I seem to have gained a lot of followers recently, so here's some info:

- I'm OLD. If interacting with a 50yo cis female in fandom squicks you out, fine - it won't hurt my feelings if you unfollow.

- I don't tag 99% of my posts. That said, I don't usually reblog triggery stuff (jump scares, gore, etc) because I don't like seeing it.

- I reblog stuff I like. I do not curate my feed, aside from Tumblr memes that are date-related.

- No TERFs, no bigots, no racists, no cults - no exceptions.

- Sexwork is work, and it's not inherently more exploitative than any other job.

Tonight I made a yellow cake with chocolate icing. It was my birthday, and I like making this cake; it’s the same kind of cake my mom would make every year for me as a kid. It’s easy, just boxed mix and canned icing. It’s comfort, nostalgia, but it never quite tasted the same.

Well tonight I made a few changes based off of a recipe I had seen going around, and wouldn’t you know it, the cake came out tasting exactly like my momma’s. So much so that it brought tears to my eyes when I took the first bite. There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t miss her, and the longer she’s gone the sweeter the feeling is when I find her memory again.

In honor of that, here’s what I did:

Preheat oven to 315 Fahrenheit (yes. I know that’s low. Trust me) while you’re preparing the ingredients.

Of course it helps if your wet ingredients are at room temperature, but if they aren’t you’ll live.

Using a yellow cake mix (we use Duncan Hines), ignore the ingredients list on the back and use

4 eggs

1 stick of melted butter

1 cup of milk

splash of vanilla extract.

Mix as normal. Pour into a 9x11 baking pan. Bake at 315 for about 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Let cake cool completely. When cooled, melt chocolate icing in microwave at 15 second intervals until pourable (not hot, just enough to pour over cake). Pour can over cake and use a knife to spread evenly. Pop it in the fridge for at least 20 minutes.

As some of you might recall from this essay, I spent the latter half of 2025 working on a comic for the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah, Georgia. Tania Sammons, a curator at the museum who had previously licensed my guide to sailors’ tattoos for a show, wrote to me with an irresistible pitch: four cartoonists would be hired, assigned a vessel from the museum's extensive collection of models, then given six months to produce a short comic for publication in an anthology alongside an accompanying museum display.

How could I say no?

My original brief was to research the Anne, the ship that brought the first colonists to Georgia, but in the aftermath of my dad's death the story took off in directions I couldn't have foreseen.

I'm releasing the whole comic online to coincide with the opening of Drawn to the Sea, the exhibition in Savannah. If you're in the area this week (or anytime over the next nine months!) you can stop in and see all the amazing work that came from myself and fellow artists Avery Hick, Rich King, and Sharon Norwood. Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated. in case you didn't know it, this is also related to how cyclosporiasis spreads. when farm workers are not given adequate bathroom breaks or access to restrooms, they have no choice but to relieve themselves directly into the fields, especially if they are already suffering from diarrheal disease and have been made to work while sick. the pathogen ends up in irrigation ditches and, eventially, all over your food. this is why human rights like sanitation need to be available to everyone in order to be effective for anyone.

their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.

kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.

their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.

big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!

(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)

They look like one of the downsides of emerging from an egg fully formed is how aware you are off just having come out on egg. First minute alive, already dealing with some fucking experience.

y'okay can we stop pretending yet. like can we all acknowledge that eating disorders are chic again, and it's going to kill someone.

and like. do we have to keep gently phrasing things to protect naturally-thin people's feelings. in my life it has never been fashionable to be fat. "fat" is still a bad word. there has never been institutional power pushing people to gain weight; no trillion-dollar industry to "fix" skinny people. a larger body type has never been over-represented in models, influencers, celebrities. sure, people might say "i'm worried for your health," but they do it with respect and gentleness, like they're talking to a scared deer.

every single fucking time i talk about this, i have to be so careful with what i say, in case i offend even one skinny person. it is just true that skinny people have social capital across many cultures. there is a reason you almost never hear someone say "i wish i was fat," but you will constantly see people say "I wish i was thin." and yet inevitably some skinny person will tell me: i thought you wanted body positivity. it is the same fucking attitude as when a cis man says "when you say men have power, well, i've been bullied for being a man. i thought you believe in mental health awareness. don't you know men have a higher suicide rate?"

two things can be true at once: your experience being bullied for being thin was terrible. and people with larger bodies probably have it worse.

i have been big and small. i know many other people who have been big and small. trust what i'm about to tell you: being small is much easier. the world is kinder to you. people treat you better. honestly, this pattern occurs pretty much regardless of gender - my guy friends have confided that they'd rather be bullied for being thin than be bullied for being fat. if you're skinny, the pressure might be to gain weight, sure, but it's often to do so in a way that keeps you skinny - to gain muscle, specifically.

thinness is seen as innate and natural, genetic. whereas carrying any fat - that is a moral failing. it is assumed to be related to your character, your personality. i have seen people equate it to discipline, to hygiene. that bias is why we need to talk about this.

of course i want nobody to make a comment about anyone's bodies. and i think that hyper-thinness and an obsession with weight loss and a recession and a rise of conservative values... all of this is very fucking concerning. we are watching a return of "pro-ana" content, reframed as choice feminism, "health-conscious" behavior, "looksmaxxing". it's fucking terrifying.

That's gorgeous!! It looks handmade based on the strap end not being symmetrical. What an amazing and super cool find

The cracks don't look too bad so just conditioning it well and keeping it conditioned should be all you need to manage them. Basically cracks occur when the leather dries out so as long as it stays oiled/hydrated/conditioned they're unlikely to get worse.

If you plan to clean it at all using saddle soap or something similar make sure you condition the ever loving shit out of it after because that stuff can really dry out the leather.

The strap is the most craggly, I'm considering already how to repace it when the time comes because I doubt a backing would allow for easy resizing

A new strap would be one option. Another would be to add a very thin backing (I've got some deer leather that would work well) glued to it, or a thicker backing and change the sizing pieces.

Ahh simple rivet! The only downside is that it can be hard to remove the old rivet without causing any damage but if the rivets are still holding tight then if you leave a length of the old strap on place you can sew the new strap to it. You could also leave the old rivet in place and cut back most of the old strap and add a second rivet above the old one to secure the new strap.

How wide is the old strap? And what would be the width and the length you'd like a new one to be? A tri-glide buckle would likely be the best option for changing the length without it slipping loose.

There's no such thing as debt in community! It'll either come back to me directly in trade for services or indirectly if it's paid forward. Seriously though because I buy leather by the double shoulder or side the amount of material needed for a strap like that would cost me less than $5 (leather can actually be surprisingly cheap if you buy from small local businesses). Just consider it payback for the nice things I know you do for people all the time 😉

The current strap I estimate being about 1 1/2cm but I've been dreaming about a strap that also comes with like a spindle holster so I think that means it ahould be wider? So like 3-4 inches maybe?

The mechanics of said spindle holder are what gave me pause in response time as I've been rotating concepts in my mind; this is not a New Problem for me as I've been considering it for ages, I have many spindle shapes and the yarn builds up in different ways on each spindle so my various solutions come with fresh issues.

I can easily slide an empty spindle into a set of vertical snake-bite holes for instance but once I've spun for a while things chage shape quite a bit:

Anyways, I digress; I would be more inclined to mail the pouch out to you for your Expert Opinion and so you can look at the pretty thing in person and make an executive decision on the best course of action for strap replacing and riveting and such.
