(takuto to aito) ❛ you ever see something and are like ‘ i’m so glad i don’t even know what that means ’ ❜
( popular text posts; accepting!)
oh, how aito missed being young and clueless. it truly was a blessing to know less than he did now. less stress, less worries, less cynicism. but he knew takuto wasn’t clueless. no, no, he was much too clever to truly be naive, but he was quite good at paying attention to only what truly interested him. unfortunately for aito, he seemed to absorb everything, even if he didn’t want to.
“yeah, i wish i had that kind of moment when i learned what six-seven was against my will. i couldn’t even escape it. i didn’t even have a chance.” and now, he was stuck with that accursed knowledge forever.
(shin to aito) “it’s okay for friendships to end. people leave. but not ours though, you know too much.”
( some meme i guess; not accepting! )
“damn right i know too much — i could drag your name through the mud if i wanted to.” but, that requires effort and a tangible amount of vindictiveness that aito did not possess, so shin was pretty safe from defamation, all things considered. “i could also be that asshole who plagiarizes all of your work but covers it up by publishing first, but that just means writing more journals than i have to, so i’ll pass.” thinking to himself still, aito taps his chin, and eventually, he adds, “but you know ... the way you said that also makes it sound as though you could wipe me off the face of the earth to protect your secrets, so now i’m feeling slightly threatened.”
"that thing? what thing? i do a thing when i'm stressed?" he's saying this, but right off the bat, aito could think of at least three things he did when he was particularly stressed about his academics that shin could have noticed. was it the fact he hadn't left their room in a concerning amount of time? the amount of fidget and stress toys scattered about his desk? or the mess of papers and clothes scattered on his bed? honestly, even the amount of caffeine he's been consuming could be a reason for concern, but considering this was aito, that was probably more normal than anything else.
stirring the drink shin had gotten him with the plastic straw it came with, aito sighed before taking a much needed sip. refreshing and a new flavor his taste buds hadn't experienced for a few days now — he really did need this. "yeah, yeah, i know it's not. you're right." as usual.
"i've just been losing my mind over this for some reason. all of this feedback i got on my work, and none of it makes sense? like, i've read over all of these notes like three times already." maybe that was his first sign that he needed to step back and take a break.
There he is, Shin thinks.
It's definitely the amount of caffeine he'd been unhealthily consuming, and yes, Shin has no grounds to fault him for that - with the amount of caffeine he too drinks but still thinks that Aito needs some sleep - proper sleep - and not just sustain himself with nothing but caffeine in both coffee-cup and the energy drink forms.
Shin doesn't say much, and he's already noticed the way he hasn't left their room and he'd begun to silently worry about his roommate - not that he'd been seeing him lately; those lab experiments have been keeping him occupied, alongside his teaching assistant gig for the semester and balancing his time with the girl he's seeing. "Yeah, you do that thing when you're stressed." He's noticed this since their second year, when their courses have varied a bit more and shared classes have been less common between them.
On his way back, Shin has picked up a different drink - he'd gotten that soju bottle last week but has not yet opened it and has stayed in the fridge for nearly three weeks now because his obligations required his sound mind and he'd barely breathed too until now. He's remembered that Aito would likely not have left their dorm room still, and it's not much - but for Shin, even the smallest things are big enough.
"When's the last time you've eaten?" It's a mandatory question, Shin deems, and one that allows no room for any excuse but truth.
(shin to aito) “I need to hang out with someone I like, can we pretend to be working for an hour?”
( perfectly platonic starters; not accepting! )
“i love it when you reaffirm the fact you actually like me — it’s something i can rub in the other department members’ faces.” chuckling to himself, he starts to clear off some of the papers that were scattered about the table he had been occupying for the duration of his planning period thus far. “what are we pretending to work on this time around?” setting the stack of documents off to the side, aito decides to save his work now before he’d forget to entirely later on. “are we alphabetizing student tests again?”
(shin, with a mini megaphone) a i t o
“h a h ? sorry, i can’t hear you — gotta talk louder in my good ear.” no, don’t actually do that. he might actually go deaf if you do.
