Pamela stepped into the Lestrange Inn for the first time since she quit working there. It hadn’t taken her long to see that Atticus had been right. Her being there put Blaise and Elias in danger. That was also why she was keeping her distance from Clara, but today she was here for a different reason. Money was tight again and she needed a job fast if she was going to be able to keep feeding herself and make sure the crew was being taken care of. She’d heard rumors of a bounty hunter that was looking for help. It seemed to be the only business that was booming these days. Now she just had to find her way into it. Seeing the bounty hunter at the bar, she strode confidently over to him and plopped herself in the empty seat beside him. “Tobias Hoffman? I hear you’ve got too much work for one man to handle. I think I can help you out with that,” She said before turning and ordering herself a drink from the bartender. “Assuming the pay is good, of course.” No need to let him know how much she needed the money. He might only pay her less if he did know.

With the ports still shut down and whispers of strange monsters still lurking in the waters, Pamela’s main source of food had been cut off. Rather than fishing for what she could, she had to waste what money she had on buying food at higher prices thanks to it being imported from a neighboring kingdom. Albion was getting harder and harder to live in, and more and more unbearable for herself and the crew of the Trident. They all felt the urge to get back to sea, but now it was an impossibility. Now she was forced to live a normal boring life and try to make her way honestly. It seemed others were coping differently however, for as she was returning home with a bag of food from the market, she felt it pulled from her grasp as someone ran by her. “Hey!” Without another thought, she gave chase through the streets, taking a short cut only once she was sure she knew where the thief was going. Just as he ran by the opening of an alley, she appeared and knocked him on his back. “Come on, just give me the food back and we can pretend it never happened. I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Milo said to her, his brows knitted together. He rested his hands behind his head. “No, I’ll just do what every other person does and pray for their safe way to wherever they rave about all the time.”

“It must be nice to have so much time to spend on the souls of dead fish,” she responded with a raised brow. “I don’t know anyone that cares so much for their safe passage to the big sea in the sky.”

A feeling of guilt washed over her as she heard what the woman was actually here for. It wasn’t for some sinister reason about Nik but something actually relevant. Her father would have given her an earful if he knew she was letting her imagination of Nik get the better of her. But it wasn’t just an imagination with him she knew that priest was up to something but she couldn’t prove it just yet. She had hoped for a moment that this woman was going to be her ticket to getting her there. But not now, not when there was real problems plaguing the city right now.

“Yes, the church has always tried to be a place where the needy can come to. I’ve been working with the church for awhile trying to open up more opportunities for people.” she told the woman. “From what I’ve been told less food is being given out to ensure that we have enough for later. With this sickness killing the fish they don’t want to take any chances. But I’ve been working very hard to try to make up for that. If more people donated then we would have more food. But, it isn’t anything the priests have done.”

Perhaps if food weren’t scarce and the idea of sea monsters didn’t threaten her livelihood, Pamela might have been to the church for an entirely different reason. Perhaps she might have continued digging into the mystery that was Nikki and his past, but as it was, other things had to take priority. Right now, her priority had to be finding a way to make sure she could feed herself and her sister.

“That’s very naive of you,” she commented after listening to Uriel’s piece. “If more people had the food to donate, they wouldn’t need to come to the church for handouts.” Pamela had never been the religious sort. She’d seen too many things the believe there was any God watching over his creations, and she knew well enough that being a priest didn’t make a person inherently good. “I suggest keeping an eye on the fathers. See if their stomachs suffer the same as everyone else’s do.”

“If people decide to panic and find more desperate measures to get away, this will certainly get worse before it gets better.” The chaos that was unfolding didn’t bother him as it should have. “I did not know anyone on the ship. It is still a shame, though, I did not think the king would act in this way.”

“Could you blame them for panicking though? What with the sea monsters and the riots and the death. Fear does not have a tendency to make people rational.” Even Pamela was getting uneasy at the chaos that surrounded the city, and she had grown in chaos. “The kind will have to change the way he handles things soon if he wants to avoid anymore of this.”

“So you haven’t ever seen anything strange while you were out at sea?” She had been to many places, but seeing the dead fish and the way they floated on the water now was unnatural and something she hadn’t seen before on any journey. “Next thing you know, people will be saying that they can walk on land.”

