WBJ2020 - aquatic animals

Seachickens

appearance - short, fat, aquatic animal with bright colored scales and fins. their legs are stocky and they have small claws on each foot, but these claws are mainly for scraping algae off of rocks. they do also have a few sharp teeth, so they’re not entirely harmless.

environmental niche - a wild variant can still be found in the rivers of the jungles outside of Bonsai; these fish are otherwise fully domesticated for farm use.

societal relation - aquatic livestock, bred for meat and eggs. the eggs are surprisingly versatile for cooking and easy to keep, as long as you have some kind of sealed container you can store them in with cold clean water (this could be a thermos, if you’re on the road).

Seabats

appearance - large bipedal aquatic animals with medium-sized leathery fins. usually purple-grey in color. lots of large, sharp teeth that regrow quickly when lost.

environmental niche - larger seabats are found deep in the oceans surrounding the slider town of Splash, but smaller species of seabat can be found in other seas. these animals are voracious predators that feed on many smaller fish, but they don’t eat much of anything else.

societal relation - this is a completely wild animal! they generally won’t attack if you don’t smell like their usual food.

Seadoves

appearance - small, chubby fish. tiny round fins, come in a rainbow of colors.

environmental niche - found in basically any all rivers across the garden. eats a wide variety of vegetation as well as even smaller fish.

societal relation - these animals were fully domesticated once, but now there’s a large feral population from pets that were gradually abandoned. fancy breeds are still popular among seadove enthusiasts, though.

Molefish

appearance - these come in a wide array of sizes, between 1 foot and a couple yards depending on the species. their two small limbs are equipped with long, thick claws for digging through packed sand and mud, and their fins are extremely small.

environmental niche - there are freshwater and saltwater varieties, found across the Garden. they mainly feed on small crustaceans or slugs, anything that walks too close to their tunnels or burrows through the sand nearby.

societal relation - these are almost entirely wild, since they’re reclusive and a little difficult to keep as pets. a couple species are farmed for their soft, delicious meat, though.

WBJ2020 - milkbeasts

appearance - quadruped with soft short fur, commonly white with pastel browns but come in a range of colors. the legs are long and the neck is tall, to allow the animal to eat leaves and fruits from tall trees. males grow (relatively) small antlers to spar with. babies have spots and stripes that fade when they mature.

environmental niche - found wild in the untamed wilderness outside of Treat. escaped livestock can sometimes be found in other areas, but they can only spread in areas that have a lot of vegetation. the jungles outside of Bonsai are a place where wild milkbeasts have been spotted, though they’re noticably taller than usual in that area...

societal relation - domesticated for livestock. their large and tall bodies provide a lot of meat, and they produce a lot of milk. some farms in Treat have been known to feed their milkbeasts very specific fruit diets, which influences the flavor of the milk (and the meat, to a lesser degree, but there are definitely food snobs who specialize in analyzing the fruit-tinged steaks).

paradise tourism is a story about outcasts fixing a world that didn’t know how to accept them.

it takes place in a world called “the garden” that’s effectively made up of a bunch of floating islands in space. every island is affected by some kind of atmospheric magic that works in a pair to a different magic. it’s all very surreal and off-kilter, but that’s okay: it’s mainly only supposed to make sense to the people living in it.

anyway this year i think i’m gonna try to focus on animals in the setting.

i should probably briefly mention: i don’t plan on working on this setting for WBJ this year. there isn’t really anything i can build further until i can actually start making the game this is for, which, probably won’t be for a while longer. i WILL be doing some worldbuilding, but just for a different setting of mine. thank you.

wbj18 day 20: Ripple fauna

Animals that live in the wetlands of the Ripple petal are often colored in muted greys with splashes of neon hue, and also make a Lot of noise. A creature common to the lakes and ponds of the Ripple petal is the Choir Fish; a round little amphibian with tiny fins and three large air sacs. The Choir Fish can inflate and vibrate each air sac independently, which it uses to create a very synthetic-sounding trill. Different Choir Fish like the sounds of different trills, and they tend to form mating pairs based on trills.

The Laughing Heron is the natural predator of Choir Fish. This wading bird got its name from its distinctive call, which has been known to confuse travelers - imagine exploring the lakeside, and hearing multiple people laughing extremely loudly in the distance, from multiple angles. Laughing Herons are solitary animals, though, so they don’t travel or feed in groups.

And, as is the case with any petal, if you travel too far into the wild, the animals start... changing, subtly.

wbj18 day 19: plush people

Mixen can possess any manner of objects, “wearing” whatever they like, and working together with designers at Treat Studio, it’s somewhat common (though expensive) for Mixen to wear customized plush bodies.

It’s known that if what a Mixen is wearing gets damaged, it doesn’t necessarily hurt the Mixen themself, since it’s not part of their real body.

Blanks... don’t work like that. When Blanks started appearing around The Garden, they were initially mistaken for Mixen, but the plush IS their real body - there’s nothing else possessing it. You can cut it open and remove the stuffing, or add more stuffing, or sew extra limbs on; but this is painful for the Blank, whereas damaging a Mixen’s suit is just an inconvenience.

