“Thank you for your concern.” She mumbled softly, with a small smile. “I just realised how far I am away from everyone I care about and cares about me is across the sea and i don’t know if they’re alive or dead.”

“Oh.. yeah.. that.. that kinda sucks.” He nodded, knowing what that felt like. He didn’t even know if his own family was still alive, having to live on campus for school. “And it’s not like our phones work anymore. I-I hope the people you care about are still alive. There’s always hope that they are r-right?”

“Surviving is a good day.” She explained with a soft shrug. “No, i’m not hurt, i’m just having an awful day and feeling rather shit to be honest.” She looked up at him for a moment. “Are you alright?”

“Y-yeah. I’m fine... I just.. I thought you were hurt.. so um..Yeah..” He scratched the back of his neck, feeling a bit awkward now he learnt that she wasn’t injured or anything. “Do you.. Do you want to talk about it?”

“Don’t you lie to me Parker.” Sonja stared back at him stoned faced. Her face soften immediately after, she’s worried and stressed, but most of all grateful to see his face, breathing and alive. Not a zombie, but actually living, her eyes swelled with fresh tears.  Glisten brown, a bit sweat, dirt and tears stained her cheeks now. “I know, it’s not a good feeling. But , you’re here and alive, and I’m just happy to see you again.” she cries, tugging him close, before she knew she was hugging him tight, afraid to let go at any second and she’d wake up and it all would be a dream. No, it was real and he was here.

“I’m not lying!” He coughed. Parker really wished he wasn’t lying but to be honest, he wasn’t sure what was happening to him. He only hoped that he wasn’t actually dying because he could not handle that right now, not when he finally found Sonja. Parker wrapped his arms tightly around her, feeling the same way she was. If he’d let go, there was a chance that he might lose her again and Parker just didn’t want to go through that. “God, I was so worried when I couldn’t find you when I looked back. I thought they got to you.”

“That’s true. It’d be a hell of a lot easier for me to hide from the zombies without  worrying they can smell my clothes from a mile away.” Kassie pinched the neck of her shirt and pulled it towards her nose, grimacing at the smell. She’d been wearing the same outfit for weeks now, fashion not really being her main priority at that moment in time. But it would have been nice to change into something a little less foul smelling. “I don’t think we’d have such a problem with the zombies if they had some manners, or at least asked us if we’d like to join them in their undead-ness before just biting away.”

“It’d be even easier if they just never existed. I mean. Yeah, the whole smelling us from afar is like.. what the hell, how did their sense grow to animal level.” Parker was sure everyone gave up about personal hygiene. It wasn’t like they had that much time to do laundry - not that there would even be laundry machines that still worked in the city. Besides, he was always one the move and alone, who cared? It was uncomfortable, but for now, it was managable. “Kumbaya with the zombies? Like that would ever happen.”

Felicity missed a lot about home, she missed her family, her friends, she even missed the crappy weather where it would be sunny one minute and raining the next, everything about her previous world was gone and she didn’t know if any of it still stood and she hated it. Looking up as she heard a voice, she wiped her eyes quickly. “Hello.” She said softly. “Y-yeah… just having a really, really bad day.”

“I don’t know if any day can be considered a good day these days..” He pointed out with a nervous chuckle. Zombies everywhere. Deaths. Missing people. Parker supposed that surviving another day could be considered a good day, depending on how one looked at it. “Y-you’re not hurt though, are you?” The outsider prayed that he wouldn’t have to leave her alone or kill her if she was infected.

Felicity was in something of a mood, having gathered a few weapons and a bag, she’d headed out of camp, not bothering to tell anyone she was leaving, because she figured no one actually gave a damn. She was feeling just fed up of everything, she missed home, she missed her family, she just missed having a normal life. She walked for a good amount of time, before finally sinking onto the ground and letting a ragged sigh leave her lips as several tears trickled down her cheeks.

Parker had been walking for hours, trying to find himself a place to sleep - or at least a nap. In university, he always lacked sleep because of all the allnighters he had to pull, but nothing compared to now. He wasn’t straining to stay awake by choice, it was a necessity. If he didn’t, the walkers might get him. It was only a matter of time before Parker came across a figure on the ground. “H-Hello?” He called out, not wanting to alarm the other, “Are you.... Are you okay?”

“Parker, I thought you were d-….” he seized her hand pulling her away from the horde. Parker done something she never thought she would ever see him do, Sonja would’ve been attacked if it wasn’t for him. “Parker, what’s happening with you? Why are you coughing like that?” Sonja heard him this time, heard it loud and clear. Shocked to worried, she’s squeezing his hand, studying his face. Sonja cupped his face, no time, they were moving away. Moving to safe zone, away from the walkers. “Are you sick, were you bitten? What’s happening, Parker?”