(takuto to aito) ‘ my interest is piqued. ’
( buzzfeed unsolved starters pt. 4; not accepting! )
“i can’t believe all i had to do was bribe you with three dollars.” what a little shit. he was shin’s little shit, though, so should aito really have been that surprised? “are you that poor that i can really get away with bribing you with three whole dollars?” considering how old takuto was, yeah, probably.
(takuto to aito) ❛ the human body has 7 trillion nerves and some people manage to get on every single fucking one of them ❜
( popular text posts meme pt. 3; not accepting! )
“god, you really do sound more and more like your dad each and every day.” takuto was, without a doubt, truly shin’s kid. “you know — it’s a gift to be that unbearably annoying. i mean think about it: seven trillion is a lot. you gotta be stupidly annoying to pinch all of those nerves.” now that he’s said all of that, aito supposed it was time for him to play the role of “sympathetic uncle” for takuto to vent his thoughts to. “you wanna tell your favorite uncle all about your day? i can, uh,” what did he even have around he could offer? “make tea or something if you want? for that extra comfort?”
(takuto, but probably trying so hard to be civil after some hoe decides to talk to his girl friend and he's ranting to aito about the rude girl.) “‘Bleh bleh bleh, I’m very important, do what I tell you’. Bitch.”
bitch. “whoa! whoa, whoa, hey, those are mean words. we need a good reason to use mean words. otherwise, someone’s gonna deck you in the face. trust me, i should know.” oh dear, it seems as though his time to be a proper uncle has come. “rewind for me a moment — was this rude girl mean to both you and your girl? or was she just rude to your girl? either way, you can defend your girlfriend’s honor without stooping to the other girl’s level. i know you drank a lot of respect women juice when you grew up — don’t forget that shit’s in your blood.” oops — well, shin could probably forgive him for slipping up ( like the many times he had slipped up before ... right? ).

@asocier x
This whole fiasco should never be a big deal. But Aito, his best friend since that first day at the dorms, since that first day at orientation week, has always had a knack of making things bigger than they should be. Something about a dramatic flair.
Yes, he'd been cold - always appeared cold, always spoke with a silver tongue that does not permit anyone to simply know him - this is the trait he shares with some family members after all - and Aito, for all the years they've been friends - the bestest of friends, and Shin does not have many that he knows intimately - has earned a softness he rarely permits anyone to see.
"You've been doing that thing. That thing you do when you're like, stressed." Stressed is an understatement - they're two graduate students in STEM, each with their own niche specialties and interest and still find themselves either the dumbest and fun duo anyone has ever encountered, or the smartest pair whose researches do not exactly always overlap.
"Aito. Breathe. It won't be the end of the world."
(shin to aito) “it’s not a big deal that i noticed your favorite drink. i’m just observant.”
( denying it hard; accepting! )
“not a big deal? of course it’s a big deal!” even if it really wasn’t a big deal to anyone else, aito was certainly going to make it one now. “you care about me. you looove me!” in a very platonic manner, he’s sure, but it still counts!
“my best friend ever, shin, knows and remembers my favorite drink? and he even put ice in it?” aito, drinks typically come with ice. “how could i ask for anything more?” there’s only a brief moment where he’s quiet, and before shin could interject with his own retort and commentary, aito laughs, his body language shifting from exaggeration to something a bit more in the normal range. “no, but thanks, really. i’ve been craving this! how did you know?" observant as always, that shin. what a guy!

