival the next day we all started having a few drinks in the evening and it turned out to be an awesome night. We played a couple of fun drinking games and chatted to a lot of people and when we decided to go to bed suddenly we had a pyjama party going on! Awesome memories :) Saturday was festival day. They set up a big tipi stage and the motto was hawaiian tropics. Before the festival action hit off we went for a surf in the morning only to see that it was still flat as the Baltic Sea. I decided to try out the Underwater camera I bought a couple weeks ago. It was a hell lot of fun but it turned out the camera wasn't as waterproof as advertised.. So it took a rice bath straight after. After lunch we dressed up hawaiian. I made a grass skirt out of party streamers and was quite proud of the result :D A couple DJs were playing first and we were just chilling on couches in the sun. My travel agent friend Izzy came to camp a little later and I enjoyed a couple of drinks with her and some people she knew from Byron or somewhere. They shouted me vodka mix drinks and were all super friendly and chatty and the evening hit off pretty well :) In the dinner queue I chatted with a 84-year old guy he's a real surf legend in the area. He was one of the first dudes in the Coffs Region to surf and is coming to every Mojosurf Festival. After dinner different bands were playing and everyone was in a good mood and then there was a fire show and it was just a whole lot of fun! Jakob organised a huge breakfast for all of us academy kids on Sunday morning. We went to the camp kitchen and cooked up 2kg of bacon and 24 eggs. Best hangover breakfast ever! For the rest of the day we chilled in the sun, watched a movie and enjoyed a lazy day. This monday was my last full day in Spot X. I kicked it off with an awesome morning surf and beautiful waves. In the afternoon we went out again and Izzy and her boyfriend joined us for a bit of time. Cecilie took some photos of us and it was a bloody funny afternoon :) some new academy people arrived as well, they seemed pretty fun and friendly. I had a huge last proper lunch with loads of Nachos and Chili con carne. After dinner we had some chilled drinks and celebrated life a little. Tuesday was leaving day for me. The last surf in the morning didn't go well at all, because we haven't had enough hard boards to use and I couldn't arrange with a foamie and got annoyed and wasn't in the mood for surfing anymore. I went out of the water earlier, hung up my stuff to dry and had a shower. While in the bathroom Izzy surprised me with a cute little goodbye present. She got me a cool as bag and a travel diary :) I didn't expect it at all and was proper surprised and awwwww just too cute and lovely :3 thanks so much izzy <3 Making the most of free meals I enjoyed a more than massive lunch before I packed up all my stuff. At the beach there were some games going on and a bit of a beach party. People celebrated Queens Bday, a public holiday in the Netherlands were all the Dutchies go crazy. A bit later it was time to leave. I said my goodbyes to everyone and was off to Byron. In Byron I checked into my hostel. It was quite clean and nice, my roommates were friendly and invited me to come drink with them. I didn't feel like drinking again though and was quite tired from the day and bus ride. I decided to stay in and just talked to Raphael for a bit before I went to bed. This morning I went to the Greyhound bus stop in Byron, as I wanted to board the bus my name wasn't on the list of passengers. I checked my ticket and - I booked the bus for the day after. Initially I wanted to stay in Byron Bay for two nights and booked the bus that way and didn't check the booking date again, only the times. Australians being nice though the bus driver called someone to change my booking and I could get on the bus anyway :D lucky! :D It feels kind of good to be travelling again and I'm really excited to see all the different places. On the other side it's also a bit scary to be on my own again, without a group or without my boyfriend. I really really hope to meet some cool people in the hostels or during my tours.. Otherwise I'll be forever alone. :( Keep your fingers crossed for me! x Other than that I have a second offer for a hotelmanagement course and will be trialing the week after I'm home. It's cool to kind of have the security of having two possible places to study at and eventually maybe the freedom to choose. Hope it goes well. Enjoy your day off today guys back home! xxx academy # travel