“Not in my experience, but the sea is very large and very deep. Who am I to say that there isn’t something hiding in it’s depths?” she shrugged. “I’ve never heard of anything like this before though so either we’ve made whatever it is angry or it’s come from some unknown part of the sea for some reason.”

“Those people are silly then.” He spoke only the truth. As his Aunt spoke about why she was sad, Triton frowned. Old wounds were opening back up for her once more and she was once again revisiting a reality that no one should keep revisiting. “You do realize you have no control over their fates right? Their actions are theirs to own up to Pleione.” He swam closer to the shore and sat on the sand, his fin laid out on the shore. “I understand you love your family and would do anything to protect them. But it’s time to take care of you instead of betting yourself up to a destiny that was already predetermined. It’s time to start moving forward instead of moving backward.”

“Those people are my family. Or what remains of them.” She gave Triton a soft, sad smile. “I wish it were as simple as just knowing that, but I will always believe there is something I could have done to prevent their fates. It doesn’t have to be rational. Perhaps one day you will understand when you have a wife and children of your own. If I had stood by their actions instead of abandoning them, I’m sure I’d feel different, but that isn’t how things played out. I left them and their lives fell apart. How am I to move on from that? Everything I suffer is because of my own actions, not theirs. Mine came first.”

Theseus leaned over the railing to get a better look at the women. Maybe she was one of those sirens he heard so much about. Luring people to their deaths. But, it didn’t seem like she was doing anything but talking to him. “If I run then that means more of my people will die. I’m a Prince, I’m here to protect my people.” he said. “And who are you?”

“A worthy cause,” Pleione remarked as she treaded the water with more ease than any human would have. “My name is Pleione, Protectress of ships, Daughter of Tethys and Oceanus.” For a moment she seemed to disappear in the waves, and then she reappeared, perched on the railing of the ship. “I’m here to see that your ship makes it safely to Crete. No more of your people need to die.” Normally she wouldn’t be so obvious about helping a mortal, but she empathized with him. He reminded her of her desire to protect her own family. Even if she had failed, she would try to help in what way she could, even if that was just getting him to his destination.

It’s Quiet Uptown || Pleione & Triton [Greek Week]

Triton smiled as he listened to his aunt’s usual witty reply to him. Chilling in the water, he watched as she came closer to him to the shore. Once she was closer to him, his smile started to disappear slowly. The days since putting herself into solitude, she hadn’t been the happiest of gods. Though she had her good days, there were moments she didn’t fair as well. Triton did his best to cheer her up a little between jokes or crazy tales of the jobs his father had him doing, but today was different. Today, Pleione looked as though the earth had shattered for her once more. “I came because I wanted to see you. You haven’t been around very much lately.” he told her. “But…you are different today dear aunt. What has happened to bring you so much sadness today?”

“Thank you for that.” A small, sad smile made it’s way to her lips. “There aren’t many that share that desire anymore.” Especially within her family. Those that were left most likely thought she’d abandoned them and she couldn’t blame them for thinking that. Most of the time she believed it. She knew she should have tried harder to stay by her husband’s side. At his question, her smile faded once more and a distant look came into her eyes. “Today...today is the day I left him. It’s the day I gave up. It’s the day I forfeit the rest of my family, and looking back now...I can’t help but wonder what I could have done to change their fates. To keep them from...” Her voice faltered and a tear slid down her cheek. “I didn’t know that this is what would become of them. If I had...” She didn’t know what she could have done, but she was sure she could have at least tried to prevent their punishments.

Melinoe rolled her eyes with an exaggerated sigh. “What is it with all you people and the guilt tripping, honestly? ‘Oh, Melinoe, leave me alone. Let me dream about ponies and rainbows. Don’t be so mean. Treat others the way you want to be treated,’” she whined, trying to mock the annoying voices of those who always took to scolding her before making a noise of disgust. “Has it ever occured to you that maybe I genuinely enjoy watching people writhe in fear while they sleep? Literally nothing gives me greater joy– so, no. You are not allowed to find peace.”

“Then if that is the truth, I hope that you never find your own peace. I hope you find someone who genuinely enjoys watching you writhe in fear,” she mimicked the other. Being awoken from the few good dreams she had didn’t do much to put Pleione in the mood to empathize. “Or rather, let you find all the happiness in the world and then have it taken from you and just when you find the pain dulling, let nightmares remind you of what you’ve lost and take your joy from that.”

