I need to post more about the graphic novel I' want to write I'm working on. It's still in the loose planning stage, but it's the one Kestrel is from. The working title is Beasts of Burden, it's set in an alternate, fantasy version of 1920s America in a circus sideshow. There are lots of themes I want to incorporate, but for now I'm working on researching and making sure it's generally accurate before I start adding fantasy elements. So if anyone knows good resources about antiquated carnivals and what living in them was like, especially people subjected to "freak show" conditions, send them my way!

By the way, I did find a resource for this! It's Freak Show: Presenting Human Oddities for Amusement and Profit by Robert Bogdan. It's somewhat outdated now, especially in the language (it's originally from 1988) but it's very comprehensive about how the institution developed and how people were treated. And DAMN it's fascinating.

I don't know if this is actually helpful, but just a few things I think about when drawing. Plain text below the cut!

I've gotten multiple compliments on how I draw fat necks, so I thought I'd put together a couple tips! (If you want them, idk)

Like most drawing concepts, it's about noticing how things look and move as 3D objects. Fat doesn't just make things round, it has weight and gravity to it. Think about how it sits.

Shoulders aren't even in the front and back. The spine curved a little at the base of the neck, so you'll pretty much always have more of a "bunch" on the back than the front.

But if you're tilting the head, think about how the angle of the chin and jaw will affect how the fat shifts.

Don't forget about muscles either. Don't just let the head slide all over on top just because there's more surface area there.
