I know that usually using real-world customs in fantasy settings is kind of a lazy shortcut most of the time, but I’m currently thinking about the implications of diamond wedding / engagement rings in a D&D-based setting.

I mean, think about it. You vow to be together “‘til death does us part” and then you give them a way to escape death. You’re literally saying “even death could not keep me from you” or “I will never let you go”.

And of course the more expensive the ring, the more secure the promise. Splurging on a ring isn’t just vanity. It’s literally life insurance. (Or should I say life assurance.)

And even if you can’t afford a 300gp ring, diamonds are still the best choice for a stone. That “cheap” 100gp stone? Crush that up and you have a free casting of Greater Restoration. (If a larger diamond is life insurance/assurance, this is health insurance/assurance.)

Assuming that (as per my typical worldbuilding) a simple Lesser Restoration isn’t enough to cure more serious diseases, and given the common practice of making the client pay for the materials, a set-aside diamond could be the difference between life and death for someone who doesn’t have access to that kind of money.

Idk, I just think it’s a neat side-effect of gems as spell components that would be fun to play around with. The wealthy using veritable bouquets of mid-tier diamonds to ensure their partners will never die. Or a scandalous murder reveals that the victim’s wedding diamond was a fake. Did their spouse do that intentionally, and if so, does that mean they’re the murderer?

What happens when your character realizes they're in love...

Here are some things that may happen when your character realizes they are in love with someone. These can be totally obvious or be super subtle. I think that can depend on your character's mannerisms and personality! Have fun writing!

Notice everything. They start to notice things about the other person. Have freak outs when they notice they notice. They notice nervous ticks, small details no one else notices, patterns.

Hyperawareness. They become hyperaware of their own bodies and what they are doing as well as the other person’s body. They are unable to think about anything other than how close the person is. What they smell like.

They may change their behavior. They may become mean, guarded or distant. They may embrace it, try to see how the other person feels. All that matters is nothing is as natural as it had felt like before. They may realize they want to share everything with that person or notice that they have been sharing everything and stop. Inconsistencies may occur where they are normal one day and distant the next while they try to make it appear like everything is the same.

Self-sabotage. Not all characters will do this, sometimes they will. They might think that the relationship will never happen and that it is doomed before it starts. It may cause them to pull away even more, stop hanging out and “protect” themselves but ultimately push the other person away. Silence becomes deafening and everything is a sign of whether the other person feels the same.

So the people who were emplying my mom gave her a warning ONE FUCKING WEEK in advance that the business is closing and they've know since NOVEMBER.

Insurance was going up or whatever by like 1000? And they said because of it they're closing the business. The 31st of Friday is the last day. They even told the residents not to tell the workers.

And they only actually told her today BECAUSE one of the residents found out. Are you fucking serious. We wouldn't have even known until the last fucking day.

We are literally in the middle of moving. We don't have the money to afford finding a job. They KNEW we've been living every day paycheck to paycheck and they told us so late because they didn't want her to quit too soon.

They knew every exact detail and every reason why this would be devastating news for us. How do you do that to someone. How do you do that to a single mom and 3 fucking kids.

This past year has just been shit. Moving away from my mom's abusive ex not-even-husband of 4 years, WHICH BY THE WAY, is STILL trying to take my sister away ALONG WITH my brothers dad so we have to cover costs for a LAWYER on top of ALL OF THIS, it's just been absolute shit.

Weve been living in an apartment with 4 people and a dog (which we wouldn't have been able to keep if it weren't for my mutual sending me money for her license) for a year.

My mom doesn't even have a bedroom and we could still barely even afford it. The only reason we're moving in the first place is because theres black mold in our apartment that the owners refuse to do anything about because it "hasnt proved to he harmful yet".

My 12 year old brother got into drugs somehow so now we have to deal with that too. I'm so done with everything the past 5 years have just been absolute shit.

Please please please consider commissioning me or just sending me money, quite literally anything helps. I don't want it to have to come down to us having to sell all of our shit just to afford to live. Please help us avoid homelessness.

fun thing ive never seen anyone else point out but is a neat detail:

ford is very physically incapable of watching stan leave. in all instances of stan "leaving", ford does what he can to physically look away which includes closing the curtains when stan gets kicked out

turning his back like a melancholic hero forced to push his beloved away after he tasked stan to get rid of the journal and just assuming stan listened (always thought it was weird he just. turned like this to stan after telling him to sail away until i realized what he was trying to do lmao)

when he got his big man feelings hurt by stan telling him hes no longer family after ford planned to kick him out (yes he has issues)

and my personal favorite which needs no explanation

i'd chalk it up to coincidences that he has a habit of turning his back or closing his eyes whenever this happens, but it happens too many times for it to not feel purposeful imo. call it dramatic protagonism or supression of abandonment issues, its definitely interesting how much ford cant stand to look at stan "leaving" him, especially since. you know. he's the og leaver between them 😭