It’s Quiet Uptown || Pleione & Triton [Greek Week]

@pamela-nereida The waves crashed against his back as he watched his aunt in the distance. Since his husband’s punishment was set and her daughter was put in isolation, his Aunt was in a state where she had more or less hid herself. She would come out every once in a while but if he ever wanted to see her, she went see her at the island she mostly stayed at. He was worried though. Mourning over your loved ones was one thing but they weren’t dead. They were alive but only serving punishment for fighting against Zeus. And yet…there was so much more to her pain. So much more that he wished he could help her with. Being so close to her since he was a child, he reached out to her. Made sure she knew she wasn’t alone. And this was one of those moments. He ducked underwater and swam over to the shore. Once he got closer, he popped back up to the surface he called over to her and waved. “You look bored!” he called out. “Mind if I join you?”

Pleione had long since sentenced herself to a self imposed solitude. With all of her children dead or imprisoned and her husband suffering his own imprisonment, there was little left for her to do. Not when she blamed herself for being unable to protect her family. There were few she wanted to see anymore, but her nephew usually managed to make that list. Today however, on the anniversary of the day she’d left Atlas, she felt less up to having company than usual. “Bored isn’t really the word I’d use for it.” She stood from where she’d been siting on the shore and came over closer to the water’s edge. “And what is it that brings you to visit me today, Triton?” Her voice was weary and her eyes sadder than usual. Even after so many years, she still felt her mistakes as strongly as ever. “I’m afraid I won’t be much entertainment for you today.”

“What’s wrong? Never seen someone escorted places by angry soldiers?” Theseus laughed as the two Crete soldiers tightened their grip. “I think they think I’m going to run. Not to fear, I’m not going anywhere. Not yet.”

“I don’t particularly care if you try to run away for not,” she spoke from her place in the water next to the ship. I only came to do my duty, although I do find it strange that a prisoner would so willingly be taken by his captors.”

Spreading nightmares wasn’t always an easy task. It required Melinoe to do her research in order to come up with the best way to inspire fear in someone, and what better way was there to get to know a person than to spy on their dreams? She needed to see the nature of the paradise Morpheus created for these people in order to know the best way to destroy it, but of all the dreams she had observed, this one was by far the most abhorrently pleasant. 

“This is disgusting.”

Pleione was jolted from her dreams by the sound of a voice in her chamber. She sat up in bed only to be met with Melione’s face contorted into a scowl. “I think after my hardships I’m entitled to have a few good dreams,” she replied. “What are you doing here? Just because you can’t find peace doesn’t mean others shouldn’t be allowed to.”

Poseidon smiled, yet there was no warmth in such a gesture, his eyes where as harsh and cold as the oceans he rules.

“He dares to blind my son and then proceeds brag about it, as if such a task is something of pride. So I wreck the bastards ship and drown his crew, I would say that’s a fair trade.More than he deserves”

“More than he deserves? Yeah, that’s on understatement! You’ve landed him on my daughter’s island and she’s making eyes at him. If he is capable of such cruelty, then how do you think I feel about my daughter being enamored with him, hmm? How do I know that when he’s done with her, he won’t do the same to Calypso?”

“Hoping to see the ‘beasties’ that lurk beneath the sea?” She spoke to the person before her, who seemed to be a little too close to the water, a hint of amusement in her voice, “Careful, or you might get more than just a glimpse.”

“If any ‘beasties’ lurk down there, I’m surprised I haven’t seen them yet,” Pamela responded, not bothering to move back from the shore. “Besides, if they exist, I doubt they’d come this close to land. The water gets too shallow.”

“Could you tone it down a bit with your whining? Some of us are trying to care about the woes of dead fish. All of them have to be mourn you know. Please and thank you.”

“What’ll you do, give each and every one of them a proper funeral? You’ve got your work cut out for you.”

“I might have gone through with it if only he wasn’t personification of every flaw imaginable to mankind.” Darcy allowed herself a small chuckle and upon hearing the question, nodded. “Yes, I currently live in a cottage in the woods.”

“So you didn’t object because of some moral compass or for love, you just think he was a shit person?” It was a little amusing to say the least, although if it was just a matter of that, she didn’t understand why the other would run from a comfortable life. People could be avoided if they had to be. “The king’s huntsman lives in that woods. If anyone is looking for you to return you home, you’d best be careful.”
