Am i more of a loser or a goner
Its ok if u say both because i know truth is suposed to hurt a lot for dumb fucks like me
everyone sees themselves as the sperm and not the egg #misogyny
girl with massive memory issues: i don't think i have ever had any regrets in life really
knuckle tattoo that says i am nostalgic for a time where i wasn't even happy
esoteric ebb fucking me up because I know irl D&D rules and did not realize I could clear exhaustion by short resting (which is a valid and good mechanic). also I did almost die on that fuckass windmill. and then again from that fuckass assassin. Snell likes me more though AND we now have reasons to explore the city beneath which is really all I care about.
final thought: when will someone do a Disco-like video game set in Besźel/Ul Qoma from The City and the City. I know the licensing will be hellish and the programming worse, however, I want this so much you don't even know.
Shnail loves it when E.B. makes that face that they hate! Especially the classic screaming face by horror manga artist Kazuo Umezu.

This post would go on Reddit but I don’t have enough karma 🤮 The lack on consistency in the lore of Marathon is seriously starting to piss me off. Most glaringly is the fact that there seems to be zero cutural or technological difference between Sol and new cascadia, which is particularly annoying when the project Goliath planning docs explicitly say that the project expedition should expect severe culture shock, because new cascadia has had at least a hundred years of isolation to diverge from sol. Even if new cascadia didn’t have that chance cause everyone died shortly after founding, there was at least 200 years for the corp/UESC culture back in sol to evolve and change but it still seems to have the exact same culture/aesthetic of the colony. This is the most glaring issue but there’s tons of inconsistencies like that. Just read a log mentioning the colonists breathing TCIVs air but then every depiction of colonists outside shows them wearing space helmets. Another annoying thing is that it still makes like zero sense for the corps to go to TCIV. The colony was not founded for any economic benefit, the distance makes any trade with sol unfeasible. From the start there was zero expectation of TCIV sending things back to sol. The UESC sent the marathon in its role as the government of humanity with the only benefit and motivation being the intangible one of spreading humanity and further insulating it from extinction, as seen in lots of non ftl settings with interstellar colonies. The UESC sends project Goliath to make sure there isn’t some extrasolar threat developing, either MIDA or a rampant AI, but that doesn’t make sense as a motivation for the corps. How the fuck did traxus ever expect to ‘recoup’ on its investment in the first place and what does it expect now? To send its shit from the colony back to sol? One reason that would make sense if there was a possibility that new cascadia had developed new technology that sol doesn’t have, but that’s clearly not the case. The obvious motivation for any economically motivated entity to go to TCIV is to study the alien invasion, but there’s zero indication anyone even considered that or is even aware of it. The only factions with understandable motivations are MIDA and arachne
On further consideration I guess the corps motivations do make a bit more sense. CyberAcme’s motivation/benefit is to do (psychological?) experiments on the runners and maybe check up on the colony AIs. Sekiguchi can monitor how its shells perform as the runners essentially stress test them. NuCaloric still doesn’t make much sense as the UESC is already there to investigate the colony and find out what wrong. Traxus saying ‘recoup our investment’ still makes zero sense but I guess it’s more from them being the UESC’s most direct rival and unwilling to let the UESC do anything unsurveilled. Still annoying though. Traxus is the faction in most need of a coherent and logical motive because they seem to be the ones mostly responsible for sending the runners to TCIV. Even without the motivations I gave earlier CyberAc and Seki could be there just to help support and supply the runners. It also just doesn’t make much sense for Traxus to use mercenaries in the first place given they had to send everything to TCIV anyway. Why not just send loyal corpo soldiers or send mercenaries with an exclusive contract? Sending independents just runs the risk they’ll act counter to traxus’s interests. The traxus chat logs have some shit about legal liability and plausible deniability (don’t get me wrong, I usually love this kind of thing because I work in transactional law) but it should be obvious to the UESC that traxus is behind the people killing all their robots

The city and the city. Good read, but I do wonder what mieville is trying to say. It partly seems to be commenting on the absurdity of borders. No one ever directly confronts the absurdity of the cleavage, which I realize is the point, but the book seems to favor the cleavage, that it’s a good thing, that while it may have its problems it’s a viable long term solution instead of forcing two disparate groups to subject themselves to the same political authority. But that essentially amounts to a defense of borders and border control (breach is also portrayed as a good, ultimately necessary thing. Breach is functionally ICE).
Genuinely curious because I doubt mieville was trying (or wanted) to say any of that
Okay maybe more a reflection on the importance of being able to tolerate differences, but it still seems to imply that different groups should have different governments. Like the cities are absolutely born out of the ultimate rejection of pluralism

My god he’s a fucking classically trained violinist
Dude this is lowkey heartbreaking
Truly a haunting example of the endless tragedies that play out across the internet each known only to a few hundred random people at most. Kinda makes me want to write his story, an old man dying of cancer, retired from his long career as a musician and composer, is somehow struck by a deep love for ponies and connects with the younger generation through the brony community, only to one day log off and never come back online, almost certainly having passed into the hooves of celestia
