Drew Brees tells Robin Roberts New Orleans ‘saved me as a person’ after Katrina

As the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is just days away, you will see many tell their stories and recall memories, while others focus on the recovery process.

In 2006, the return of the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome with new coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees played a major role in revitalizing the devastated city and helping the recovery efforts.

Brees recently spoke to ABC’s Robin Roberts about New Orleans saving his career, Katrina and what it was like winning the Super Bowl in 2009 for the city.

“There were so many emotional moments along the way, just because we knew this was about an overall recovery; an overall resurrection of this city, of this community, of a spirit,” Brees said. “I needed somebody to believe in me just as much as New Orleans needed someone to believe in them. In so many ways, New Orleans not only saved my football career, but for me as a person.”

Brees also said he keeps the visions and memories of Katrina in his mind while playing in the ‘Dome because it helps him remember that he’s playing for more than just winning a football game.

“I’m very proud of how far New Orleans has come over the last 10 years. I would say that not only has New Orleans come back, it’s come back stronger in so many ways,” he said.

Brees added: “One of the best things I’ve ever heard when we first got to New Orleans, somebody said: 'If you love New Orleans, it’ll love you back.’ And there is no truer statement.”
