Tiny Loop Tuesday: week 19!
A continuation( https://tmblr.co/Z3eUpxixGIbs0m00 ) because I'm having fun with this
Really hate that most people don’t understand the difference between “self-expression” and “artistic-expression.”
I say this as someone who sells pottery, and many people who see my art assume I am using art as an outlet to “express myself.”
I am not.
I use art to challenge myself. A lot of what I do is the equivalent of doing a hard sudoko or a half marathon, answering the question of “can I do this?”
I use art to question things and explore ideas. Finding physical synthesis between concepts and working out a design to its end state.
I use art to make money. I make some things just because I suspect they’ll sell well, and I keep making them when they do.
This idea that an artist is “putting themselves out there” every time they create is not only stupid, but harmful, and it kills critique and analysis.
Yes every creative work is influenced by its creator, but the most preliminary step of analysis is to define the purpose of a work of art (functional, narrative, entertainment, persuasive, decorative, ceremonial, etc.) and a vanishingly small percentage of that is self-expression. Even then, it’s generally tied to the self’s relationship with something else—perception, society, etc.
It’s very tiresome to have people assume they know you because they like (or dislike) your art, to make assumptions about who you are and how you approach the world. It’s nothing new— people called the Impressionists insane and the Fauvists degenerate. And now people are expected to hand out their identities and traumas to prove they have the right to explore certain subjects.
But to actually understand art, you have to contextualize it beyond assuming it’s just what the artist felt like making at the moment and it’s somehow coming from their deepest soul, or you’ll badly misinterpret most art you come across.
(you saved yourself some time)
textpost description: "guy stuck in a timeloop who says “speedrun strats” out loud every time they discover a new weird thing they can do that leads to a good outcome while also making them look completely insane to everyone else in the vicinity" full image:
So I drew Odile in this one cool collage/patchwork type shirt i saw at goodwill.....and i like how it turned out overall. She looks very cool in the shirt. As i suspected. Yayyy :3
Aaand a picture below of the shirt i referenced for those curious:
Post game where Loop eventually returns some time later after Siffrin has had time to internalize Loop's advice to get gud better and has been working with his friends to slowly improve can be such a great thing. Because it means Loop gets to be mad Siffrin is being a better Siffrin again while also being so proud at the same time and it's eating them alive, inside out, while every look from the party feels like it's melting their skin with acid.
But at sometimes Siffrin looks proud of them too so they have to keep going "fuck it we ball" while trying not to cry.
saw this twitter post and I had to. enjoy the text post off I go back into the void
irritating as fuck when people get mad at Black people existing in premodern historical fiction/fantasy media. like first of all, you're racist. and second of all, you are acting as though Black people didn't exist in premodern Europe which is simply false. especially when we're talking about the Mediterranean, like what the fuck do you people think is along the southern half of the Mediterranean Ocean?? everyone's on boats, there are GOING to be interactions with Black people in Northern Africa, and there are GOING to be Black people in Mediterranean Europe. stop being stupid. your imagined homogeneous white European past is not historical reality, get over it you massive losers
(scarlet hollow spoilers)
Avery is such a fun character. they come across as so chill and normal and then you talk to them a little bit and they’re like “isn’t it so exciting and cool that horrific things have started happening around town” and “getting forcefully meat puppetted until my bones ache by a vengeful ghost is the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me” and they look at a screaming fleshy tendril pumpkin baby created by a witch and raised on human blood and has attached itself to an unwilling human host and is slowly draining him of his blood and life, and they go “well regular pregnancies can be pretty messy and dangerous too, this isn’t so different. isn’t that just the miracle of life? it’s literally just a baby, it doesn’t know what it’s doing”
and i, a person who finds “regular” pregnancy unsettling and kind of horrifying and would consider it a nightmare if it ever happened to me despite it being a perfectly normal and natural and even wanted part of existence for many people, go “damn they’re right though”
break time means different things to different people
I love them very much, If you haven't figure it out yet
If Your Scene Feels Lifeless, Someone Is Being Too Polite
Stories stall when everyone behaves. Real tension appears when someone:
• asks the wrong question • says something they shouldn’t • notices something uncomfortable • refuses to drop the topic • misunderstands something important • interrupts at the worst moment
Conflict doesn’t always look like shouting.
Excuse me They asked for no pickles >:( (your pick of who lol, love ur stuff!)
