The Floral Hall at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, UK, as recently restored, featuring that ubiquitous and uniquely horrible shade of blue that seems so beloved by our British cousins. When I finally visited London I was struck by how often it appeared on doors, ironwork, etc. Country Life has an interesting article on the revival of such spaces.

It’s a pretty shot, but does the photographer not realize that anyone getting into a tub this full of water would splash half of it onto the floor?

My sister took her first steps on a black-and-white marble floor in one of the larger apartments in this complex while our parents were visiting the occupants, my mother’s ‘aunt’ Mary Kline Pope and her husband Dr. Carl Pope. The Popes took the place to be near their son, Alfred (named after his paternal great uncle, father of Theodate Pope Riddle, ostensible client of The Hill-Stead in Farmington, CT). Cousin Alfred remained a patron of the museum well into his (long) life; a research psychiatrist at McLean and member of the Harvard Medical School faculty, he outlived his cousin, architect Philip Johnson, whose mother was a Pope, by four years. Cousin Alfred and his wife (also a doctor) lived in a smaller apartment in the same building.
I’m wintering a couple of small flowering shrubs for someone and they’ve recently decided to bloom. I’m trying to figure out what their proper name is before posting to Instagram (sorry, Tumblr!) and need a little help from Google Image Search.

Until the advent of the current administration one might have been able to state that worms know enough to riddle only the bits that don’t show.

The fender is a bit de trop. I’d have preferred one with an open center so as not to occlude the architecture.
It took a moment’s research to confirm, but this pic of Debo (that much I could tell just from looking at her), that is, the late Deborah, Dowager Countess of Devonshire, was taken after she had moved out of Chatsworth and could - literally - put her feet up in a dower house, in this case a former vicarage on the estate. She was in charge during one of the more pivotal transitional periods in the history of that great house and had she not existed it would have been necessary to invent her. R.I.P

Hamilton Palace, abandoned by the 13th Duke after WWI and hopelessly compromised by subsidence due to coal mining on the estate, was demolished circa 1919. Its story is well told (including floor plans in the end papers) in ‘Scotland’s Lost Houses’ by Ian Gow. The former State Dining Room from the older house which this Palladian pile subsumed was re-erected in Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. It is typically used as a display gallery for the museum’s collection of silver.

4,000 Houses for 4,000 Followers: No. 69:
Tyntesfield, Somerset, England.
Built in the 1830s and expanded in the 1860s, the the Gothic Revival style.
It is now run by the National Trust.
#Tyntesfield was one of the places featured in Mark Girouard’s ‘The Victorian Country House’, probably the single most influential architectural historian of his era. It could be said he dragged the Victorian period kicking and screaming into respectability.

Clandeboye House, Northern Ireland.
Built in 1801, the eccentric interiors are due to the 19th century traveller/ diplomat owner.

🌊A sea of silver and gold to reincorporate “rocailles” in my feed - 📌Gasparini Room or Charles III chamber in the Royal Palace of Madrid. This magnific room is a true masterpiece from Charles III era. It was completely designed by Mattia Gasparini, and there the King dressed in the typical court protocol. For that reason, his Majesty received private audiences in this chamber too. Each design of Gasparini had a big European “army” of masters behind: for the seating set (made between 1760-1770), Joseph Canops made the cabinetmaking, Antonio Vendetti and Giambattista Ferroni made the bronzes and Luisa Bergonzini embroidered the fabrics. The lavish walls, made with gold and silver, were not finished until 1802, 14 years after Charles III death. Meanwhile, during winters, they were covered by tapestries, and during summer by important oils of the Royal collection.
