Exciting Details About The Game Design of Dement
Hello again to all you future Paracytik fans! It’s Jade, this time reporting from Stockholm, Sweden! It’s been a crazy week for all of us at Paracytik, now that our first trailer for Dement has finally been released! 🎉🎉
We are excited to see the interest and excitement surrounding Dement, so I thought I would give you all some additional details on the upcoming game, taking a closer look at some of the enemies that players may encounter, among other things...
Although a few of the enemies that the player may encounter were shown in the first trailer, there are quite a few more that have yet to be revealed... The “sunken” come in several different varieties, each with a little touch that makes them unique as enemies. We want to offer our players the sort of game that we ourselves would like to play, and an interesting variety of enemies ranks pretty high on that list of features.😊 Some enemies are blind and do not respond to flashlights, while others are deaf - they won’t respond to footsteps or gunshots. Every enemy type has a tailored hearing and seeing ability, from field of view to how far they can see. This also applies to how sensitive their hearing actually is, from stone-deaf to hyper-sensitive. Stealth is always a preferable tactic when it comes to avoiding your own death in Dement, especially when it comes to some of the bigger monsters.
The inspiration for Dement came from many different places, and the team at Paracytik has added a few nods to the classics of the horror game genre in our own creation. 😉 One fun little easter egg that some of you likely have noticed would be the name of the larger region where Dement takes place... Quiet Mountain. Taking inspiration from the likes of Silent Hill, Twin Peaks, and similar media, the team at Paracytik has shaped Dement carefully with a sprinkling of meta-knowledge to add to the play experience of psychological horror enthusiasts. We have enjoyed fitting in these little nods to the works that inspired us, and we hope that our players will enjoy them too. Finding easter eggs in games during the PS2 era was a ton of fun. We have put a handful of them into our own game for our players to discover - some are easy, such as “Quiet Mountain,” while some are much harder to find. 👀 Explore the expansive environments and see if you can find them all!
Although it may have been inspired by other genre classics, Dement has grown beyond being a simple homage to the likes of Silent Hill. And while it has elements of horror, we like to think of it more as a psychological action/adventure thriller set in a horror world. Even the “sunken” themselves, for all their monstrous appearance, may belie other mysteries for the player to unravel. What secrets will you discover?
A new trailer is already waiting in the wings, so stay tuned for more updates about Dement! I’m looking forward to sharing it with you! ❤❤❤❤❤
