Melisande played with her fingers, unsure how to approach the girl. There was a sense of safety around her or maybe Melisande was the only one that felt that. There was also anger and Melisande never knew she was capable of that wrath. Melisande cleared her throat, snapping herself out of it. “I really thought Dorian was a duck, and no one even knows why there’s a party,” she explained with a chuckle. “I’ve been good, I think I’ve sampled all the food on display.” Not enough. Her palate craved something else and Melisande didn’t know how to satisfy herself and that was added to her list of frustrations. “Did you like eating so far?” She asked, she was getting bored of the small talk though, but Melisande knew she had to keep in touch with the woman in front of her.
“a duck? he looks more of a cat to me, if i’m honest. i thought it was his birthday, is it not?” the brunette questioned, suddenly feeling uncertain. “ah, well, the food was good! it must have cost a fortune, so it better have been,” she joked half-heartedly while her mind whispered to her about her real cravings, these much more bloody and satisfying than the bland appetizers she had consumed. “er, nice night we’re having, isn’t it?” she said when the silence became too awkward for her.

Removing her hand from the woman’s shoulder, Kaia looked int he same direction as Ophelia, not noticing any sort of discomfort that she may or may not have shown. “I sure hope there’s some left. I’m starving and I’m pretty sure that the party would be able to hear my stomach growl if it weren’t for the music.” She blushed lightly at the thought of everyone hearing something like that, shaking her head. “Besides, if I’m going to be able to drive home tonight, I should probably have some food in my stomach, not just alcohol.”
“oh, didn’t you eat before the party?” there she was, mom-ing all over the place again. “come on, come on. i’m sure we’ll find something,” a smile bloomed at her face at the blonde’s blush. “and if you’re driving tonight, i’d say you shouldn’t be drinking at all!” her words and the manner in which she uttered them were terribly reminiscent of a teacher scolding her students.

He smiled, he could feel her nerves, but the thought of her being scared of him was thrilling. “Yes, I am.” He shifted his weight, sticking his hands into his pockets. “Ophelia…I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing of that name before. What is it that you do?”
“ah, yes, well, my father was a big shakespeare fan and he considered desdemona but then, well, he thought it was a bit too old-fashioned even for him. but, er, you don’t care about that,” the young fae nervously rambled, starting to fidget with a ring she had on the index finger of her left hand. “anyways! i’m a scientist actually. i’m part of hexcorp’s reasearch division. what is it that you do?” cringing at her question, the brunette quickly averted her eyes embarrassed.

People were laughing, but Melisande saw no one dancing. She adjusted her dress a bit and walked around. A familiar face, kind eyes and a sweet smile. She didn’t realise it but Melisande was making her way to a woman. “Hi,” she said rather awkwardly. “Tell me who I am.” A voice in the girl’s head said; it was almost like a whisper. “How are you liking everything?”
ophelia wouldn’t admit it but she had been staring at the other fae for most of the night. the sight of her had been like a blow to the chest, she had found herself unable to breathe for a moment. as she watched the other flit around, a fond smile had curved her lips. it was a great relief to see her go on with her life. however, the last thing she had expected was the other to talk to her. “oh, hello!” it was weird having to act as if she didn’t know her, but she had decided that in this case ignorance was bliss. “it’s fine, it’s such a beautiful house. and, of course, i’m never one to deny free alcohol.” she laughed nervously. “i was surprised at the invitation, i’ve never met dorian himself before! have you? i mean, he’s such a public figure, i know of him, everybody does but, well--” realizing she had been rambling, she abruptly stopped. “er, how about you?”

“Well lucky for you, you didn’t have to miss out on anything.” At least this time, she thought. “Yeah, the town, and many more like it, are just full of people who would rather hide who they are or be something different than their true selves, if only to make the experience of living easier. Easier for whom… I’ll never know.” Biting her lip, she softly rested her hand on Ophelia’s shoulder. “C’mon, lets go see if they have any good food. You and I need a pick-me-up.”
agreeing with the blond, she nodded but decided against adding any comment. it was not the time for that sort of conversation. ophelia stifled a shiver, human touch still feeling foreign and unnerving after all these years. however, she had become rather adept at hiding such reactions and so her face showed none of her discomfort. “i wonder if there’s any left,” she commented, looking over the crowd towards where the food was. “people made a beeline towards that and the booze when they arrived. honestly, it was a tad embarrassing to even watch.”