Also, of course, Mixen existed before the Blooming, but Blanks only started showing up after the Blooming.

Some random fauna for day 18.

Dirtpup - small, mammalian. Lives in areas with loose soil that it can easily tunnel through with its pointed snout and wide claws. Tends to live in small colonies, which make winding connected tunnels under the ground. It eats bugs and smaller animals it can catch, and it loves fish, but the only way it can get fish is by stealing from something else that caught one.

Basker - large, reptilian. Lives in large bodies of water with a lot of exposure to sun, and has freshwater and saltwater varieties. They hunt on animals that land on the surface of the water, as well as animals deeper underwater. Baskers have a large lung capacity that allows them to stay at the bottom of a body of water for about half an hour if needed... but they prefer to float at the top of water and sleep in the sun.

wbj18 day 17: where sliders live

Positioned between the Chill petal and the Ripple petal, the Burst petal is covered in water. The water has a strange property though; the closer to the inner petal you get, the more it repels away from surfaces, making it impossible to float on the water. Adventuring to the inner corner of this petal means trekking across the sea bed.

The town of Splash is situated on a small island in the middle of the sea, with a significant portion of the town built on docks extending into the water. It’s a pleasant place, though constantly wet from sea spray. Since it’s the only currently inhabited town with access to a non-frozen sea, the industry here is focused on fishing and harvesting sea plants.

There are other towns out on other islands in this sea, but again, they’re mostly abandoned. Nearest to the inner corner is a town that seems to have slid off of the island it was built on, sinking straight to the seafloor around the island.

wbj18 day 16: where mixen live

Positioned between the Heat and Silence petals, the petal of Gravity is also quite dry. It’s also strangely flat, as it seems like near the inner point, the hills crumbled and fell to the ground.

The town of Erode is one of the oldest towns still inhabited by people, and it shows. The aesthetic is weathered and vintage... though, the town’s residents make sure nothing is actually worn-down. Despite the unifying look of everything being a bit old, the town is also rather patchwork, as many buildings are made of entirely different materials, and built in different styles. Erode’s economy is based around industries of construction, and hunting for antiques in old ghost towns.

Outside of Erode, there are a couple of ghost towns, as well. They’re dusty, and there’s a higher concentration of Constructs wandering the area. Notably, the closer you get to the inner point, the more the buildings have crumbled, seemingly collapsing under their own weight.

wbj18 day 15: Sliders

Sliders are the final race in The Blossom. They are fairly large, semi translucent, and seem to be made up of some sort of liquid. Sliders are the race associated with Burst magic, and they have some interesting traits to show it.

For one, their skin is unbelievably slippery and rubbery, and has the consistency of gelatin. Somehow, their skin also seems to repel other objects very well, so it’s incredibly hard to hurt them - force applied with fist and blade alike simply slide off of them. This also means it’s kind of difficult for Sliders to wear clothes, so they tend to opt for either long sleeved button-up shirts, or nothing at all.

Sliders also have the strange ability to shed their outer layer at will, which includes their limbs and tail. They can grow back what they shed fairly quickly, but they have difficulty reattaching what they shed, as it seems to act as though it’s a different material after it’s shed.

Interestingly, there’s a special dyable material that can be made from a certain plant where the Sliders live; dying this material allows Sliders to color their outer layer. This is the only way Sliders can tattoo themselves, as actual tattoo needles can’t pierce their skin accurately.

wbj18 day 14: Burst

The second half of a pair of magnetic magic, Burst magic is associated things moving apart.

Not necessarily explosion-related, Burst is associated with the repulsion of objects, particles flying away. While this can be used to cause explosions in certain cases, this can much more easily be used to cause a gust of wind, or to dry something off by repelling water. The repulsion of a material isn’t even necessarily violent, it can be as mild as the material sliding off of the repelling surface.

Day to day uses include undoing small constructions, separating mixed fluids or powders, or even mild levitation to assist with moving a heavy object or person. Combat uses include making the enemy lose any armor or weapons they may be equipped with, quickly levitating them to trip them during movement, or repelling water while in a body of water to cause immediate sinking.

wbj18 day 13: Gravity

One half of a pair of magnetic magic, Gravity magic is associated with things coming together.

As well as the obvious association with magnetic minerals sticking together, and the pull of gravity affecting matter on a planet, Gravity magic can simply be responsible for the adhesiveness of any particular object.

Day to day uses for this magic obviously include temporarily sticking objects together during construction, or to keep something out of the way. Combat uses include making projectiles home in on an enemy, and slowing down the enemy by sticking large objects to them, or increasing their gravity to the earth below.

wbj18 day 12: Mixen

Something new? I wouldn’t believe it!

The Mixen are a race that live in the Blossom, and are associated with the magic of Gravity.

Mixen can change their body shape at will - they can have different numbers of arms and legs, tails, wings, and other small body parts. No matter what shape they take, though, their body is slightly incorporeal. They can interact with objects to an extent, but if you pressed your hand to their skin, it would sink through.

