Taeui like a broken record has cleared it up multiple times that he does not for one bit regret choosing to stay by Ilay's side.

Also here Alain being too self-aware of iltae's relationship wondering how someone with Ilay’s past can get access to ordinary happiness and roam freely while his victims suffered, as people like them (task force unit) are "not supposed" to get salvation due to their line of work; and also discreetly implying that Taeui succeeded where others failed as he literally humanized Ilay or at least made Ilay capable of living peacefully and Taeui does not deny that and simply accepts that Ilay did/does commit terrible acts and that consequences for his actions are unavoidable, yet he still will continue to choose Ilay anyway.

Taeui says even Ilay himself knows that he’ll pay for his sins someday, but not like a legal punishment kind of way but more existential like loss or grief such as losing Taeui himself. It's very bittersweet to hear Taeuis response because he is admitting that loving Ilay means inheriting Ilay’s fate and that peace for them was never meant to last.

But what truly makes Malik understand the depth of Iltae's relationship is not Ilay's provocative words but Taeui's almost casual authority over someone as dangerous as Ilay and Ilay not resisting Taeui at all letting him take control of his actions

The morally complex relation between Ilay and Taeui where Taeui is more emotionally invested in Ilay's growth than his own, hoping that Ilay can retain his newfound humanity even if parts of him are still evil

During the runaway arc, the way this was one of the most compelling lines related to anger was described in the novel versus how it was depicted in the manghwa like in the beginning it was so evident that Taeui was more tolerant and resented Ilay’s behavior so much because of the atrocities Ilay had committed and for the trauma he endured during the whole instructor x assistance arc where Taeui consciously or not chooses to hold onto his anger; so this line in the novel feels perfectly aligned with where Taeui stands emotionally.

But as time passes 6-7 years later Taeui becomes someone who can’t bear to let conflict linger and it affects him when Ilay gets upset, even to the point that he confronts and tries to reason with him to calm him down. Taeui is no longer holding his anger and is stopped it from taking root. In Suite, Taeui recognizes Ilay’s rage, but no longer mirrors it.

The juxtaposition of these two lines on what Taeui is thinking during the end of the runaway arc captured their relationship's emotional truth so well that Taeui’s anger which was a form of survival, later becomes a form of care. 🤎🩶

Ilay's acts of service may seem extraordinary for Taeui but he probably puts a lot of meaning into doing things that Taeui just mentions in passing

Taeui is highly intelligent to analyze Malik's proposition to Richard saying he *needs* Tartens to maintain 'a close and strong relationship' with Arabs because he knows Richard's choice will be pivotal during the succession ceremony and recognizes the gravity of such a choice, and he trails off almost coming near to a conclusion that siding with Malik which is saying yes to whatever they ask for would be the most reasonable choice to clear the last part of their debt versus continuing the centuries bond between Tarten and Reigrow WITHOUT even knowing what Malik was implying which is basically taking what Reigrow owns aka Taeui from them by betraying Ilay and forcefully handing Taeui off to Rahman.

Taeui just being there and witnessing this whole interaction is foreshadowing as ultimately Richard betrays Ilay and hands over Taeui as a final form of debt payment to the Arabs which is exactly Rahman's ploy/shortcut to get to Jaeui after his escape from the annex years ago and also to keep Taeui captive for Jaeui's wellbeing based off the tip Jaeui shared with Rahman about the twins connection linked directly to his health (also Richard must have thought that trading Taeui is an add-on benefit since Taeui was getting close to Christoph).

Taeui will forever be Ilay’s only apologist. Although Ilay’s personality is feared and despised by everyone, Taeui will always be the one person who remains loyal to him—the one who will pat his back when he cries, and while Taeui doesn’t always advocate or condone Ilay’s actions or defend him at every turn, he values the relationship they have despite Ilay’s unpleasant nature. Over time, this loyalty leads Taeui to prioritize Ilay above his brother, uncle, Kyle, and everyone else, which shows just how immensely he wants Ilay in his life.
