unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service
(hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
As I mentioned a few days ago, I wanted to make an updated Vint model for his new design! I think he turned out pretty well (and I 100% prefer it over the original).
The main new thing I did was use a normal map on his hat and coat! Disregarding the UVs in a few areas I think it adds a cool effect and I plan to use them going forward.
(I technically added them to the pants as well but I don't know if they show up lol)
While there isn't much to talk about regarding the face I did rig his eyes similarly to the mouth this time! There are also grease pencil extras (like the eyebags) that can be toggled on and off.
I also added a constraint to the cigar so it moves with the left side of his mouth.
(It works for the right side but you have to move it over first.)
Lastly, I updated the hat rig! It uses shape keys instead of being directly connected so it passes over parts of the head smoother.
(This is not the best animation to show it but whatever.)
Also yes: there is a shape key to take the hat off and I actually took the time to model his hair!!
This does however mean he has a receding hairline.
---
Anyway. That's all I have for him!!!
I once again wish I understood how to share models because I would love to add a link to download him.
And fun fact about this model: This is my first time with these projects where some of the renders (the turnaround video/photos and the pose renders) have used Cycles instead of Eevee! While I love how the lighting looks, my only gripe is that it takes way longer to render than Eevee... hence why I only used it for the highlights of the model lol.
As per usual let me know what you think of him!! Reblogs are appreciated as well!!!!!
I think I'll take a break from the larger projects by creating a new rig for Diana (and maybe Bonnie) and doing something smaller with those models. And then I'll start working on my new sona!!!
I know I've said some of my previous models were my favorite but I think this is DEFINITIVELY my favorite 3d model. Of all time.
PLUS I have a ton of cool things to show off with her (including the rig because I finally learned how to use Rigify!!!!) so if you would like to know more about her then keep reading.....
(REBLOGS AND COMMENTS ARE VERY APPRECIATED!!!!!)
Before I get into the main parts of the model, I would like to highlight the texture first!
While it may not be visible on some of the other works with the compression, I added small halftone dots throughout the entire texture!!!
I also tried to replicate a more painted style throughout... although I couldn't fit the skirt on the UV map so I went for a plaid texture instead.
The design actually comes from one of my drawings from a few months ago!
Apart from the bows being added to match her ribbon (and the skirt ofc) I'd say this ended up being super accurate.
I also had some more practice with vertex groups! I used it to achieve the effect on the eyelashes (by shrinkwrapping only the top to her face) though I used it in some other areas such as to control the outline and the solidify on the sweater.
Okay now for the fun part... HER RIG!!!!!
I used the human Rigify meta rig (minus the face controls) and added some additional controls for her hair and face, so the full rig looks like this:
(Click for better detail)
I will be so honest. As someone who's been making their own rigs for months I absolutely LOVE this rig. It is ridiculously fun to use... or that could just be because most of my rigs are really simple.
I will 100% be using this going forward.
This video (as well as the next video in the series about rigging the face) were very helpful when I was setting this up!
AND. Since I'm using a new rig...
THAT MEANS MORE DANCE BREAKS!!!
Weirdly enough one of my favorite parts is that the feet stay on the ground. I could never figure that out myself.
And as promised the hair does in face have physics now!!!!! Sadly it doesn't work as well on the ponytails as it does the bangs.
Although you can remove her ponytails! I don't think she'd be too happy about it though...
(I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR THIS TO WORK)
That's all that's new with her I think! Like I mentioned at the beginning I think this is for sure my new favorite model. At the least it's definitely a step up from the original...
(This looks like an entirely different character lmao)
I think once I get consistent with using Rigify I might try to learn a toon shader... since I've had practice with regular textures I think it'd be a fun next step.
I also still have plans to redesign and model my sona once I get to 700 followers (as well as to celebrate 50+ models in Blender) so look forward to that sometime soon!!!!!
Also feel free to let me know if you'd like to see some of my other characters in 3D... also yes I know I'm procrastinating on the Robo Sleuths models but I promise I'm just waiting for my motivation to come back first
And as always I'd love to hear what you think of her!!! I know I say it a lot but I do make a lot of large effort projects lol.
Finally: Some extra photos since I could NOT stop posing her....
(okay this one. might actually be bigger than i meant to make it lmao)