Uh-oh, there she was! Ophelia, one of his latest hobbies. (That’s sound so dirty, he loved it.) “Lia, my dear!” incubus purred with growing smile, leaning into her direction. She was interesting; he couldn’t pinpoint on her desires - not around women nor men, practically nobody. It was here, low low below her scent, just tiny bit, but here, yet it seemed locked away and it irks him to no end. He wanted it out, feed on it, but he couldn’t. “Oh, no, please. You can always interrupt my thoughts, don’t even hesitate,” Seth inform her, tilting his head. “Thank you! You look glowing today yourself,” he sends her another smile, letting his eyes to travel over her body. “Do you have fun?”
the term of endearment made her smile wider, even as she felt slightly uncomfortable by his closeness. as it always happened whenever she was near seth, she felt a strange energy that compelled her to stay close, yet her instincts went haywire with the need to keep a healthy distance between the two. “why, thank you!” she replied, the corners of her eyes crinkling and a pink blush coloring her cheeks. “well, i’ve come dateless and just realized i don’t know as many people as i had thought, so it’s been rather lonely,” she admitted with a delicate shrug. “how about you? somehow i feel like this is your natural habitat, so to speak”

“I don’t really feel that comfortable,” She said with a groan, trying to ignore the way certain people looked at her for showing up. “I think a lot of people expected me to just stay at the bookstore. Or the coffee shop. Somewhere where there wasn’t a million and one people trying to have a good time.” She shrugged, taking another sip of her drink. “Well, at least you’ve got me here to keep you company. Because I’m totally so fun at these kinds of things.”
“why would you stay at home? i think the whole town is here, i’d miss you if you weren’t here,” the brunette protested, a frown marring her features. “and i bet we aren’t the only ones feeling awkward, but you know how people are here. façade over façade. they’d never admit they don’t know what to do besides drink fancy cocktails and sneer at each other.” her small rant came to an end when the fae sighed frustrated, downing the rest of her drink.
Seth couldn’t get rid of that irritating feeling in the back of his neck, instinct screaming at him to flee or confront whoever was causing him this discomfort. “I didn’t do anything for you to watch me like a hawk,” he said in a honeyed voice, looking at the other person face with a smile tugging the corner of his lips. “At last not yet,” incubus added with an innocent expression.
“well, not that i’m aware of,” ophelia retorted, tilting her head slightly to the right. “i wanted to come say hi, but you looked so lost in thought i figured i’d wait. forgive me for being polite,” despite her words, the fae’s smile showed her happiness at seeing her... friend? needless to say, their relationship was rather vague. “you look very handsome,” she chirped cheerfully, looking at his attire.

“It’s not my fault that it’s got the same name as you.” She hummed it softly, grinning over her glass before noticing the other girl’s blush. “Yes I’ve seen me and you and I can say with utmost certainty, that you look lovely. So hush.” Kaia chuckled softly before looking at the crowd. “How’re you liking the event so far?”
“well, it’s not mine either!” she protested, rolling her eyes playfully. her cheeks only reddened at the other’s compliment, even as a hateful voice whispered that she shouldn’t feel good about it since it wasn’t her real appearance kaia was praising. biting her bottom lip a bit too roughly, ophelia ignored those thoughts and replied: “a bit underwhelming, i must say. i feel completely inadequate, surrounded by such, uh, exhibition of wealth. and the fact that i’m friends with approximately five people here doesn’t help. but how about you? are you having fun?”
what would you do for a klondike bar?
“i’d fight to the death for it,” she deadpanned, a stifled smile curving the right corner of her lips.
What’s a genuinely hurtful comment you can’t forget?
“well, freak of nature or simply monster are somewhat unforgettable.”
“Enjoying my party?” He smiled wide, approaching the stranger from behind and resting his hand on their shoulder; demanding their attention.
ophelia jumped slightly at the unexpected touch, her head snapping to look at the owner of the hand currently posed on her. “ah, yes, what a great event” she quickly complimented, a nervous smile curving her lips. “oh, you’re dorian davenport!” the fae suddenly realized, an embarrassed blush coloring her cheeks. “i don’t believe we’ve met, i’m ophelia fitpatrick, pleasure to meet you.”

“Don’t make me start singing the Lumineers again, sweets.” Kaia teased, shaking her head at her friend. They weren’t too terribly close but a coffee shop had been the most efficient place to bond, it seemed. “I don’t want to hear anything else about cheese for the rest of the night. Or ever. Also–You look fantastic.”
“that song will haunt me forever,” the fae replied in faux solemnity. “okay, you won’t hear the c-word from me again, but you should definitely check your store. it’s practically an infestation.” ophelia felt her cheeks heating up at the her friend’s comment and she looked down self-consciously at her dress. “me? have you seen yourself? you look like a model, kaia, without the pressure of a toxic industry pushing you down, of course.”

Cecelia: what the hell
Cecelia: you are NOT wearing the same watch that I am
Cecelia: take it off. it looks tacky on you
Ophelia: two things, babe
Ophelia: firstly, why are u texting me?? we are literally 3 feet away from each other
Ophelia: secondly, i'm not wearing a watch but i bet it'd look better on me
“No, I don’t know where you heard that. I don’t have cheese in my… Books.” Kaia hung her head as a random person at the party walked away from her. She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose before clearing her throat. “I could kill whoever started that terrible rumor.”
“you may not want cheese in your books, but i can assure you it’s there. the last novel you recommended me — which was amazing by the way, what a plot twist! — had a slice of blue cheese inside. it was somehow fresh.” ophelia responded, her eyes shining mischievously. “and you know i don’t condone murder; perhaps you could fill their house with cheese as revenge?”
