Hey, Tarra. Got a question about a thing that keeps happening every time I watch a particular Hannibal moment. So in S1 episode 07, the look that Will has when he's watching Hannibal save the person in the ambulance. I've heard from various sources that it was Will figuring out, and dismissing, Hannibals true nature. Others say it was Will feeling aroused and/or attracted to his cannibae? Are there more theories out there? I'm just trying to gather opinions...
If there is anything that can be said for sure about that moment, I think itās that neither us nor Will nor Hannibal knows exactly whatās going on there, but we all agree that it is MEANINGFUL, whatever it is!
In my write-up on 1x07 I decided to go with my original reading, the one that most aligns with the tension I felt as a viewer of a show calledĀ āHannibalā, which is that Will is not seeing what he *should* be seeing here. Itās something I felt the show had a lot of fun playing with in S1, because they knew that we knew, but no one in the show did. And watching Hannibal handle scalpels in peopleās company and talk aboutĀ āhaving you for dinnerā was like, !!!!!!!! In my mind, the deliberately unusual & striking way Hannibal dressed and his absurdly #aesthetic surroundings and mannerisms and all that was also part of the Lalahorrorland fun of him Hiding In Plain Sight.
So when that moment in the ambulance happened, I was just like, Wiiiillll you see too much but not this, oh the beautiful irony. And then combined with Willās sweet little smile when he drops the wine off later, I figured what he was seeing was the good helping Dr. Lecter, the one who saved Abigail ā and can maybe save him too.Ā
In the first season, I still think this would be one of the stronger reads. However, subsequent seasons paint a richer picture of Will Graham, including the big extent to which he sortaā¦ buries things in himself. Pushes them deep down, where he tries not to think about them (but where they still grow, perhaps wilder for being untended). So aĀ late S2 or S3 read on this scene offers up some new possibilities on how much Ripper Will may have actually registered before repressing, and my favorite is @genufaās takeĀ here, because a) loving the monsterĀ just fuck me up,Ā b) the all-at-once/associations-touch-everything incongruity of it feels VERY WILL to me.
Anyhow, Iām sure there are dozens of other interpretations, but the only ones Iām familiar with are my own and genufaās!