“Nothing, nothing!” He shook his head, pulling away from the touch. As he was happy to reunite with her, worrying Sonja was the last thing that Parker wanted to do. “Just have a small cough, don’t worry about it.” He looked down at their joined hands, “Enough about me. God, Sonja. I thought you died too, you know that? Scared the hell out of me when I couldn’t find you.” His grip on her hands tightening with each word, feeling that if he let go, she’d disappear again.

“I managed to get a few supplies from a Target, but the only stuff left was fresh, had to be eaten as soon as possible. All the corned beef and baked beans got looted right away,” Kassie spoke, crossing her arms over her chest. “Damn, never thought I’d be moaning about not getting a share of canned food.” She smiled at the male, grateful for his company. It wasn’t often she came across someone who shared a sense of humour about all this. As much as she hated her life since the apocalypse, she’d go crazy if she couldn’t at least laugh a little at the state of the world. “I mean, I doubt the undead would really care or can even comprehend if they’ve seen you naked, but I certainly don’t want the them shuffling in on me while i’m taking a shower,” she chuckled, the thought of a zombie in shock at seeing her naked amusing her a little too much.

“Yea but not only the food, you’d get so many clothes to change into without worrying about laundry. That and if winter comes around you can even put on a bit more and not get cold and stuff.” He scratched the back of his head as he envisioned the scenario. “But there’s also the junk food that can last for a real long time. Not that it’s healthy or anything, but like, you know, we get to eat something at least. Except gum. I heard gum makes you even more hungry.” He rambled on about the weirdest things, “The undead are just rude. They eat you without a care, they infect you without a care, and they just barge in whenever they want. Just what?”

“You’re welcome.” Jasmine said smiling softly and pulling him up. “It’s fine, not like i’m going to tell anyone. I mean who do i tell? The zombies, I mean I would tell them, but they don’t tend to listen and they’re spread stuff around.” She joked hoping he’d get it and not just look at her like she an idiot.

“Wow, if zombies were capable of listening then we would not be trying to fight for survival. We could probably be trying to find a compromise and everything and we wouldn’t have to fight, that would be the day. Not having to run and fight and everything, heh. Can you imagine zombies talking back instead of just moaning and groaning? That’s ... also.. very creepy.”

     ❝ Too close— I’d be dead right now if it wasn’t for you. ❞ Erin looked down at the walker and cringed. On the exterior, it looked no different than the usual clumsy things she encountered on a daily basis but something was off about it. ❝ I’ve never seen them move like that before… ❞

“I..I was just around, it’s no big deal.” He looked down, trying to observe it more clearer. “Really? I don’t see it. It’s just creepy as hell in general. How do you even tell?”

Sonja hands were trembling, even as she handle herself with her quick stepping, she felt overwhelmed knowing Parker was still alive. It’s a feeling she’d loved to bask in, the feeling of hope warming the young girl’s heart. “No…I..” she moved back, kicking the gravel dirt beneath her. Sonja swiped the hatchet, hard steel blade tear through another walker like deli meat. Gut, and human organs burst from it’s torso. Sonja sprayed, not as much as living human would sprayed of blood cut like that, she’s only wet with dirty rancid blood. Sonja looked back at Parker, he’s holding crossbow and arrow, walker’s moan disguised his coughing. She could sense something was up, or maybe she a little imaginative at the moment, Sonja makes a face smelling the blood on her arm and neck now. “I went back looking for you and you were gone!”

Parker really hated killing zombies even though he knew they were already dead. The feeling, the organs, everything just felt human even though they would have no hesitation killing him. He shot an arrow into the face of one before reloading his crossbow. “What?” Throwing her a quick glance before stabbing one with his knife, “Seriously? I.. I didn’t see you though!” He shouted as he finished another. “Shit, w..” He coughed again, staggering slightly in his spot, “We should r-really get out of here.” Taking her hand in his, Parker pulled them away from the horde. It was so long since he felt her warmth in his hand and he was absolutely elated if it weren’t for the situation.

“If you happen to have a log handy, that is. I’m usually pretty fast, but when I haven’t eaten for nearly a week, I tend to shuffle in a zombie-esque way.” Kassie thrust her arms limply in front of her and lolled her head to the side in a crude imitation of the undead. “Ugh, I know, zombies are the worst. But I bet you there’s someone out there who was prepared for this. The biggest zombie fan who’d stocked up ready for this day. They’re probably sat safe in a bunker laughing at us. It makes me sick.” Running a hand through her hair, Kassie was disgusted at how greasy it was. She’d always been meticulous about hygiene; showering everyday and washing her hands as often as she could. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. The undead don’t care if you’re in the middle of a bath, they’ll try and eat your brains all the same.”

