Merging my passions for both art and yoga, I created Painted Yoga®️ to inspire creativity and encourage others to express and rediscover themselves through art and mindful movements. One of a kind canvas paintings are created using the body and the practice of yoga as art media. The idea of combining yoga and painting first came one summer couple of years ago, while I was watching my boys paint on huge watercolor papers. I was recovering from an injury and couldn’t move my right leg as much. I would give the kids things to do that doesn’t require going somewhere to keep them busy. As toddlers then, they had fun stepping all over the painted papers - a pure expression of their creativity. The idea at first seemed absurd to many and it took perseverance and a strong belief in it to make it happen. One of my mentors @catherineaashton was among the first to support it. It was at the same time we were brainstorming about her bringing Yoga to Transform Trauma to the world. @younique_yoga_indiana embraced it and opened its doors to my first ever Painted Yoga Workshop. I’ll be forever grateful to them. Fast forward to now, I have led thousands of yogis (from 5 to 82 y.o.) in their creative expression and journey across the states. One question I often get is if I do paint when I teach. I always do! I dive right in alongside each person to show them that for the next two hours, it’s okay to be messy. It’s okay to fully let go, to enjoy the process, be messy and create a beautiful ‘mess-terpiece’. We use a patent-pending canvas specifically made for Painted Yoga practice to ensure safety while we move with wet paints. It’s easy to limit ourselves from our potentials out of fear. It’s better to try and fail than regret not trying the very thing that could have lead you to your dreams. Everyday, I’m in the forefront seat of witnessing how our kids are navigating their growing up years. I heard myself uttering these words today while affirming them that it’s totally okay to be scared of trying out new things or doing something out of their comfort zones. I pray that these seeds of encouragement will take roots and continue to grow inside their hearts even long after I’m gone. I told them I lost count as to how many times I’ve failed in this life, but I can recall most of the lessons, wisdom, courage and love that came out of each of those ‘failures’. In the end, each one turned out to be blessings in disguise that I wouldn’t trade for any ‘wins’ in this world. Ready to embark on a journey of breaking through fears? Trusting ourselves is a free choice we must make thousands of times daily. The more we choose to trust ourselves, the easier it becomes, just like our yoga practice. The use of yoga wheel is becoming popular not only for yoga practice but also as a tool for physical therapy and sports rehabilitation programs. Don't let the mundane things rob you of the beauty from the normal and ordinary. Dig in and find the gems from the usual. 🔸🔶🔸I was reading Dharma Mittra's Asanas book after teaching the other day and was suddenly inspired to work on opening my back. Backbends aren't easy for me, not at all, especially with Taekwondo where hips, legs and back get tight from numerous repetitive kicks (this clip is sped up 3x). But I'm digging in and celebrating moments and little gems in my practice. We ought to do that more - celebrate little things. #practice #celebrate (at Yoga360)
