Before You Think

The magazine is the outcome of a year long collaboration between PS participants, Antonia Brell (Berlin), Sophie Dyer (London) and A Feral Studio (Glasgow), which began with a radical pedagogy workshop in Scotland last winter.

There will be a workshop at 6pm as part of the Antiuniversity Now festival. We'll be discussing free schools/pedagogy projects as frontier spaces …how, and for what, is up for debate! Parallel School Leipzig

Parallel School Leipzig happened while the city was haunted by a heatwave. Each day we visited another part of the city by bike and built up our “parallel office”. In a backyard, under the trees, in a bar and at the lake – in search of a shady places, we stumbled across wonderful moments of community. We predicted each others futures and baked bread that we ate after swimming. We discussed at night around a campfire, and struggled to get up early. We made sculptures out of trash and re-enacted scenes from each others lives.

On the hunt for undefined knowledge, we questioned the production of information. In the course of the week, we discussed our role as designers in an environment that is reinventing itself constantly.

Eventually… finally… at last… here is the journal from the Parallel School during the OFF program of the 26th International Biennal of Graphic Design 2014 in Brno, supported by Verein der Gestaltung e.V.

Parallel School Brno

We asked ourselves what we want education to be and exchanged different approaches on teaching design. We discussed with the curators about this year’s Biennal, their role as teachers and if students censor themselves. We got our hands dirty and painted collaboratively. We thought about appropriation and its connection to education. We visited the Villa Tugendhat and traced its history with earphones, pencils and copy machines. We reviewed the so-called importance of failing and examined possibilities to visualize thought. We compared our individual ways of seeing and explored the visual language of education. We visited the exhibition »Take a Line for a Walk« with curator Nina Paim and problematized the role and use of assignments. Finally, we held the lecture »Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish, Said the Academy and Fed Us to the Lions.«

In the spirit of self-education every participant contributes by sharing their interests and specialties with any possible means. Parallel Progress

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch over the last week to request a place at Parallel School Glasgow. Spaces are filling up fast! So far we have participants from Helsinki, Brazil, Germany & the UK.  It promises to be a brilliant four days! There will be details of guests lectures to come soon. Metahaven are confirmed to speak on Monday evening as a part of the exhibition, 'It's Not Very Nice That', curated by, Neil McGuire, one of the school's organisers.