“Pretty sure any branch we find along the way can easily trip them.” He took off his bag. “Um.” He mumbled as he started rummaging through his thing. “You know.. I thought I had something in here. But I guess I ran out and didn’t even know it.” Parker frowned as he started to zip his bag back up.” Right? Pretty sure the first place they tackled the first Costco or Target they found. Heard that was the best for resources on the get go. Too bad I didn’t have one near my school campus so..” He shrugged, “Can you imagine how scary or awkward it might be if we encountered one when we’re just trying to get clean?”

Jasmine had been off in her own little world when suddenly someone fell causing her to spin around and look at the person who was now lying on the floor. Standing up, she walked over to him and bent down beside him. “Are you alright?” She asked giving him a weak smile as she offered him her hand to help him up.

He groaned and would have turned over onto his back if it weren’t for his backpack. Instead, he turned slightly onto his side before noticing the outreached hand, “Thanks.” He mumbled as he took it and pulled himself up - brushing off the dirt off of his jacket. “That was.. embarrassing to say the least.”

     She bent over and tried to catch her breath with her hands on her knees for support. ❝ Yea I’m good— but are you? ❞ His cough sent chills down her spine and made the hair stand up on the back of her neck. Too many people were getting sick and she wasn’t going to take any chances.

“Yeah. I’ll.. I’m fine.” He nodded, wiping his lips with his sleeves. “That was like.. really.. really close.” He looked down at the corpse, nudging it with his foot.

It had been one hell of a few days, Jasmine was tired and in need to just get out of the compound. Gun in her holster, smoke in her mouth, she walked through the city, her eyes looking around. Taking a seat on the ground, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a picture, unfortunately as she did it ripped in two. “Shit.” She uttered pulling it out and looking at it. She tried desperately to piece it back together, a heartbroken expression on her face. That was all she had left of the past and it was ruined.

Parker had been walking around all day and if he didn’t find a place to stop, he was sure he’d pass right out. Looking around, he noticed a figure just a few feet from him. Since it was sitting there quite normally, Parker assumed it was a normal human being so he started in her direction, jogging slightly to close the distance faster. And just when he was almost near her, his clumsiness kicked in and he tripped over some debris, “Whoa! Oh sh-” He landed face first with a grunt. Looking up, he prayed that the stranger didn’t see him.

       Sonja rushed swinging blade, she caught the walker by it’s neck, temple and the back of it’s head. She pushed it off, gazing down at the male. “Parker, is that you?!” Sonja found herself saying, only as more walkers came charging their way. Sonja reacted, swinging the hatchet left and right. She would kill about two more, before gathering Parker up, ushering him away from the horror awaiting them. “Parker….Parker, whatever you do stay close to me. You have to stay close to me, okay?!“ she says, her spirit shaken, she’d never thought she’d see him again, alive and breathing?! Sonja had lost hope, and there he was, and she defending him with her dear own life.

The panicking boy looked up at his saviour and a smile slowly appeared on his face as recognition sank in. “S-Son-” Before he could even finish, Sonja was already killing more of zombies. As instructed, he scrambled to his feet and stuck close to her. Equipped with his crossbow, he pointed it at the targets. While she seemed to be handling everything just fine, Parker could let her do all the work so he’ll provide back up. His eyes couldn’t help but flicker over to Sonja every so often because he really couldn’t believe she was still alive. He had hoped she was alive but now it was true. He was elated “How are you here? Like here. I thought you left with the ot-” he suddenly started coughing harshly again. “Damnit’ He muttered under his breath. For a while, he thought he was getting better again since he wasn’t coughing as much despite feeling like shit. Now he was seeing blood again on his palm when he coughed into it. Quickly hiding it away from Sonja, Parker gripped his crossbow. “I thought.” He started again, “you left with the others.”

       “Look out!” Sonja shouted a warning from a safe distant. She turn back to retrieve a spear she grew accustom to carrying a few weeks now, it was gone. Panic rose quickly as Sonja scrambled to find it. Sonja found a small hatchet instead, and came running back out to help.

He flinched at the sudden shout and quickly turned around to see what was going out. But just when he did, it was already too late. The zombie took a grab on him and was already trying to make a meal out of Parker. With him feeling weak and sick, he barely have the energy to defend himself. “H-Help!” He tried calling out but it was followed by a harsh cough which caused his grip to weaken.