Most Mixen do not leave their “real” body uncovered, though; Mixen can “wear” any kind of inanimate material, including but not limited to wood, rocks, metals, glass, crystal, porcelain, and fabrics. When they wear a material, the part of their body they’ve covered seems to disappear, with the material essentially replacing that part of their body.

It’s not necessary for a Mixen to wear only one kind of material, either. While it’s easy enough to just wear a bunch of rocks, many Mixen choose to wear a variety of materials, with clothes being a popular choice.

As a fun final note, if the “head” a Mixen wears doesn’t have a face on it, the Mixen will usually draw a face on with marker or chalk.

wbj18 day 11 - Heat and Chill

The magics of Heat and Chill could easily be left at “fire and ice”, but there’s some nuances to them. As these two magics are tied to temperature, they are tied to the vibration of atoms, and how fast the vibrations are... Heat is associated with speed and Chill is associated with pausing.

The race most closely tied to Heat magic are the Whiptoads. Whiptoads are big, the second-biggest race in The Garden, and they have a notable feature of having more than two eyes. Their extra eyes are said to have different kinds of vision depending on their arrangement on the face... night vision is most common, but other kinds of vision include “foresight”, “hindsight”, and whatever you’d call being able to see through people’s lies. Whiptoads mainly live in a modern desert town named Sizzle, which is situated in a small valley, shielded from the harsh sun. Despite Heat magic being associated with speed, and thus, onward movement, the Whiptoads are very interested in history, and a significant number of Whiptoads go into archaeology to learn more about the past.

The opposing race, tied to Chill magic, are the Leppies. Leppies are the absolute smallest race in the Garden, being small bug-like people. Leppies come in a small variety of wildly differing body shapes (some are like moths, some are like mantids, so on) and are covered in soft fur. They also have “wings” that are more like prehensile extensions of their manes. Leppies mainly live in the city of Negative, which is built on top of a shallow frozen lake. Despite Chill magic being associated with slow movement and pausing, Leppies concern themselves with the future, and a lot of Leppies go into engineering fields to push technological advancement.

wbj18 day 10 - Silence

Silence magic is on the other end of the spectrum from Ripple. It is magic associated with matter staying absolutely solid, particles locked in place. This also means it’s associated with a lack of sound.

Mockbirds are the race associated with Silence. Gemstones in their throats prevent them from speaking loudly, and they mainly communicate with sign language.

The Silence Petal is entirely light grey/white, and made of steep cliffs and mesas. The Mockbirds carved their temples into the sheer rock faces. In these temples, Mockbird priests discuss the cause and effect of the Blooming, and how to spread their understanding to people in other countries... These people devoutly believe that the Blooming was the fault of the Old Kingdom, due to some sort of secret that was being kept from the rest of the world, and in order to turn things back to normal and rid the world of wild magic, everyone needs to take responsibility for whatever happened to cause the Blooming.

wbj18 day 9 - Ripple

Ripple magic, at its core, is the magic of matter moving in fluid motion. This is twofold: it turns things into a fluid state, and it carries sound.

The race most associated with Ripple magic are Loudmice. Their large ears not only allow them to hear very well, but they also amplify their own volume when speaking.

The Ripple Petal is mostly black, with rings of bright color pulsing through the hills and lakes. Almost anything that’s colored differently from the greyscale surroundings is usually bright neon, and constantly changing color. Loudmice love to party, and travel to many other countries just to party with different people. Out of all the people in The Garden, Loudmice seem to be the least worried about post-Blooming destruction and wild magic, as whenever the topic comes up in conversation, they generally seem to think nothing in particular caused the Blooming, so there’s no reason to do anything about it.

wbj18 day 8 - Harmful Ghost Towns

Brier Village - A small run-down town near Puncture. It was once a good source of prickleberries, and that still holds true, since the town is absolutely overrun with twisting, thorn-covered berry bushes. Rebellious Butcher youth have smashed every window in every building of this town, so broken glass litters the streets, and the cacti that people decorated their gardens with have outgrown their pots. Between the glass, the berry thickets, and the cacti, it’s really not fun at all to explore this ghost town.

Camp Whetstone - Butcher society has had a long running problem: when someone does harm against another person, how does one prevent the perpetrator from harming again? Other societies have figured out how to look into the root causes of why people would commit crimes and prevent them accordingly, but Butchers found their solution in Camp Whetstone. Butchers who choose to go to Camp Whetstone rather than an actual rehab facility (and it WAS only Butchers who chose this) had their horns and claws and blade filed down, and worked each weekday on various different tasks to produce things for the city.

It wasn’t a good life, but Butchers seemed to like it. The facility is no longer in use, but there are stories that there are still people living in the camp, now violent and mad from being isolated from the rest of society during the Blooming.

Sadomaso Chasm - Across a large canyon, crossing an ornate bridge, you can find a castle that used to be situated fairly close to the Old Kingdom. This isn’t part of that Kingdom, though; this was the original location where the Butchers kept their Queen. Dried up water fountains decorate both inside and outside of the castle, and lower floors of the castle are lightly flooded... the further down the castle one goes, the more it looks like some sort of dungeon, with barred cells and chains hanging from the walls and ceiling in every room and hallway.