the kumiho blood line - part 23
the lee family in historical contexts, a snapshot of various time periods.
here, the kumiho is a code. the lee family exists as mortals, where each soul of the lee family is reincarnated through each time period. the family members are inheritors of a survival code deeply rooted in ritual, metaphor and silence.
i. buyeo period
lee hyesun is an herbalist and priestess who is well-versed in ancestral grief. she sets the precedent for ritual practices in seasonal rites.
ii. goryeo-joseon period
in this time period, lee hyunjae is the only son of the lee family, whose family traces back to hanseong. he serves a scholar in the king's court, but never actively participating in the political plots of other clans. he sires twin children, and adopts a third child. his daughter, eunhee (miharu) develops a talent in a deep understanding of the law of the land, while his son eunhyuk (mikoto) develops a talent for the healing arts.
miharu's newfound role lands her in the radar of the queen, and within her family, she becomes the de factor leader of the family's third generation. through her aunt's guidance, she is the matriarch who wields silence and wears different masks to ensure the clan's survival.
iii. sengoku period
as the war is waged throughout the land, the family exiles to ezo. here, the lee family men offer service to the daimyo, to protect their kin. the lee family adopt the surname yamaguchi; their influence grows no further than the town they accidentally establish. for a while, they turn their back onto their original heritage; only preserving the family myth in rituals and scrolls that hold information more valuable than any gold or silver ever procured.
iv. post-imjin war
miharu and her family travel back to korea, entering the service of the new king. some of the other family members remain in ezo, establishing a family shrine there. as the jungs return to hanseong, miharu emerges as one of the family's mythkeepers; to the feudal lords of japan, she becomes known as the envoy's daughter.
v. regency/victorian
in 1813, this iteration of the yamaguchis hail from the far east. sailing eastward, they reach london, hoping to integrate into the european society. money, looks, and small connections allow them the influence necessary to debut into society-- julien's branch of the family traces back to maison de renarde from versailles. as they adjust to society, its matriarch lee hyesun is a widowed noblewoman. her children debut into society as rite of passage, and once embedded, her grandchildren take the spotlight.
the kumiho blood line - part 22
the lee family in historical fantasy contexts, a snapshot of various time periods.
existing as kumihos, literal shapeshifting creatures, the members of the family have learned to wield silence as shield and weapon, carry grief with grace, and hide in plain sight.
i. buyeo period
lee hyesun is one of the original fox sisters, cursed, but they descend from the heavens and integrated themselves into the world. she marries the mortal lee beomjae. she conceals her nature, though her husband does not leave her even in the revelation. the couple bears seven children-- six daughters, one son. the matriarch enforces the mythic code of survival to protect her descendants. she watches her own lover die of old age, and she watched her own children fall in love with mortals too. even in her own grief, she holds space for her children, who also mourn the loss of lovers. they were once nomads, feared and revered in whispered lore.
ii. goryeo-joseon period
in this time period, lee hyesun is witness to several dynasties rise and fall. though it is now her daughters who serve as ladies-in-waiting to princesses, queens and noble ladies alike, adapting many names to blend in. miharu's father, lee hyunjae, with the sons of the family, serve as scholars or even generals. lee hyesun's grandchildren, including the twins mikoto and miharu, are now grown adults. as they mature and finally explore the world, they eventually take on mates as well. forbidden love with mortals becomes a lesson that miharu's generation learns, a consequence of breaking the most sacred rule that forbids her kind to reveal their true nature.
during this time period, the whispered lore becomes a cautionary tale. the family exercises even more restraint, for this is the period where their original enemies, the samjokgu, have hunted their kind to death. nonetheless, they integrate into the court life with veiled cadence and ritual diplomacy.
iii. sengoku period
the family migrates to japan to avoid threat, survival reliant on shapeshifting. mikoto serves lords with his other cousins, while protecting the ladies of the family. the family also adopts japanese personas, the lee family adopting the surname yamaguchi. they settle in ezo, just before the country is sieged in civil wars.
the family travels seasonally between countries, though travel does not come with risks and challenges. when they return to hanseong, the family fights under the banner of the the joseon king. and yet, even with the service rendered, the kumihos remain hunted, forcing the lee family to return to ezo, as a special unit tracks and tries to kill them too.
iv. post-imjin war
with the hunts finally ceasing, miharu and her family enter the service of the new joseon king, and are sent as envoys to negotiate peace, reparations, and continue bridging a cultural exchange as a new era begins.
