the thing about NRA gun nuts and those who pretend to be concerned about ‘tyranny’ and the police state is that the only fear it when it doesn’t represent their own interests. for instance, what would i white supremacist have to fear from a white supremacist police state - they run it. their actual fear comes from not being in control of a police state -when that control doesn’t belong to a white patriarchal right wing hand - which is why when Obama was elected (regardless of what systemic control he represents) fear of a police state went into overdrive - because he has a brown face

it’s the same reason why there is no such thing as transmisandrany. a transman is a victim of transphobia because he is trans, not because he is a man.

This is important, because there are many, many sorts of privilege. A trans individual can still have white privilege, able privilege, thin privilege (yes it exists), or straight up socioeconomic privilege, regardless of background. (Think of the trans individuals who can afford hormone therapy and surgery vs those who cannot.)

I am a queer Latina disabled woman, which is like a silver medal in the Oppression Olympics, but I do have cis privilege, (relatively) thin privilege, and socioeconomic privilege (upper middle class, well-educated). If you squeeze it a little, I have light-skinned privilege (though I am clearly not fully white, I’m not dark enough to trigger reflex bigotry in most situations). I try to be mindful of these privileges, and leverage them to help where I can (speaking out, making donations, or just helping one person at a time).

We all need to be aware of our privilege, to stop playing More Oppressed Than Thou, and work together to increase awareness of privilege and how it affects us all - especially the socioeconomically disadvantaged, who often have many privilege strikes working against them. It’s hard to climb out of poverty in a system designed to squeeze all the money to the top - it’s even harder when you are not white, not straight, not cis, disabled, or otherwise do not conform to society’s ‘ideal’.

I am in complete and utter agreement with you.

I, myself, may not have cis privilege but that doesn’t mean I don’t have other privileges. I’m on hormones so I now have male privilege, white privilege, thin privilege and socialeconomic privilege. 

I have it a lot better than other people but I also have it a lot worse. And I do use what I have to help others (donate money, speak out against racism by educating other white people, doing my best to educate other men on misogyny while still remaining safe, etc).

There are a lot of injustices in the world and we don’t make it any better by throwing others under the metaphorical bus.
