Well I give you credit for at least trying to be empathetic and put yourself in other shoes. It is surely an improvement from that good old boy sham Christianity of the south that basically is flag, football and guns. However, I still do not agree. You know, you Christians always make assumptions about us. I have been in a relationship for twenty years. We are basically both celibate these days, not due to religious reasons, but rather because we are In a certain stage of life. I always kind of thought Hugh Hefner looked ridiculous. I miss the America of my youth when presidential candidates of both the left and right would actually try to swing to the middle after Labor Day to get the most votes rather than each side trying to appeal to the extremes. Imagine that a time when being a moderate was not a dirty word. It was a time when both conservatives and liberals could fly the flag without all the partisan rancor of today. No, it was no perfect world, but I do miss the more optimistic spirit around then. After World War II, Europe was in shatters, exhausted from a conflict that brought out the worst in people, of ethnic and nationalist conflict, of competing ideologies of Communism and Fascism. American society seemed different to many of the war torn inhabitants with its upbeat big band swing music, Hollywood movies of glamour and fun that projected a different new type of world where material prosperity was not just the daily life a small aristocratic and upper class. When America was mentioned images of the impressive Manhattan skyline, big cadillacs, a new modern almost futuristic Los Angeles, quirky drive up burger joints with girls in roller skates, Elvis and that new catchy rock music, suburban ranch developments with sliding glass doors and outside patios and television sets in nearly every house came to mind. It had an appeal of hipness, freshness and of a life where it was not one of struggle and fear, but a life of fun, backyard barbecues and outings at Palisades Park, the beach or Disneyland. A desire to forge a new society especially with the election of a young charismatic John Kennedy and his stylish wife was the image the United States presented to the world. He pushed to create a new frontier society free of racial discrimination, poverty and where we aimed to see the good of what the world could be rather than the bad. A space program that inspired awe and wonder was initiated. That is why I am so sad these days. That quirky, hip, cool United States is gone. People no longer see the United States that way at all anymore. Instead we have become a sick society of both the left and the right trying to make quick cheap talking points with no desire to work together for the mutual benefit of the country. We had a Trump presidency that appealed to the most base tribal instincts and where mockery and derision were not something to be ashamed of but rather to be celebrated. I do hope the cool, quirky hip United States can return one day where being a common sense moderate while maybe boring is actually the way to be for a healthy functioning democracy.

H.R. Pufnstuf - "Moonwalk"

A slightly different post than my usual.  I post as a snapshot of culture at a certain point in time.  Kiddie shows were quite a bit different then.  HR Pufnstuff premiered in the fall of 69.  The star of Oliver, Jack Wild, was given a contract of a million dollars to do the first season of the show.  It may have only had one.  I don’t think it needs to be said that was considered an unimaginable sum to be in a kiddie show then. He plays a kid in the show, but is already seventeen here.   I suppose Michael Jackson is not the originator of the moon walk.

By the late 1960’s a situation occurred in the United States that the nation had never really come across before and for that matter perhaps the world had not ever come across. A large nation had reached a level of affluence for a great many of its citizens whereby all mental energy no longer needed to be devoted to the primal needs of food, shelter and safety. This had previously been such a luxury that only the elites of society could afford. This freedom to contemplate bigger matters relating to one’s significance against the backdrop of the universe and the cosmos can lead to a dark place though, a very dark place. This is the story of Ned Merrill in the 1968 released movie The Swimmer. Ned’s carefully created alpha image of himself that he was fond to project turned out to be a most laughable sham and the truth was a bit too hard to take.

The fall of Saigon The early 60′s were a time of such optimism.  We were idealistic and dreamed of some new World Tomorrow.  The Vietnam War, this totally insane engagement that in the end was all for nothing.  It really killed the optimism and introduced a division in society that we never really got over.

America’s first reality show.

The Louds opened their lives to America in 1973.  It was to be a show about a “typical” American family  navigating their daily lives in the midst of the sexual revolution, divorce, and other new and disruptive influences that American society grappled with in the early nineteen seventies.  Among other things we witnessed was Mrs. Loud asking for a divorce on camera and a very frank discussion of their son Lance Loud’s homosexuality and drug addiction problems.  This was quite groundbreaking for its time.  Here we have a clip of Lance Loud discussing the show with Dick Cavett.  Lance is quite the character.
