The lotus flower is a beautiful flower that can be found all over the world. But at first the lotus is surrounded by mud and muck and by fish, by insects, and simply dirty, rough conditions Despite these conditions, the lotus flower maintains strength, and pushes aside each of these dirty obstacles as it makes its way to clearer surfaces. At this time, the lotus is still just a stem with only a few leaves, and a small flower pod.
But in time, the stem continues to grow, and the pod slowly surfaces above the water, into the clean air, finally freeing itself from the harsh life conditions below. It is then that the lotus slowly opens each beautiful petal to the sun, basking in the worldly beauty surrounding it. The lotus flower is ready to take on the world. Despite being born into dark, murky conditions, where hope for such beautiful life seems dubious, the lotus grows, rises above adversity. Ironically, this same dirty water washes it clean as it surfaces. As the lotus opens each petal to the air, not a stain or spot of mud remains externally. The inner lotus too, has never seen a drop of mud or dirty water. It is pure, and bright, and beautiful.
In Buddhism, the bud of the lotus symbolizes potential. The lotus flower represents an awakening, spiritual growth, and enlightenment. Just as the lotus flower emerges from the water clean, the lotus also represents purity of body, speech, and mind. The lotus could be thought of as an awakened mind, which grows naturally toward the warmth and light of truth, love and compassion. The lotus may appear fragile on the surface, but it is flexible and strong, securely anchored under the surface of the water. (Source)
Not one of those photos are of lotus flowers. Those are all waterlilies members of the Nymphaeaceae family.
These are lotus flowers aka Nelumbo nucifera . Notice how different the centers are, those yellow conical things in the middle become the characteristic seedpods of the lotus. I understand the mistake because it’s all over google image.

Ridiculous yet effective ways to deal with Executive Dysfunction
Dealing with executive dysfunction and ADHD becomes so much easier when you stop trying to do things the way you feel like you should be able to do them (like everyone else) and start finding ways that actually work for you, no matter how “silly” or “unnecessary” they seem.
For years my floor was constantly covered in laundry. Clean laundry got mixed in with dirty and I had to wash things twice, just making more work for myself. Now I just have 3 laundry bins: dirty (wash it later), clean (put it away later), and mystery (figure it out later). Sure, theoretically I could sort my clothes into dirty or clean as soon as I take them off and put them away straight out of the dryer, but realistically that’s never going to be a sustainable strategy for me.
How many garbage bins do you need in a bedroom? One? WRONG! The correct answer is one within arms reach at all times. Which for me is three. Because am I really going to get up to blow my nose when I’m hyperfocusing? NO. In allergy season I even have an empty kleenex box for “used tissues I can use again.” Kinda gross? Yeah. But less gross than a snowy winter landscape of dusty germs on my desk.
I used to be late all the time because I couldn’t find my house key. But it costs $2.50 and 3 minutes to copy a key, so now there’s one in my backpack, my purse, my gym bag, my wallet, my desk, and hanging on my door. Problem solved.
I’m like a ninja for getting pout the door past reminder notes without noticing. If I really don’t want to forget something, I make a physical barrier in front of my door. A sticky note is a lot easier to walk past than a two foot high cardboard box with my wallet on top of it.
Executive dysfunction is always going to cause challenges, but often half the struggle is trying to cope by pretending not to have executive dysfunction, instead of finding actual solutions.
i left cabinet doors open all my life and couldn’t make myself stop leaving them open until i figured out my subconscious just wants to know where everything is at a glance. i put labels on each cabinet door for what was behind the cabinet and after that i was a lot better at closing them.
showers are hard for me because they involve a lot of steps to get in and out. buying cleaning hand wipes helps me stay a lot cleaner and happier when i’m too tired or distracted to make myself be a normal person– they’re faster and involve way less prep time, decision making, and unpleasant physical sensations.
i have disordered eating because, again, getting food is complicated, much less cooking anything. buying 10-12$ of cliff bars at a go and keeping them in my room by my bed gives me a headstart on breakfast and lets me take my meds on time. otherwise i would lie in bed, not taking my meds because i had to eat, and not eating because i was too tired and nauseous from being hungry to get out of bed.
‘just try harder’ is not a solution. figuring out the actual problem and addressing it is the solution.
’normal’ isn’t the goal. you can’t be normal. it’s too late, but you know what, fuck normal. trying to be normal is going to kill you. ‘functional’ is the goal, and you can be functional. you can kick ass at functional. and that’s a lot better.
ANIME NORTH IS OVER. IT WAS WONDERFUL.
Thank you so much to everyone who came by to say hi! I had so much fun meeting and talking to everyone, not to mention seeing, catching up and hanging out with friends/being derps and chatting with other artists!
Let’s start off with the best story that carried us through the entire convention: on Thurs night after the preregistration/art jam zanazac, atorier and I went to Perkins for dinner. The waitress was super friendly and nice … and warned us to “look out for the anime”. atorier says she went around to every table with the same cautions: “There’s 30,000 of them!” LMAO. Yes, it was super tempting to reply with something like I AM THE ANIME!!! but we didn’t have the heart lmao. But for the rest of the convention every so often one of us would exclaim “THERE’S 30,000 ANIME”
Above photos:
Many of the original drawings/paintings I had available for sale at my table
Shot of the back of our table/overhang on day 1 - first time in ages I’ve had an overhanging display thanks to atorier’s industry. The back looked completely different on day 2 because … God, I remember why I hate overhangs (hint: it’s because I’m incompetent). I always tape mine so badly/use 10x the amount of tape compared to everyone else and things always fall over/down and take everyone down with it and basically I shouldn’t be allowed to touch anything. TpT
illintentcomics, phaena and Jason’s amazing JoJo cosplay (Part 3 Joseph Joestar, Will A. Zeppeli, and Jotaro Kujou hanging up his prints in the background lmao)
Hanachan series~ Hanachan is atorier’s new stuffed Wooly the sheep fresh from littlestgiftboutique. It’s so incredibly fluffy and soft~ We posed her around the hotel/Comic Market tables and then put her in phaena’s pigeon head where she drew a lot of attention.
