𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀 was an appreciated change of pace . it lacked the mire of 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝗿𝗸 — the layer of characteristic scum that afforded it its identity . even if that identity was malignant . cancerous . metropolis was sterile , in that respect . suffocated beneath a the “ protective ” whims of its 𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗟 .
it was good to see the ravaged place had been rebuilt , after seeing it suffer so thoroughly . metropolis ’ branch of my enterprises had little character , at first , when it was little more than its intricate foundations , which lacked the 𝚒𝚍𝚒𝚘𝚜𝚢𝚗𝚌𝚛𝚊𝚜𝚒𝚎𝚜 that helped it feel like mine . like it belonged to me . even then , they circled like vultures — eager to pick apart my prerogative . eager to know how i could save them .
“ the initiative is in its preliminary stages , ” i spieled , the mass of tabloids huddling around me like starved animals , “ but we’re hoping to have built at least three more shelters by august . food banks are our top priority , at the moment . ” i could feel my face smiling . “ our teams are doing all they can . ” i assumed by their awe - stricken faces that they’d scrounged enough , that they’d fished for and caught enough content to paste in black and white , onto their veneer pages . that was until i saw , as the rabble dissipated , the daily planet ’ s lois lane remained in the moving wake . “ are you all right , miss ? ” she seemed sharp . capable of invoking pain . i’d thought of her as one of them , at first . eager to please and puff . eager to get her spread . at first . before i conducted due research . “ can i get you a drink of something ? ”
