ă superwomană ă
after keiâs advice, yeeun picks up the dress, smiling as though she is holding the sun between the teeth. images flash through her mind â sheâll be super pretty at the party and sheâs going to have so much fun. clutching the dress to her chest, she twirls once, twice, excitement rushing through her veins. however, the mood is dampened when she notices keiâs sudden change in reaction â the kind words replaced by an intimidating look.
âplease donât tell me youâre going to another party.âÂ
yeeun shrinks back, her enthusiasm replaced with a feeling of dread. suddenly, she feels five-inches tall and would like to bury herself under a hole, never to be found again. not able to look into her cousinâs eyes, she stares at the ground as she nods silently, a confirmation that yes, she is attending another party despite keiâs lecture, just a week ago, about responsibilities and always doing the right thing.
as an effort to hold back her tears, yeeun blinks rapidly as she stutters out an apology, âiâm sorry, unnie! b â but i just really want to go out and have fun! i promise, this will be the last party i attend this week!â yeeun tries to ignore the guilt that spreads up her stomach, the reminder that just a few days ago, she had used the same lines on her cousin.
with all her heart, yeeun genuinely wishes that kei would give her another chance. she knows that kei is looking out for her but yeeunâs just trying to make out for missing time. all her teenage life, sheâs never been able to attend parties as wild and crazy as this. sheâs spent her life imagining herself to be a protagonist in a drama but this time, sheâs finally getting the chance to live it out.
so, she hopes, wishes, pleads, begs that kei will let her go.
kei feels her heart soften at the sight of her cousin blinking back tears, and a fleeting thought of letting her go flashes across her mind. kei remembers when she was yeeunâs age, she attended and even hosted parties freely. it is only right to give yeeun the freedom that she had experienced, especially since yeeun has grown up being coddled and protected by her parents enough. despite all the logical reasons not to let yeeun go, kei can sense her excitement at finally being able to grow up and experience a life that any other normal teenager should have.
another thought, however, arises as fast as the previous one disappeared. even if she temporarily puts aside the fact that yeeun is blatantly ignoring her previous lecture, which was supposed to shed light on the priorities yeeun should have, kei cannot ignore how yeeun had failed to bring up a single word about the party she was attending tonight. how many times has yeeun attended parties without telling her?
with that, kei folds her arms across her chest and shakes her head as she lets one single syllable out.
âno.â
keiâs tone is firm, leaving absolutely no space for argument, a complete switch from her usual way of speaking. she has to do this, she has to be firm on yeeun, she has to enforce rules on yeeun, because itâs her responsibility to take care of her baby-like cousin. kei may seem like a dizzy airhead sometimes, but even she knows how much this world can hurt a person. this is especially so for a person like yeeun, someone who has never seen the world for what it really is. it is up to her to protect yeeun from getting hurt, as far as she can.