Drawings of ichigorennyu and adonisturtle’s favourite YYH characters for their copies of Demon King! Urameshi. (In case my writing is hard to read - the first one says “Thank you for your support! even though I don’t have much screentime in this book …” and the second says “NO, HIEI!! err … Thanks for buying this book!!”)
Shopping!! Stunning rings from Black Iris Designs, and lots of great books! They are, clockwise from the top left: hilarious Moyoco Anno and Hideaki Anno autobio comic from the Beguiling, growth comic by punimelt and jessicamao, Secret Base artbook by Jessica Mao, Yukionna comic by Carina Rozsi-Sudek.
On the last day I was super impressed to find this ad Tucker’s Marketplace had made for the convention. Unlike practically every other food provider promoting Anime North specials, it didn’t look like it was grabbed from a random Google image search and then dumped into Microsoft Word with a bunch of embarrassing stereotypes. Not only that, it was nicely illustrated and well-designed AND with good copywriting that was both appropriate and recognized Japanese culture and pop culture as opposed to “lol animu”. GOOD JOB TUCKER’S!
Other photos from the con, including commissions I did, my table/gallery setup and other drawings etc. http://maiji.tumblr.com/tagged/anime-north-2015-artists
Yu Yu Hakusho related things (this deserves its own section)
I sold more Yusukes than I thought I would! Most of them were bought by friends lol YAY FOR FRIENDS. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING MY PATHETIC OBSESSION I LOVE YOU ALL \\( T▽T )// Hahaha
TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT YU YU HAKUSHO. There was a girl who expressed her love of Yusuke, and not only bought the Yusuke book but also this original drawing of the four main characters I drew just at the very early beginning of my nostalgia explosion last year. And there was another girl who also showed me photos of a really amazing Hiei cosplay (complete with hiruiseki and a black dragon materializing around the arm). Argh I missed so many cosplays that don’t come by the Comic Market …
satyyynotes told me he played Hohoemi no Bakuden on his radioshow Shibuya Crossing! http://cjlo.com/shows/shibuya-crossing/episode-20051514 Yay! and thanks for dealing with all my yu yu spam
On the last day, my sis also found a Yusuke doujinshi in the dealer’s room for me that I would never have expected to see and texted me with a photo. I looked at my phone and was like “I MUST GO”, dropped all my stuff on my chair for atorier to babysit and dashed halfway across the convention to the dealer’s room to get a look at it. No photo because I’m too embarrassed don’t judge me hahahah
Sales/business-wise!
Sales-wise this was my best convention to date! And I didn’t kill myself doing commissions either, and only stayed up past 1am on one day. YAY! Most of the business came from Demon King! Urameshi and commissions. Having original paintings and drawings for sale was nice too!
I didn’t sell anything in Gallery Momiji, though I honestly wasn’t expecting to. I hope people did at least get to see the Yusuke paintings in person though! (One thing I do wish is that the Gallery was closer to the rest of the artist exhibitors instead of in the Dealer’s Room; I feel like the audience would be better targeted. This isn’t new, however, so I wonder if there are other logistics and reasons that are preventing that.)
Seeing amazing repeat customers. There was even a girl who had purchased my Hello Orange/Hello Squirrel book from a million years ago!
A lot of people commented positively on my and atorier‘s traditional media, original work and books, which was really motivating to hear.
Books wise, a few of particular note - there was a girl who bought both People In Front of Places and Left Me Overs, my two most conceptual books/zines. I was really surprised and happy! I also sold more copies of Pieces Before Dishes than I expected, and a few copies of Mechanism of Magic too!
I’m down to my last copy of perhaps, and out of Chinese Animal Proverbs! I’m thinking of retiring the latter now, it’s had a great run.
As last year, a lot of people thought the STAR SIGNS prints were zodiac signs. atorier says I should just do a zodiac themed thing even if it’s not Saint Seiya fanart. mmm …
Things to remember for next year:
Actually remember to bring my water bottle on Friday. I swear this is like the 3208439204823th convention in a row where I arrive at the Comic Market on Friday, set up the table, sit down and realize, “damn, I left my water bottle back at the hotel and I don’t want to move.”
BRING MORE BUSINESS CARDS. I actually brought enough float this year and no problems with change but atorier and kept running out of business cards and had to ration them. We ended up resorting to using atorier’s insert cards and stamping my info on the back lol
Go buy more display stuff in Japan, specifically more folding stools and folding shelves and folding wood stands and clippy thingos.
Bring white gel pen for working on commissions.
Next time instead of going out for dinner Sat night we’re going to order in. No restaurant in the area is hidden or obscure to congoers anymore it seems …
The change man seems to be gone! I didn’t see him once throughout the convention. Fortunately I remembered this time to bring more float but something to be aware of next year!
I am sorry it is now done and we are back to reality nooooo.
