Masks 5

The voice expresses how I truly feel, so can it really be considered a mask? The voice is such a personal instrument; you carry if around with you wherever you go, and to wear a mask with it, does that mean you’re always wearing a mask? I’ve been really debating over the concept of what my voice really means and how it depicts who I am as a performer and a person. While being a performer may be a mask for me, I feel as if my voice is not. My voice is purely who I am, and it always shows what I’m trying to say or how I feel.

I feel there’s a very fine line between habits and masks. I’m not sure if me being a follower in most improvs is a habit or a mask, as I am masking my improvisation skills in the hopes that nobody will think I’m being a show off or ruining an improv. If we consider this a mask, I can definitely say it’s starting to come off since working with people in ICE this year, since it’s such a judgement-free zone. I’ve started to explore the role of leader this year, which has been really refreshing for my performances. Even to step up my game as an imitator or accompanist is good, instead of falling behind as the role of follower.

When I perform, I feel as if I’m a different person. I would say that performing in general is a mask for me. When I get onstage, and really get into a piece, all my anxiety and depression is left behind and a stronger, more confident person stands in its’ place. My voice is a wonderful gift to myself, and I’m learning to let go of some preconceived notions I had prior to coming into improv lessons this year about people not liking my voice or thinking my improvs are boring to listen to. So yes, my performance side is a mask for me, but I feel as if it’s a healthy mask. I’m no longer hiding behind a distorted belief, I’m simply becoming the person I need to be to get on stage and do a good job.

It’s hard to distinguish what my masks are now, because I feel like I was more masked at the beginning of the year. I would hide behind these percussive vocal sounds, thinking they sounded complex and really added to the piece I was performing, when really I was just afraid to show off my voice.

I feel like I’ve taken that mask off since the beginning of the year though. I’m more focused on melodic improvisation and developing my ideas further than what I was originally doing.

I’ve noticed this year, especially at the beginning of the year, that I seem to improv differently when in the dark. Whether that means I gain more confidence with people not being to see me or what, I don’t really know, but I’ve been trying to incorporate what I do in the dark into my everyday improv.

The dark is a comfortable mask for me. I find that I focus better in the dark, and I’m able to put my ideas together in a more sophisticated way. It’s still a work in progress, taking what I do in the dark and putting it into real life improv. I like to think I’ve improved over the year though.

Habits 4

I noticed in ICE today that I hung back a lot in my improvisation in The Visions. I don’t know why exactly, maybe it’s because I feel the piece doesn’t need a lot of vocal textures within it since we have a narrator. I added in some breathing noises and some melodic lines with minor seconds to create a creepy atmosphere. Again, following what the group does is how I generate my ideas, I’m definitely a supporting role in this piece.

Habits 3

I think I have a healthy habit of looking at my fellow performers and following their body cues. I pick up their intentions most of the time, and I find that it leads to strong chemistry and even stronger performance. I think I’m going to continue to improvise with my eyes open, it seems to be working out for me.

Habits 2

At the beginning of the year, it was my go-to to do these breathy “Cha-Cha-Chas”. As of late though, I’ve been making more of a habit to do melodic improvisations, and even try and throw in some rhythmic variation in there. My choices in my improvisations have been stronger decisions I think, leading to stronger improvisations. I think I’m going to try and incorporate some of the Cha Cha Cha’s into my future improves, just to see if I can make something interesting out of it.

Habits 1

It’s been a long-time habit in my improv life that I have been a follower. MY idea generation works best when I’m working with others, especially so with this one girl in my ICE ensemble. I like supporting ideas more than I like being a leader with my ideas. Lately though, I have been pushing my boundaries and seeking opportunities in my improvs to take a leadership role.

Focus and Determination 2

While running the vocal improvisation group Audax, I am determined to stretch my vocal improvisation skills to create new a wacky pieces for us. We’ve explored savage noises, duos and trios, thematic improvs and improvisations off of different mediums such as paintings.

Our group is running a workshop on December 11th in Sarnia, so we’re pretty pumped about that. Getting ready for that has been a little stressful and time consuming though.

Still struggling with the lead sheet assignment. Really don’t want to do it.

Focus and Determination 1

As we come into November, I can feel my focus towards school gradually slipping, so I’m working in reigning that in. My improvisations this week have been okay, but I find I’m having a hard time developing my ideas. Probably just part of the stress of November. My lead sheet assignment is going dreadfully. I freaking hate jazz. Ok, I don’t hate it, but it’s not what I want to be spending my time on in my improvisation lessons. I’m doing Autumn Leaves and listened to some recordings, but I’m still struggling to find my focus for this assignment.

I really like this improvisation due to the movement I had throughout the piece. I was generating new interesting ideas along the way, and really focusing on my transitions throughout the improvisation.

Barriers and Obstacles 3

This was my least favourite improv recorded these past two weeks. I focused mainly on dynamics through this improvisation. While I feel I did a good job executing the dynamics, my creative ideas were very stagnant in this piece. I could have done a better job creating melodic ideas or some sort of rhythmic ideas to give the piece some colour.