v. regency/victorian
in 1813, the yamaguchis finally set sail to the other side of the world. the yamaguchis reach london, hoping to integrate into the european society. money, looks, and small connections allow them to debut into society-- julien's branch of the family traces back to maison de renarde from versailles. as they adjust to society, its matriarch lee hyesun is a widowed noblewoman. her children debut into society as rite of passage, and once embedded, her grandchildren take the spotlight.
the kumiho legacy - part 21
the lee family and the legacy as it fits within the mortal kombat mythos. a family hidden in plain sight, hidden by its own codes of survival. a clan whose ancestry has been long forgotten.
they do not belong to any of the bigger factions, just existing in the spiritual and emotional margins of the world.
they are not kombatants. they do not fight. they do not seek violence actively. still, they are a warrior clan-- each member is trained with the way of combat, with weapons chosen from an early age. mastered along with foxfire, they fight to defend, to evade, to preserve.
foxfire is their signature ability, an elemental legacy of the fire. they do not use it to harm, unless necessary. passive. it is elegant, elusive, and emotionally charged.
the flame remembers. it carries a silence that echoes a lineage long forgotten.
they exist unclaimed by either realm: lee hyesun, the matriarch, descends from an edenian-netherrealmer line. minor. unallied. just an island of their own. her exile to earthrealm leads her to meet her later husband, further diluting the bloodline. it is a move she makes for survival-- before netherrealm has been claimed by darkness, and edenia by outworld. amongst the earthrealmers, she blends in. hiding in plain sight.
she teaches her descendants the forgotten arts - misunderstood, dismissed, underestimated-- rituals seen as folk magic. some of those around them fear it-- but the flame is tamed. hyesun's foxfire is forged by the grace of a forgotten empire, edenian, and carries the chaos from her netherrealm's origins. as the family expands, they transform the flame as keepers of forgotten magic.
the flame allows an escape, defense, soul protection. it leaves a trace, a feeling that lingers. a story. it is a quiet rebellion. those who have seen it and lived are few.
the fire knows silence. it remembers. it burns, but it does not harm unless needed.
every flame becomes a tie that binds to rite, a memory or a vow. it shields, veils. or unveils. it flickers in the silence. it hears what is left unspoken.
it reacts to emotional state-- it commands a soft yielding.
it echoes.
the kumiho legacy - part 20
the lee family and the legacy as it fits the celebrity/idol verse. a family dynasty, wielding influence from the shadows, from the background to the limelight. perhaps it is nepotism in part, but merit can be given where it is due. the camera flashes and the lights point to its cousin generation as ambassadors-- not just of brand products and campaigns, but also carrying the burden of living life in lights, and the balancing act of staying human when lenses no longer refract the image of perfection.
the lee family is a dynasty, rooted in talent and public influence. the cousin generation forms a constellation, thriving in the various spheres like law, medicine, fashion, music and athletics. they are all independent on their own, yet they are connected by blood and ambition.
miharu is a solo artist, a k-pop superstar with a global reach.
mikoto is a rising actor silver screen actor who has won hearts with versatile range-- heroic leads, romantically tortured love interests, and sometimes a villain. a runway regular.
chae is a fast-forward icon, dominating the runways she's walked and featured in magazines that usher current trends. a powerful force of her own, she quietly funds creative initiatives in the competitive world of fashion design.
julien has walked the runway along side his cousins, but has shifted to a part-time career as an entertainment lawyer. he is an expert in securing contracts.
taeyang is an actor who excels in villain roles. scandals plague him--often his nightlife activities and fleeting romances. often, misunderstood. but his comeback performances redeem him the trust and love of his fans.
the rest-- hanbyul, yoogeun, shin ryung-- they exist in the periphery-- they form a team of experts who provide support to their star cousins, in terms of health and emotions.
eun seol and haneul are former athletes, who become ambassadors for sport brands. they are the heart of the family, the ones who walked and made sports cool and fun before emerging as patrons of the arts.
and as for takuto? he is inspired by his older cousins-- his father's first cousins--as they thrive in the limelight. he begins his own craft, a creative endeavour that started as a hobby following his mother's death, but has significantly contributed to big projects, like his aunt miharu's latest single, released before her temporary hiatus.
