as someone who finds the parasites and hirokawa interesting bc I too lack certain "universal" human frameworks i.e. asexual agender schizoid, the manga made their lack of certain traits interesting where relevant (such as the mother imposter taking over a man's body temporarily due to having no inherent gender and then being unable to control said body bc of biology)

the anime irritatingly forced the species to fit into a sliding scale of boringly nonhuman to sentimentally human and changed them from "interesting because of a lack of human frameworks", not to "interesting despite a lack of human frameworks" but to "boring and insignificant bc of a lack of human frameworks" (with tamura's design humanization near her death as the exception that proves the rule)

tfw hirokawa's main problem is being unable to push back against the people he respects even when he and the others have different opinions LMAO. first tamura and her shinichi fixation, then gotou and his choice to let miki try, both of which ended up in bigger problems. sad!

kusano totally decided to keep hirokawa out of the loop during the attempted assassination bc he already knew that hirokawa was going to tell him no. and so did tamura.

for hirokawa as I've interpreted him, there's two options of him desiring gotou, and both shape his character's portrayal meaningfully.

if hirokawa initiates something based on his desires, while aware that gotou does not perceive sexual interest the same way, that says something about what hirokawa is willing to do for his own interests in an almost paternalistic way even if it benefits gotou's hunger.

if hirokawa does not act on his wanting at all, that's something approaching a self-sacrificial refusal of vulnerabilities; acting on it reveals something about him whether or not gotou understands it, respecting gotou's nature regardless of possible benefits to both.

given the canon, with him being a political leader using gotou's species' instincts and capability for his own purposes that they don't care about, and yet hirokawa being deeply embedded in their meetings and society without fear for his own life, both are available highly divergent paths. they depend almost entirely on how much hirokawa prioritizes himself in the hierarchy of his own knowledge vs how he would respect otherness in his human framework

gotou on the other hand has no moralistic views regarding this. he operates on give and take - sexuality falls in the same alien category as any other part of human society, morals, or ideology

version 1 is less of a psychologically dramatic minefield - if he places his priorities above the species reality, he can decline when he perceives something becoming a problem to him. he's more defended, less open, less willing to change in favor of the thing he's drawn to. if it ends, it ends as a quieter tragedy, hirokawa simply distancing himself from something that seemed to work for both of them. if it becomes a happy ending, it reads a bit like gotou being shaped to suit hirokawa. if it becomes a chase to extend gotou's characterization against hirokawa's withdrawal, well, that's closer to normal pursuit romance and I don't really care for that path; either hirokawa learns to like being pursued or hirokawa breaks away entirely.

version 2 is my personal favorite. the same respect for gotou in self-abnegation means hirokawa is genuinely undefended if gotou finds something he wants in hirokawa. hirokawa would offer himself up regardless of damage, meaning that it's gotou who has to learn control and restraint to continue something that he learns to want and to prevent hirokawa from using himself up. a tragedy damages both of them deeply, while a happy and sustainable ending requires both of them to adjust and work for it

come to think of it, I *could* make version 1's pursuit arc work as a branch of "hirokawa is constantly causing his own fucking problems", but that would depend on the context of the rest of the relationship to see how hirokawa would be able to reframe gotou's pursuit in a way acceptable to whatever made him run in the first place

lovingly writing hirokawa as a politician who hides vulnerabilities on instinct because both himself and his work need him to be hidden and defended, yet struggling with the fact that attention = power.

voter sympathy, bureaucratic assistance and funding, media attention and donations all want to know who he is and how he feels. but he cannot reveal any of that. the strength of his true feelings are unacceptable and would be attacked instead of assisted.

what is a person to do when every aspect of his life tells him he should hide himself away? how can he connect to others, even those he cares for, when wariness is his default instinct, reinforced by his professional life?

Biological Observations: Subject Gotou

This feral figure looked incredible.

Hirokawa leaned back precariously, trying to estimate its height. It was surely twice as tall and large as a man, yet still sleek. The human base was no longer a limitation, only barely visible in the torso’s shape and the humanoid head.

Skin seemed to be an afterthought – long fangs emerged from sharp jaws like a terrestrial translation of abyssal teeth, while the muscular system was entirely bared. The arms bifurcated at the shoulder, back half extended into bladed tentacles while the front half stayed vaguely humanoid, limbs bending as if bones were mere suggestion. The clawed hand anatomy was barely recognizable; the thumb and two fingers were short compared to the wrist, like quadruped paws, while the latter two fingers hardly extended past the elbow at all. It was as if the Parasite’s biology had kept only the radius and its digits, letting the ulna shrink to vestigial stubs. The legs were bipedal yet digitigrade, tapering into long, slender ankles that suggested an urge to pounce – an ambush predator.

Grass rustled beneath Hirokawa’s feet as he walked behind said predator, distantly feeling the gaze following him. A long, powerful tail curled up from behind, tipped with a scythe like a scorpion’s stinger. What kind of cognition could have caused Gotou to develop a tail, and one that hung so naturally at that?

Hirokawa noticed Gotou growling, low and heavy, which only deepened the mystery rather than warn him away as it should have. Gotou had never growled before. Was it a consequence of the form or something held back in human disguise? Hirokawa crossed back to the front and noted pointed ears; four eyes still watching him, vision both binocular and panoramic; and curious dark markings framing said eyes.

Hirokawa was aware he was being unspeakably rude, treating Gotou like an unusual animal, but for once that self-awareness failed to translate to stopping himself. Here was a chimeric predatory being that had never before existed and might never exist again.

Hirokawa adores Gotou bc of his species and power, completely unguarded. Gives Gotou whatever assistance he might like without need of reciprocation. Gotou either doesn't notice or doesn't feel need to reciprocate.

human corporate au: Gotou -> Hirokawa

Gotou starts off liking Hirokawa for being a genuinely good (unshakeable) boss whose performance reports and feedback help him. Others are subtly intimidated or challenged over time by his unintentionally intimidating figure and uncanny valley behavior (neurodivergent coded lmao). Gotou gets feelings while Hirokawa stays guarded and less reciprocal in a vaguely avoidant-attachment texture.
